France Becomes First European Country to Issue Digital Schengen Visas
France became the first European Union member to introduce fully digital Schengen visas for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris. Commencing on January 1, 2024, the newly launched "Olympic Consulate" system operates through the France-Visas portal, streamlining the application process for 15,000 international athletes, 9,000 journalists, and foreign delegations.
Applications for the 70,000 visas will be exclusively processed online, preventing them from being inundated among other visa requests. This groundbreaking initiative aligns with the EU's digitalization plans for Schengen visas, marking a significant shift in visa application procedures.
In an innovative approach, approved visas will not be affixed to passports. Instead, they will be seamlessly integrated into accreditation cards, a move aimed at enhancing efficiency and convenience for participants.

Indore, Bhopal, Udaipur Nominated for International Wetland City Tag
India nominated Indore, Bhopal and Udaipur for the Wetland City Accreditation (WCA) scheme under the Ramsar Convention, which helps cities gain international recognition for their efforts to protect their natural or human-made wetlands.
These are the first three Indian cities nominated for WCA based on the proposals received from state wetlands authorities in collaboration with municipal corporations.
The wetlands situated in and around these cities provide a plethora of benefits to their citizens in terms of flood regulation, livelihood opportunities, and recreational and cultural values.
REC, Bank of Baroda Sign MoU to Finance Power, Infra and Logistics Projects
In a significant development aimed at boosting India's infrastructure, state-owned REC Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bank of Baroda (BoB) to jointly finance projects in the power, infrastructure, and logistics sectors over the next three years.
The MoU was signed in presence of Vivek Kumar Dewangan, IAS, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), REC Limited and Debadatta Chand, Managing Director and CEO, Bank of Baroda along with Lalit Tyagi, Executive Director, Bank of Baroda.
Adani Ports Elevates Karan Adani to MD, Appoints Ashwani Gupta as CEO
Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) elevated its CEO Karan Adani to the role of Managing Director, a position which was held by Chairman of Adani Group Gautam Adani.
Gautam Adani was re-designated as executive chairman of APSEZ.
The company's board also approved the appointment of Ashwani Gupta, former global Chief Operating Officer at Nissan Motors, as the new Chief Executive Officer of APSEZ.
SEBI Appoints G. Ram Mohan Rao as Executive Director
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) appointed G. Ram Mohan Rao as Executive Director (ED) for a period of three years. Rao will be handling the investigation department and the internal inspection department. He has been with the markets regulator for over 25 years during which he has supervised diverse portfolios such as inspections, litigation, recovery, investor awareness, grievance redressal, etc. Prior to the appointment, Rao was the Regional Director of the Eastern Regional Office of SEBI.
Czech PM to be Chief Guest at Vibrant Gujarat Summit
The Prime Minister of Czech Republic Petr Fiala is expected to be the Guest of Honour at the 10th Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors Summit to be held from January 10-12 in Gandhinagar. Besides PM Fiala, Timor-Leste's President José Ramos-Horta, President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Mozambique's President Filipe Nyusi will also be attending. The Prime Minister will open the event on January 10 in Gandhinagar.
The Czech Republic is also a partner country in the 10th Summit.

Kerala CM Launches K-SMART App for Digital Access to Local Govt. Services
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the K-SMART application, aiming to provide digital access to services offered by local self-government bodies through a unified platform across the state.
The Chief Minister said that the government's objective is to leverage advanced technology for the improvement of various sectors in society.
With the introduction of K-SMART (Kerala Solutions for Managing Administrative Reformation and Transformation), services provided by local self-government bodies will now be available at citizens' fingertips.

Delhi University Announces Financial Support Scheme
The Delhi University's Dean Students' Welfare office announced its Financial Support Scheme (FSS) 2023-24 for students whose family annual income is less than Rs. 8 lakh.
This financial assistance scheme is for full-time bonafide students studying in any UG/ PG degree programme at a department/ institution/ centre of University of Delhi belonging to specific categories:
Students whose family income per annum is less than or equal to Rs. 4 lakh will be given a fee waiver of up to 100 per cent (actual fee or up to a maximum of Rs. 10,000).
Students whose family income per annum is between Rs. 4 and 8. lakh will be given a fee waiver of up to 50 per cent (actual fee or up to a maximum of Rs. 8,000).
The fee waiver includes all components of the fee paid at Delhi University except examination fee and hostel fee.
ERNET India Launches New Web Portal for Education Institutes
Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) Secretary S. Krishna launched Education and Research Network (ERNET) India's newly developed integrated web portal for educational institutes in the country.
Developed by utilising open-source software and emerging technologies such as AI and ML, the portal will offer domain registration, DNS and value-added services such as Website as a Service (WaaS) and Learning Management as a Service (LMaaS).
The users can select from the variety of available templates for schools, colleges, universities as per their requirement and create their own website and Learning Management System. The users can publish the website and LMS by customizing the template with a single click.

Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Appointment of Two Women as Gauhati HC Judges
The Supreme Court collegium recommended the appointment of Shamima Jahan, an advocate, and Yarenjungla Longkumer, a judicial officer, as judges of the Gauhati High Court.
The collegium comprising Chief Justice D. Y. Chandrachud, and Justices Sanjiv Khanna and B. R. Gavai passed a resolution which revealed that the names were suggested on the strength of the High Court Collegium's May 2023 recommendations that underwent meticulous scrutiny and evaluation last October 2023.
Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Appointment of One Judicial Officer as Calcutta HC Judge
The Supreme Court Collegium recommended the name of Smt. Chaitali Chatterjee (Das), Judicial Officer, for appointment as Judge of the High Court at Calcutta.
The Collegium comprising Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice B. R. Gavai approved the recommendation made by the High Court collegium in September 2023.
The Collegium noted that the Chief Minister and the Governor for the State of West Bengal had not conveyed their views on the above recommendation. The Department of Justice forwarded the above recommendation by invoking para 14 of the Memorandum of Procedure which provides that if the comments of the constitutional authorities in the State are not received within the prescribed time-frame, it should be presumed by the Minister of Law and Justice that the Governor and the Chief Minister have nothing to add to the proposal and proceed accordingly.
The Collegium consulted three judges of the Supreme Court who were conversant with the affairs of the Calcutta High Court. All the three consultee Judges have unanimously and emphatically opined that the candidate is suitable for being appointed as a High Court Judge.
