  • The special commission that approved it said the design was an ode to Minnesota's motto, Star of the North.
  • It added that the light blue represented the state's waters.

Guinea-Bissau President Sacks Prime minister, Names Replacement

  • Guinea-Bissau's President Umaro Sissoco Embalo dismissed Geraldo Martins as Prime Minister just a week after his reappointment and appointed former Prime Minister Rui Duarte de Barros in his place.
  • De Barros previously worked as the West African country's Minister of Economy and Finance and as a commissioner at the West African Economic and Monetary Union, before serving as Prime Minister in a transitional government between 2012 and 2014.

Ford Motor Cancels Deal to Sell its Tamil Nadu Plant to JSW Group

  • Ford Motor will not sell its Tamil Nadu plant, the automaker's sole remaining factory in India, after finalising a deal with the Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group.
  • Ford India's main manufacturing plant located in Maraimalai Nagar, spread across 350 acres and shut since July 2022, has a capacity to produce 150,000 cars in two shifts, and 200,000 cars in three shifts. It has an annual capacity of almost 340,000 engines.

Maharashtra Bags Women's and AAI Wins Men's Title Events in Guwahati

  • In team events of the 75th Inter-State-Inter-Zonal Badminton Championships 2023, Maharashtra bagged the women's and Airport Authority of India (AAI) won the men's title events in Guwahati.
  • The prestigious national championship was held in Assam after four years. AAI team appeared in both men's and women's team finals but won the title in the men's category defeating Karnataka 3-0.
  • In the women's team final, Maharashtra dominated AAI 3-0 and won.

Soumya Sarkar Breaks Sachin Tendulkar's 14-year-old Record

  • Bangladesh opener Soumya Sarkar hit his career-best ODI score of 169 off just 151 deliveries and helped Bangladesh post 291 all out in 49.5 overs, breaking legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar's 14-year-old record during the second ODI match against New Zealand in Nelson.
  • He broke the record for the highest individual score in New Zealand by a sub-continent batsman. The master blaster Sachin Tendulkar scored a record 163 runs in Christchurch 2009 against the Kiwis in their backyard.

Government of India and ADB Sign 37 Billion Japanese Yen Loan for Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System Corridor

  • The Government of India and Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed agreement for a 37 billion Japanese Yen ($250 million) loan that will continue financing the construction of the 82-kilometre Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor.
  • The signatories to the loan agreement were Ms. Juhi Mukherjee, Joint Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, for the Government of India, and Mr. Hoe Yun Jeong, Deputy Country Director, and Officer-in-Charge of the India Resident Mission, for ADB.
  • Earlier, ADB had approved a $1,049 million Multi-tranche Financing Facility (MFF) for the project in 2020 to support construction of RRTS, the first of three priority rail corridors planned under the NCR Regional Plan 2021, to connect Delhi to other cities in adjoining states. The RRTS will have multi-modal hubs to ensure smooth interchange with other transport modes. The first tranche of the ADB loan amounted to $500 million with another $500 million co-financed by AIIB.

Former Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar is Speaker of MP Assembly

  • Senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar was unanimously elected as the speaker of the Madhya Pradesh legislative Assembly.
  • Chief Minister Mohan Yadav moved a proposal for the election of 66-year-old Tomar as the Speaker which was seconded by Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar.
  • Former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also moved a proposal for the election of Tomar as the Speaker which was seconded by former Union Minister Prahlad Patel.
  • Five more proposals, including by opposition Congress MLAs Ajay Singh, Jaivardhan Singh and Rajendra Kumar Singh, were also moved in favour of Tomar.
  • After the voice vote, Pro-tem Speaker Gopal Bhargava declared Tomar as elected unanimously to the Speaker's post.

  • Cochin Shipyard Limited signed a Rs. 488.25 crore contract with the Ministry of Defence for repair and maintenance of equipment and systems onboard naval vessels.
  • Cochin Shipyard, renowned as a premier shipyard in India for both commercial and defence shipbuilding and repairs, continues to play a pivotal role in bolstering the country's maritime capabilities.
  • The yard, with its pan-India presence is focusing on expanding its footprint and developing a larger ecosystem for shipbuilding and repairs across the nation.

Naval Exercise MILAN- 2024 to be Held at Visakhapatnam

  • The 12th edition of the Multilateral Naval Exercise - 2024 (MILAN) would be held at Visakhapatnam from February 19 to 27, 2024 and likely witness the largest-ever participation by over 50 countries and nearly 20 ships from friendly nations.
  • The flagship event, MILAN is a biennial multilateral naval exercise, which was incepted by the Indian Navy in 1995. Originally conceived in consonance with India's 'Look East Policy, MILAN expanded in ensuing years with the Govt of India's 'Act East policy' and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) initiative, to include participation from other Friendly Foreign Countries (FFCs).

World Basketball Day

  • World Basketball Day is an annual celebration held on December 21, commemorating the invention of basketball by Dr. James Naismith in 1891.
  • Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian physical education educator, invented basketball on December 21, 1891, at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA. The game was created to keep students active during the winter months. Recognising the global influence of the sport, on August 25, 2023, the United Nations adopted resolution A/RES/77/324 proclaiming December 21 as World Basketball Day.

Bhutan Top Honour for Former IAS officer Dr. Khetrapal

  • Retired Punjab cadre IAS officer of 1975 batch and WHO South-East Asia regional director Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh was awarded Bhutan's prestigious National Order of Merit Gold Medal for her distinguished services to the country.
  • Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk honoured Dr. Khetrapal at Bhutan's 116th National Day celebration.
  • Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh, the first woman regional director of WHO South-East Asia Region, played a pivotal role in supporting transformative healthcare leadership in Bhutan from 2014 to 2024. Her tenure witnessed remarkable strides, including Bhutan becoming one of the first countries to eliminate measles and rubella ahead of schedule.

Mohammed Shami to Receive Prestigious Arjuna Award; Satwik-Chirag to Get Khel Ratna for 2023

  • Veteran pacer and India's ODI World Cup hero Mohammed Shami will receive the Arjuna Award for 2023 after a stellar year for the nation as the Sports Ministry confirmed the list. The prestigious award came as another feather in the hat for the Indian pacer who was the highest wicket-taker in the ODI World Cup with 24 wickets. Badminton duo, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are also on the award list as they will receive the Khel Ratna award for their contribution to the sport in 2023. Shami will join 25 other athletes as a recipient of the prestigious Arjuna Award.

Lok Sabha Passes Telecommunications Bill, 2023

  • The Lok Sabha passed the Telecommunications Bill, 2023 to replace the Indian Telegraph Act of 1885, the Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act of 1933 and the Telegraph Wires (Unlawful Possession) Act of 1950.
  • The bill aims to amend and consolidate the law relating to development, expansion and operation of telecommunication services and telecommunication networks, assignment of spectrum and connected matters.
  • The proposed Bill aims to overhaul the existing licensing regime for telecom networks, transitioning from the current system to an authorisation framework. Under the present arrangement, the telecom department issues over 100 types of licenses, registrations and permissions. The Bill aims to streamline this process by consolidating many of these into a single authorisation mechanism.
  • Moreover, the Bill empowers the government to reclaim spectrum that remains unused. It also introduces provisions for sharing, trading, and leasing of spectrum. Entities will now have the option to surrender unused spectrum although they won't receive compensation from the government for the same.

WHO Officially Recognises Noma as a Neglected Tropical Disease

  • In a pivotal move towards addressing one of the world's most under recognised health challenges, the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced the inclusion of 'noma' (cancrum oris or gangrenous stomatitis) in its official list of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). This decision, which was recommended by the 17th meeting of the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group for Neglected Tropical Diseases (STAG-NTD), underscored WHO's commitment to expanding health services to the world's most vulnerable populations.
  • Noma, a severe gangrenous disease of the mouth and face, primarily affects malnourished young children (between the ages of 2 and 6 years) in regions of extreme poverty. It starts as an inflammation of the gums, which, if not treated early, spreads quickly to destroy facial tissues and bones. It frequently leads to death, with survivors suffering severe disfigurement.

IIT Madras Launches 7 Free Online Courses in Sports Science, No JEE Score Required

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) announced the launch of seven new online courses on Sports Science. The courses can be taken online free of cost, as per the IIT.
