Nobel Peace Laureate Muhammad Yunus Convicted in Bangladesh Labour Law Case

  • The Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus was convicted of violating Bangladesh's labour laws in a trial decried by his supporters as politically motivated.
  • Yunus, credited with lifting millions out of poverty with his microfinance bank, Grameen, earned the enmity of Sheikh Hasina, the long-time Prime Minister, who has accused him of sucking blood from poor people.
  • A labour court in the capital Dhaka convicted and sentenced them to "six months' simple imprisonment.

Denmark's Crown Prince Frederik

  • After an impressive 52-year reign, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, recognised as Europe's longest-serving monarch, declared her intention to abdicate on January 14. The throne will be inherited by her eldest son, Crown Prince Frederik.

Chad Opposition Leader Masra is PM of Transitional Government

  • Chadian opposition leader Succes Masra who returned to the central African country following a deal with the ruling junta, was appointed as Prime Minister of the transitional government.
  • His appointment could be seen as a move by the junta to appease the opposition after a constitutional referendum in which most opposition political parties either called for a boycott or a no vote.
  • Masra, a staunch opponent of the junta which seized power in April 2021, fled the country after dozens were killed and hundreds injured as security forces cracked down on demonstrations in the capital N'Djamena on October 20, 2022.

Yes Bank Faces Penalty of Rs. 3 crore by Tamil Nadu GST Department

  • Yes Bank, the private sector lender, received a tax receipt worth Rs. 3 crore from the Tamil Nadu Goods and Services Tax (GST) department on December 31, 2023, on account of various GST issues.
  • The bank had received two separate tax notices from the Bihar GST department for Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 1,38,584, respectively, in December .
  • Yes Bank is an Indian bank headquartered in Mumbai, India and was founded by Rana Kapoor and Ashok Kapoor in 2004.

Australian Batter David Warner Announces Retirement from ODIs

  • David Warner announced his retirement from ODI cricket. The veteran put forth his decision two days before playing his farewell Test match against Pakistan to be played at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
  • The left-handed opener compiled 6,932 runs in 161 ODIs at an average of 45.30, at a strike rate of 97.26. Warner has also registered 22 centuries and 33 fifties in the format, with the best score of 179.
  • Warner retires as the sixth-highest run-scorer in Australian ODI history, having amassed 6,932 runs from his 161 matches. His 22 centuries are the second most by any Australian ODI player, behind only Ricky Ponting, who made 29 in 105 more innings than Warner played.

Indian Teenager Anahat Singh Bags Girls' Under-19 2023 Scottish Junior Open title at Edinburgh

  • Talented Indian teenager Anahat Singh produced a dominant performance, bagging the girls' under-19 title at the 2023 Scottish Junior Open squash held in Edinburgh. Anahat claimed a 11-6, 11-1, 11-5 victory over home favourite Robyn McAlpine in the final. It capped off a spectacular year for Delhi's Anahat, who recorded the under-19 and senior National championship double and won the mixed doubles bronze along with Abhay Singh both at the Asian Games and in the inaugural Asian Mixed Doubles Championships.

Australian Olympic Cyclist Melissa Hoskins Dies

  • Melissa Hoskins, a revered Australian Olympic track cyclist and former world champion, tragically passed away at the age of 32 in a devastating incident.
  • Known for her remarkable achievements in track cycling, Hoskins secured the world champion title and set a global record in 2015 as an integral part of Australia's women's team pursuit quartet. Her dedication shone through in her appearances at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games, narrowly missing a medal in the 2012 London Games by a mere 0.181 seconds.

Sagar Parikrama (Phase X) Event from January 1 to 6 2024

  • Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Parshottam Rupala along with Minister of State L. Murugan is participating in the Sagar Parikrama (Phase X) organised from January 1 to 6, 2024 at various locations of Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry.
  • Union Ministers will distribute Kisan Credit Card (KCC) to beneficiaries like fishermen, aqua farmers and other stakeholders during the events to progressive fishermen, particularly coastal fishermen and fish farmers, young fisheries entrepreneurs etc.
  • The Sagar Parikrama Yatra features the interactions of Minister with fishermen, fish farmers and other relevant stakeholders. Campaigns on KCC and other activities are also being conducted across the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry. State fisheries officials, fishermen representatives, fish-farmers, entrepreneurs, fishermen cooperative society leaders, professionals, scientists, and other stakeholders from across the nation will accompany the events.

Government of India Constitutes Sixteenth Finance Commission with Arvind Panagariya as its Chairman

  • The government appointed former Niti Aayog vice chairman and Columbia University professor Arvind Panagariya as the chairman of the Sixteenth Finance Commission, which will recommend the tax revenue sharing formula between the Centre and the States for the five-year period beginning April 2026.
  • The Chairman and other members of the Commission shall hold office from the date on which they respectively assume office up to the date of the submission of report or October 31, 2025, whichever is earlier.
  • October 2025 is the deadline set for the Commission to submit its recommendations, so that they can be incorporated in the Budget exercise for 2026-27. The Finance Commission usually takes about two years to consult stakeholders in the States and Centre and arrive at their conclusions.
  • The Finance Commissions are commissions periodically constituted by the President of India under Article 280 of the Indian Constitution to define the financial relations between the central government of India and the individual state governments. The First Commission was established in 1951.

India, Pakistan Exchange List of N- Installations

  • India and Pakistan exchanged the list of nuclear installations between the two countries. This was the 33rd consecutive exchange of lists of nuclear installations between the two countries, the first one having taken place on January 1, 1992.
  • The lists of nuclear facilities were simultaneously exchanged through diplomatic channels in New Delhi and Islamabad in line with the provisions of the Agreement on the Prohibition of Attack against Nuclear Installations and Facilities.
  • The agreement was signed on December 31, 1988 and entered into force on January 27, 1991. It stipulates that India and Pakistan should inform each other about the nuclear installations and facilities to be covered under the pact on the first of January of every calendar year.

Vice Admiral V. Srinivas Takes over as Chief of Southern Naval Command

  • Vice Admiral V. Srinivas took charge as the 30th Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOCINC) of the Southern Naval Command in a ceremonial parade at the naval base.
  • He succeeded Vice Admiral M. A. Hampiholi, who retired after a distinguished four-decade career in the Indian Navy.
  • A graduate of Defence Services Staff college and Naval War college, Vice Admiral Srinivas is an expert in nuclear safety and has operational experience in Operations Pawan, Vijay, and Parakram. His past roles include Flag Officer Submarines, Flag Officer Commanding Maharashtra Naval Area, and Inspector General Nuclear Safety. Recognising his contributions, he was awarded the Nau Sena Medal (NM) in 2009 and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) in 2021.

World Introvert Day

  • World Introvert Day is a special day celebrated annually on January 2 to recognise and appreciate the unique personalities and strengths of introverts.
  • World Introvert Day was created by German psychologist Felicitas Heyne who frequently wrote on introversion. He felt introverts deserved a quiet day after the marathon of holiday and celebrations that started with Thanksgiving/Christmas and ended on the New Year's Day. The day could help them recharge and prepare themselves for the days ahead.

Andhra Launches Second Phase of Jagananna Aarogya Suraksha

  • The Andhra Pradesh government launched the second phase of the Jagananna Aarogya Suraksha across the State. As a part of the programme, 13,954 health camps will be conducted in six months, beginning in the villages on January 2 and in urban areas the next day.
  • Ward and village volunteers will visit every household twice and explain to the people the details of the health camps.
  • They will make the first visit 15 days before the camp date to inform about the venue and scheduled date, while the second visit will be three days before the camp as a reminder.
  • As many as 12,423 health camps were organised during the first phase of the programme and 1,64,982 patients were referred to hospitals empanelled under Dr. YSR Aarogyasri scheme.
  • The Department of Health, Medical and Family Welfare has been working to achieve 'Aarogya Andhra Pradesh' and as part of its efforts, the first phase of the Jagananna Aarogya Suraksha was completed in 50 days, benefiting more than 60 lakh people.

CBSE Introduces Psychological Guidance Ahead of Board Exams 2024

  • In an effort to support students and parents ahead of the upcoming Board exams, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced the commencement of psychological counselling services from January 1, 2024. This initiative aims to provide comprehensive assistance aligned with the examination schedule, which has already been unveiled for practical and theory papers scheduled between January 1 and January 15, respectively.
  • CBSE is probably the only Board in the country which has been providing psychological counselling to students and parents on such a wide scale continuously for 26 years in innovative ways.

IIT Roorkee, IIT Bhilai Sign MoU to Promote Tribal Research, Preserve Indian Knowledge Systems

  • The Indian Institutes of Technology in Roorkee and Bhilai – IIT Roorkee and IIT Bhilai, signed an MoU to strengthen the academic and research collaboration between the two institutions. This strategic partnership aims to preserve and promote Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) and seeks to contribute to socio-economic development in tribal areas, emphasising research on traditional medicinal plants, tribal culture studies, agricultural practices in tribal regions, and financial literacy among tribal populations.
  • The MoU was signed at IIT Bhilai by the heads of both institutions – Professor K K Pant, Director IIT Roorkee and Professor Rajiv Prakash, Director IIT Bhilai.

Karnataka Sculptor Yogiraj Arun's Ram Lalla to be Installed in Ayodhya

  • With the country counting down to the grand 'Pran-Pratishtha' ceremony of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya, the idol carved by sculptor Yogiraj Arun from Karnataka was finalised for the consecration at the Ram Temple on January 22.
  • Designs by three sculptors were under consideration by the Trust. Among the figures being considered for the grand installation inside the sanctum sanctorum of the Ram Temple was a 51-inch-tall idol, depicting a five-year-old 'Ram Lalla'.

Senior Advocate A. Sudarshan Reddy Appointed Advocate General of Telangana

  • The Governor of the State of Telangana appointed Senior Advocate A. Sudarshan Reddy as the Advocate General of the State.
  • Sudarshan Reddy had previously also held the post in 2011 and continued to hold it till 2014 during Kiran Kumar Reddy's tenure as the Chief Minister. He also served as the AG for AP and Telangana during the President's Rule in 2014, during the demarcation of the State.
