Next BRICS Summit in Russia will Establish a Fair World Order
President Vladimir Putin criticised the West for demanding a so-called 'rules-based world order' and said that the next BRICS summit under Russia's presidency in October 2024 will be dedicated to establishing a 'fair world order'.
Putin said the next BRICS summit in the Russian city of Kazan, under Russia's chairmanship, will influence the current situation to move in the right direction.
He said the summit will demonstrate that there are enough forces in this world, powerful countries who want to live not by those unwritten rules, but rather by the rules enshrined in fundamental, cornerstone documents, which include the United Nations Charter.
Maldives Govt. Scraps Hydrographic Survey Agreement with India
As India-Maldives relations experience further strain following the demand for troop withdrawal, the Maldivian government led by President Mohamed Muizzu, chose to terminate the hydrographic survey agreement with India. The announcement came merely a month after President Muizzu requested the withdrawal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives, aligning with his 'India Out' campaign platform.
The hydrographic survey agreement, inked on June 8, 2019, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the Maldives, permitted India to conduct a comprehensive study of the island nation's territorial waters, encompassing reefs, lagoons, coastlines, ocean currents, and tide levels.
The third Joint Hydrographic survey by the Indian Navy and the MNDF was carried out by Indian Naval Ship Investigator (INS Investigator) from January 19 to February 26, 2023. The ship surveyed Northern Maldives covering Ihavandhippolhu and Thiladhanmatee atolls and Gallandhu Kandu.
India's Uma Sekhar Triumphs over US, Russia, China Candidates in UNIDROIT Election
India's Uma Sekhar was elected to the governing council of the Rome-based International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) in an election that saw 32 contestants in the fray including from the US, China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and France.
The UNIDROIT is an independent intergovernmental organisation dealing with various legal issues including studying needs and methods for modernising commercial and private laws.
Uma Sekhar was elected to the Governing Council of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) with an impressive 45 votes out of 59 votes in the first round at the elections held in Rome.
India will be a member of the body for the period 2024-28.
Nations at COP28 Reach Landmark 'UAE Consensus' for Net Zero by 2050
In Dubai, nations reached for a landmark agreement, the 'UAE Consensus' that calls for a transition away from fossil fuels to achieve net zero by 2050. The 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) had a historic close, marking a turning point in global efforts to combat climate change. 198 participating Parties outlined an ambitious climate agenda aimed at keeping the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C within reach.
As COP28 concluded, the focus now shifts to ensuring the agreements are implemented and followed through at COP29 and COP30. The COP28 Presidency signed an agreement with Brazil, the host of COP30, to deepen collaboration and increase climate ambitions, working with Azerbaijan, the hosts of COP29, to ensure ambitious updated climate plans for action in this critical decade.
RBI Grants Authorization to Bandhan Bank for Pension Disbursement to Retired Railway Employees
Bandhan Bank received authorisation from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to facilitate pension disbursement through e-Pension Payment Orders (e-PPOs) on behalf of the Ministry of Railways. The bank is in the process of integrating with the Ministry of Railways to streamline and operationalise the pension disbursement process.
Bandhan Bank's newfound authorisation empowers it to disburse pensions to retired employees of the Ministry of Railways, encompassing individuals who have concluded their service with the organisation. This mandate extends the bank's reach to approximately 50,000 average Indian Railways retirees annually, covering all offices, including 17 zonal railways and 8 production units of Indian Railways.

Parama Sen Appointed Part-time Member of PFRDA Board
The Centre appointed Parama Sen, Additional Secretary, Department of Expenditure in the Finance Ministry, as a part-time member in Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA).
Sen, a 1994 batch Indian Audit and Accounts Services (IAAS) officer, replaced Anne George Mathew, Additional Secretary in Finance Ministry, who demitted office.
PFRDA has a chairman besides three whole-time members and three part-time members. The post of Member (Law), which fell vacant in May 2023, remains to be filled.
Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) is the regulatory body for overall supervision and regulation of pensions in India. It operates under the jurisdiction of Ministry of Finance in the Government of India. It was established in 2003 based on the recommendations of the Indian government OASIS report and was part of the establishment of the Indian National Pension Scheme.

India Women Create History with 410 Runs on Day 1 of Only Test against England
India women cricket team created history by scoring 410 runs on day 1 of the only Test against England at DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. This is the second highest score ever in a day in a women's Test behind England's 431/4 against New Zealand in 1935.
This is also the third time ever that 400-plus runs have been scored in a single day of a women's Test with the third occasion, apart from aforementioned two, being day 4 of Australia vs England Test in 2022. While the 1935 Test saw 475 runs being scored by England and New Zealand combined, 449 runs were scored between Australia and England in December 2022.

NITI Aayog and IFPRI Sign SoI to Strengthen Policy Frameworks for Agricultural Transformation and Rural Development
The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog) and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) signed a Statement of Intent (SoI), aiming to fortify policy and program frameworks contributing to India's developmental objectives.
The five-year SoI grants IFPRI a broad mandate to support NITI's Agriculture Vertical in crucial areas. The SoI activities include developing and tracking Rural Transformation Indicators, supporting the design and evaluation of flagship programs, providing policy analytical tools, and generating evidence on India's agri-food trade in regional and global contexts. To ensure sustainable and inclusive agricultural and rural transformation, NITI Aayog has been actively guiding India's development programs through periodic monitoring and evaluation with a specific focus on agriculture.
IFPRI will provide policy analytics and support to NITI Aayog in mutually identified areas within the broader realm of food systems transformation, initially focusing on agriculture, rural development, trade, and climate change policies in India.
India, ADB Sign $200 Million Loan Agreement for Uttarakhand Power System Project
The Centre signed an agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for availing a $200 million loan from the latter to improve the quality, efficiency, and reliability of power supply in the state of Uttarakhand.
The signatories to the loan agreement for the Uttarakhand Climate Resilient Power System Development Project were Juhi Mukherjee, Joint Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs in the Finance Ministry and Hoe Yun Jeong, Deputy Country Director and Officer-in-Charge of ADB's India Resident Mission, for ADB.
The ADB funding for the project will strengthen power system infrastructure and help Uttarakhand in achieving its goal of providing 24x7 power to its residents.
MDL Submits Bid for Project to Build 3 New Kalvari Class Submarines
State-owned Mazagon Dockyards Limited submitted its response to the Defence Ministry tender for building three new Kalvari class submarines for the Indian Navy.
The MDL has already constructed six Scorpene submarines, five of which are already in service. The sixth one is likely to be commissioned in early 2024. The Indian Navy's fifth stealth Scorpene class submarine, INS Vagir, was commissioned into the Indian Navy in January 2023.
The Kalvari class submarines are extremely potent platforms, they have advanced stealth features and are also equipped with both long-range guided torpedoes as well as anti-ship missiles.

The Karnataka Legislative assembly passed the Karnataka Prohibition of Violence against Advocates Bill, 2023.
The Bill was introduced by Karnataka's Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H. K. Patil.
The bill provides that any person who commits an offense against a lawyer shall face imprisonment for a term ranging from six months to three years, or a fine of Rs. 1 lakh, or both.
It further provides that whenever an advocate is arrested by the Police in respect of a cognizable offence, the Police shall, within 24 hours of the arrest, notify the President or Secretary of the advocates' association of which the arrested advocate is a member.
The Bill states that every offense punishable under it shall be tried by a court not below the Court of Judicial Magistrate of First Class.

Madhya Pradesh Government to Set up PM College of Excellence in all Districts of the State
Madhya Pradesh government will set up PM College of Excellence in all districts of the state. The decision to this effect was taken at the first Cabinet meeting chaired by new Chief Minister Mohan Yadav in Bhopal.
In Madhya Pradesh, the government will upgrade one college in every district out of total 570 government colleges as "PM College of Excellence". More than Rs. 460 crore will be spent on the development of these colleges.
Apart from this, degree and mark sheets of students in all government and private universities will be uploaded in DigiLocker.

The inaugural Judgement and Decision-Making (JDM) India conference, a historic milestone in decision science, was held at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. The event was co-convened by Dr. Arjun Ramakrishnan, a neuroscientist and decision researcher from IIT Kanpur, and convened by Dr. Sumitava Mukherjee, a decision researcher, and behavioural scientist from IIT Delhi.
The JDM field delved into the science of Judgement and Decision-Making, covering fundamental cognitive and neural processes influencing decisions. Discussions spanned applied areas pivotal in various spheres of life, business, and society, encompassing diverse topics such as neuroeconomics, behavioural economics, rationality, perception of risk, artificial intelligence, and algorithmic decisions.
