HDFC Bank Board Approves Re-appointment of Atanu Chakraborty as Chairman

  • Private lender HDFC Bank's board recommended the re-appointment of Atanu Chakraborty as the part-time non-executive chairman and independent director, subject to further approval.
  • The bank further added that the matter is with the Reserve Bank of India for a second term of three years from May 5, 2024, to May 4, 2027 approval.
  • Chakraborty, a 1985 batch IAS officer of Gujarat cadre, retired as Secretary of Department of Economic Affairs in April 2020.
  • HDFC Bank (also known as HDFC) is an Indian banking and financial services company headquartered in Mumbai.
  • The bank was incorporated in August 1994 after its erstwhile parent HDFC received an 'in principle' approval from the RBI to set up a bank in the private sector, as part of its liberalisation of the Indian banking industry, and commenced operations in January 1995.

CEBR Forecasts India as Third-Largest Economy by 2032, Global Economic Leader by Century's End

  • India is set to become the world's third-largest economy by 2032, and will eventually surpass China and the United States to become the 'world's largest economic superpower' by the end of this century, as per a report released by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR).
  • India will sustain "robust economic growth", averaging 6.5 per cent from 2024 to 2028, CEBR stated in its 'World Economic League Table 2024' report. This will result in the country surpassing Germany to become the fourth-largest economy in 2027, and overtaking Japan to become the third-largest economy by 2032.

Françoise Meyers World's First Woman to be Worth over $100 Billion

  • Francoise Bettencourt Meyers, the heir of the L'Oréal empire, made history by becoming the world's first woman to amass a staggering $100 billion fortune. She is also the richest woman in the world.
  • According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, her wealth crossed $100 billion, as she maintains her position as the world's 12th richest individual, ahead of notable figures like Mukesh Ambani, Amancio Ortega, and Gautam Adani.

NASA Sends Spacecraft to Study 'God of Chaos' Asteroid

  • NASA relaunched a mission to study the 'God of Chaos' asteroid as it begins to near Earth's orbit. The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft that returned from deep space after collecting samples from the space rock Bennu has been renamed the OSIRIS-APEX (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security – Apophis Explorer).
  • It has now been launched to study the asteroid Apophis' extremely close flyby of Earth in 2029. The asteroid also known as 'God of Chaos' is expected to fly by Earth on April 13, 2029, from about only 20,000 miles away.
  • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is an independent agency of the U.S. federal government responsible for the civil space program, aeronautics research, and space research. Established in 1958, NASA succeeded the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) to give the U.S. space development effort a distinctly civilian orientation, emphasising peaceful applications in space science.

Indian Wrestler Pooja Dhanda Suspended for One Year Due to Whereabouts Failures

  • Indian wrestler Pooja Dhanda, who won the bronze medal at the 2018 World Championships in the 57kg, was handed a one-year ban by India's National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) due to three whereabouts failures.
  • Pooja Dhanda was charged with three whereabouts failures and banned for one year by the disciplinary panel in December 2023. Her suspension started in June 2023.
  • NADA, formed in 2005, is India's central anti-doping agency and authorised to conduct 'in competition' and 'out of competition' testing of Indian athletes. It operates under the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) regulations. It is headquartered in New Delhi.
  • The agency is formed by the Union Government under National anti doping Act 2022 and includes scientists and representatives from the Indian Olympic Association.

P. V. Sindhu Makes it into Forbes List of Highest Paid Women Athletes in 2023

  • Badminton star P. V. Sindhu made it into the list of 2023's highest paid women athletes by Forbes where she finished at the 16th spot alongside gymnast Simone Biles with her $7.1 million earnings.
  • The Forbes list is headed by Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek who is valued at $23.9 million. She won the French Open and ended the year as the No.1 ranked player in the world.

Ayodhya Railway Station Gets New Name

  • Ayodhya Railway Station that is scheduled inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was renamed to 'Ayodhya Dham Junction'.
  • The redeveloped Ayodhya railway station is a state-of-the-art facility having modern 'airport-like' amenities, while its facade is inspired by traditional temple architecture.
  • The redevelopment work, which started a couple of years ago, has been executed by RITES (Rail India Technical and Economic Service) Limited, a central public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Railways.

Telangana Govt. Rolls Out Praja Palana Program

  • The Telangana government rolled out its Praja Palana programme to identify eligible beneficiaries before the implementation of its poll promise of six guarantees.
  • The initiative involves the collection of applications from individuals, enabling the government to identify potential beneficiaries of the six guarantees promised by the Congress during the run-up to the assembly elections.
  • The Praja Palana programme rolled out by Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu will cover all villages and wards across the state.

Nina Singh Becomes 1st Woman to Head CISF

  • The Centre appointed Nina Singh as the Director General of CISF, making her the first woman to head this elite force.
  • Nina Singh was the first woman IPS officer allocated to the Rajasthan cadre where she served in many important assignments across the state. She also worked as Joint Director in the CBI during 2013-18 where she supervised many high-profile cases having national and international ramifications.
  • She has been working in the CISF since 2021, first as ADG and then as Special DG, and DG in-charge since August 31, 2023. A native of Bihar, she has studied at the Patna Women's College, JNU and Harvard University.

Indian Navy Unveils New Shivaji-inspired Designs of Epaulettes for Top Officers

  • The Indian Navy unveiled the new design of epaulettes that officers will wear, drawing inspiration from Rajmudra of Chhatrapati Shivaji. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the introduction of the new design during the Navy Day address at Sindhudurg in Maharashtra. The new design was released for the ranks of Admiral, Vice Admiral and Rear Admiral, the top three positions in the naval forces.
  • The reflection of the Maratha ruler's maritime legacy in new epaulettes, a shoulder piece that signals an officer's rank, is an attempt to leave the mentality of slavery, which the current design feature — Nelson's Ring, a colonial legacy.

Anish Dayal Singh is New CRPF Chief

  • Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) chief Anish Dayal Singh was appointed as the Director General of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
  • Singh, a 1988-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Manipur cadre, was holding the additional charge of the CRPF following the retirement of S. L. Thaosen in November 2023.
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved Singh's appointment as DG, CRPF up to December 31, 2024, i.e. the date of his superannuation.

Actor and DMDK Founder-leader Vijayakanth Dies

  • DMDK founder-leader and popular yesteryear Tamil actor Vijayakanth died in Chennai. He was 71 years old.
  • Widely known as 'Captain', Vijayakanth's life is marked by a successful career in the Tamil film industry.
  • He featured in 154 movies before venturing into politics. He founded Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazgam in 2005.
  • In 2011, DMDK fought the elections in alliance with the AIADMK and contested 41 constituencies, winning 26.
  • The Captain's party scripted history, winning more seats than the DMK in 2011 and emerged as the principal opposition party that year.
  • Vijayakanth served as the leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly from 2011-2016.

IIT-Guwahati Collaborates with Assam Govt to Promote STEM Studies

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati collaborated with the Government of Assam's flagship Arohan scheme to motivate meritorious students to pursue STEM subjects in their higher education.
  • To date, the Institute has successfully hosted 3311 students (2009 girls and 1302 boys) and few hundred mentee teachers, inspiring them to explore the vast opportunities and interests in STEM education.
  • Under the Arohan scheme, IIT Guwahati has hosted meritorious students (Mentees) along with their Guide teachers/Officers in a total of 12 batches. During their visit to IIT Guwahati, these students had the opportunity to engage with institute faculty members, interact with students, and explore institutional facilities.
  • Arohan, conceived as a Mentor-Mentee program for secondary class students in Government schools, is an initiative championed by the visionary Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Gujarat to Introduce India's First Submarine Tourism in Dwarka

  • The Gujarat government would introduce India's first submarine tourism. It joined hands with the Mazgaon Dock Limited (MDL) in a project to explore the marine life surrounding Bet Dwarka, a small island off the coast of Dwarka city, which has a mythological significance in the Hindu religion.
  • The project is on the lines of the Titanic submersible expedition, which made news after one of its vessels tragically imploded in the Atlantic Ocean.
  • The tourism facility is likely to be operationalised before Diwali 2024. It will enable tourists to dive 100 metres below the sea in a submarine to experience the marine life around the island.

SC Collegium Recommends Names for Chief Justices of Five High Courts

  • The Supreme Court Collegium recommended the names of Chief Justices for the High Courts of Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana, Gauhati, Jharkhand and Allahabad.
  • The three-member Collegium presided by Chief Justice of India D. Y. Chandrachud noted that the office of the CJ of Rajasthan HC had fallen vacant following elevation of its former CJ Augustine George Masih to the SC, and recommended that Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava, the senior-most judge from the High Court of Chhattisgarh, be appointed in his place. Justice Srivastava is currently functioning as the Acting CJ of Rajasthan HC.
