Bihar Business Summit 2023: Massive Investment Inflows of Rs. 50,530 Crore through MoUs

  • Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth Rs. 50,530 crore were successfully inked with approximately 300 companies, reflecting a resounding success for Bihar. These agreements span diverse sectors, underlining the state's appeal to investors.
  • Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, a key participant in the summit, took a significant step towards bolstering Bihar's economic landscape. He unveiled the Bihar Logistics Policy 2023, with a vision to establish world-class infrastructure for both industrial and social advancement.
  • The Adani Group, a major player in the investment surge, has declared an additional investment of Rs. 8,700 crore in Bihar. The commitment extends across sectors such as cement manufacturing, logistics, and agro-industry. Pranav Adani, Director of Adani Enterprises, highlighted the group's existing investment of Rs. 850 crore in the state.
  • Several prominent companies entered into significant agreements, including Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (Rs. 7,386.15 crore), Patel Agri Industries Private Limited (Rs. 5,230 crore), Holtech International Inc (Rs. 2,200 crore), and Indo European Heart Hospitals and Research Institute Private Limited (Rs. 2,000 crore).

BCCI Decides to Retire M. S. Dhoni's Iconic No.7 Jersey

  • In a move echoing the tribute to cricket legends, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to retire the iconic No.7 jersey worn by former captain MS Dhoni. This decision follows the precedent set by Sachin Tendulkar's No.10, retired in 2017. Going forward, no other Indian cricketer will sport the No.7 jersey.

Telangana to be Divided into Three Zones to Decentralise Development

  • Telangana Government announced its resolve to decentralise the development in the State. It has accordingly planned to divide the State into three zones with Hyderabad as the centre. One zone will be the city within the outer ring road, second will be the area between the Outer Ring Road (ORR) and the proposed Regional Ring Road (RRR) and the third zone would be covering the areas outside the regional ring road, Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan said.

PM Modi Inaugurate Surat Diamond Bourse

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the newly-built Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB) building, the world's largest office complex, in Gujarat.
  • Built at a cost of approximately Rs. 3,500 crore, the building spans 67 lakh square feet of floor space and has the capacity to house nearly 4,500 diamond trading offices.
  • In August this year (2023), the building, which is part of the Diamond Research and Mercantile (DREAM) City, was recognised by the Guinness World Records as the largest office building in the world.
  • Apart from offices, the Diamond Bourse campus has facilities such as safe deposit vaults, conference halls, multipurpose halls, restaurants, banks, customs clearance house, convention centre, exhibition centres, training centres, entertainment areas, restaurants, and a club along with security plans.

Sultan of Oman's Maiden Visit to India

  • Oman Sultan Haitham bin Tarik's maiden three-day visit to India signalled a strong support to India from a West Asian power amid Arab-Israeli tensions over Gaza.
  • The Sultan arrived in India at the invitation of President Droupadi Murmu.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Murmu received the Sultan at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. The sultan then inspected a Guard of Honour by the combined defence services.
  • India and Oman share a long-standing friendship rooted in historical, cultural, and economic ties. Furthermore, people-to-people contact between India and Oman can be traced back 5,000 years.
  • The diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1955 and were upgraded to a strategic partnership in 2008.

Indian Navy & IIT Kanpur Join Forces to Drive Innovation through Research Partnership

  • Indian Navy and Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Naval Headquarters, New Delhi, symbolising their commitment to promote technology development, innovative solutions and joint R&D. Rear Admiral K. Srinivas, Asst Chief of Materiel (Dockyard & Refits) and Professor Subramaniam Ganesh, Officiating Director IIT Kanpur concluded this MoU.
  • The Indian Navy and IIT Kanpur share common interest in academic exchange of scientific research activities in the field of Engineering related to defence technologies. The MoU would serve as a broader framework and enable both sides to enhance capacity building, provide solutions to field level issues and enhance training effectiveness through exchange of faculty/ guest lectures.

India, Philippines Hold Drill in South China Sea

  • Signalling their intent in the Indo-Pacific, the Indian Navy and the Philippines Navy carried out a maritime partnership exercise in the South China Sea.
  • INS Kadmatt on a long-range operation deployment to the 'West Philippine Sea' undertook the exercise with BRP Ramon Alcaraz of Philippine Navy.
  • Manoeuvres, replenishment at sea approaches, flying operations by the Indian Navy helicopter and communication drills were undertaken during the exercise.

Kuwait Emir Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah Passes Away

  • Emir of Kuwait, Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, passed away at the age of 86.
  • Nawaf was sworn in as Emir following the 2020 death of his predecessor, the late Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah.

OnePlus Announces Scholarship for IIT Madras Students

  • Global technology brand OnePlus announced a scholarship fund in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras). The financial scholarship program 'Never Settle' is open to new and existing students at the IIT Madras in the undergraduate (BTech) programme.
  • Students will be evaluated as per the merit-cum-means eligibility criteria by IIT Madras, which will manage the scholarship review process. The Never Settle Scholarship programme, as per OnePlus, is committed to easing the financial burden of education by offering substantial scholarships to deserving students.

Central Tribal University to Be Set Up in Telangana

  • The Parliament passed the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2023 bill to establish a central tribal university in Telangana. The bill was passed by Rajya Sabha through a voice vote after it was cleared by Lok Sabha. The university will be built at a cost of ₹900 crore. The university is expected to be set up in Mulugu and is named after tribal goddesses Sammakka and Sarakka.
  • As per the state and objects of the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2023, the Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University aims to fulfil regional aspirations by enhancing access and quality of higher education in Telangana. The new university is expected to promote higher education and research along with tribal art, culture, customs and technological advancements for the tribal population of India.
