Nitin Gadkari Launches World's First Ethanol-Run Toyota Innova Car

  • In a groundbreaking move towards a more sustainable automotive industry, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari introduced the world to a remarkable innovation: a 100% ethanol-fuelled variant of Toyota's Innova HyCross car. The newly unveiled car stands as the world's premier BS-VI (Stage-II) electrified flex-fuel vehicle, demonstrating the union of cutting-edge technology and a commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
  • The unveiling of the 100% ethanol-fueled Innova HyCross underscores the urgency of transitioning to alternative and greener fuels in the pursuit of sustainable development. Nitin Gadkari acknowledged the importance of this transition, noting that while significant strides have been made in sustainability, more actions are required to combat pollution and protect the environment.

Delhi World's most Polluted City

  • Delhi emerged as the world's most polluted city in a new study which has also found that its residents are on track to lose 11.9 years of life if the current levels of pollution persist.
  • The Air Quality Life Index (AQLI) released by the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago also showed that all of India's 1.3 billion people live in areas where the annual average particulate pollution level exceeds the 5 µg/m3 limit set by World Health Organisation (WHO).
  • It also found that 67.4 per cent of the country's population lives in areas that exceed the country's own national air quality standard of 40 µg/m3.

Axis Bank Launches Paid Saving a/c with No Charges for Services

  • Axis Bank, a private sector lender, launched its 'Infinity Savings Account', offering special features for its customers, including no domestic transaction charges in exchange for monthly fees. The move aims to appeal to those who frequently adopt subscription-based models.
  • This innovative savings account provides Axis Bank customers with exclusive privileges such as a waived average monthly balance (AMB) requirement, complimentary debit cards, and a waiver of all domestic charges against a small monthly recurring fee of Rs. 150 or an annual fee of Rs. 1,650.

JLL Appointed as Global Real Estate Facilities Manager by Rolls-Royce

  • Rolls-Royce appointed real estate group JLL to run global facilities management operations across the company's real estate portfolio in China, Germany, India, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States.
  • According to a statement by JLL, as part of the long-term contract starting February 2024, JLL will operate as Rolls-Royce's strategic global facilities management partner across 15 million square feet of manufacturing, warehouse and office space at 44 sites in six countries.

ISRO-developed Device for Fishers' Safety Successfully Tested

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved a significant milestone by successfully testing its innovative device named 'Nabhmitra'. This device, developed at ISRO's Space Applications Centre in Ahmedabad, aims to enhance the safety of fishermen during their sea expeditions. The successful testing took place at Neendakara, where the device was installed on a fishing vessel, and its capabilities were assessed in the presence of both scientists and officials from the Fisheries department.
  • Nabhmitra operates on the basis of advanced satellite communication technology, allowing seamless two-way messaging between fishing boats and maritime authorities stationed at sea. This breakthrough technology greatly improves the communication channels and safety measures available to fishermen during their voyages.

Chandrayaan-3 rover Confirms the Presence of Sulphur in Lunar Surface

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said that the Pragyan rover's Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscope confirmed the presence of sulphur in the lunar surface near the south pole, through the first-ever in-situ measurements. Pragyan is a lunar rover that forms part of Chandrayaan-3, the lunar mission developed by ISRO.

  • The ruling comes six days after Rubiales was accused of becoming a national embarrassment in front of a global audience at the final in Sydney, Australia — overshadowing the enormous accomplishment of Spain women's first World Cup title.

NITI Aayog, UNDP Join Hands to Fast-track Sustainable Development Goals

  • Central think tank NITI Aayog and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed a memorandum of understanding to formalise a cooperative framework to fast-track India's pursuit to achieve its sustainable development goals (SDGs).
  • The memorandum of understanding will focus on the two organisations' cooperation on a range of areas, including SDG localisation, data-driven monitoring, Aspirational Districts and Blocks, among others.

India, New Zealand Sign MoU to Boost Cooperation in Civil Aviation

  • India and New Zealand signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to boost cooperation in civil aviation. This will cover the scheduling of new routes, codeshare services, traffic rights, and capacity entitlement. The MoU was signed by Civil Aviation Secretary, Rajiv Bansal and the New Zealand High Commissioner David Pine in New Delhi.
  • On the occasion, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Minister for Trade and Export Growth Damien O'Connor of New Zealand were also present.
  • According to the MoU, the designated airlines of New Zealand may operate any number of services with any type of aircraft, with third and fourth freedom traffic rights to and from six points in India, namely New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. India Lodges Strong Protest with China over New Map

  • India lodged a strong protest with China over the publication of a new map that was released by the Chinese government on August 28, showing all of Arunachal Pradesh, Aksai Chin, and other parts of Indian territory within its borders, that External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar called absurd claims. The map, that has in the past claimed Indian territories as well, was published just days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and discussed resolving the boundary situation.

GSL and Kenya Shipyard Ltd Sign MoU for Collaboration in Shipbuilding

  • With its efforts to enhance security of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), especially on the eastern coast of Africa, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) and Kenya Shipyards Limited (KSL) to strengthen maritime security cooperation between the two nations.
  • The agreement focuses on capacity building and collaboration in ship design and construction. The MoU was formalized in the presence of India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Defence Aden Bare Duale during their talks in New Delhi. This signing reflects the shared commitment of both nations to deepen their collaboration in maritime security.

World Sanskrit Day

  • World Sanskrit Day, also referred to as International Sanskrit Day, Sanskrit Diwas and Vishwa Samskrita Dinam is observed on the day of Shravana Poornima in the Hindu calendar, which is also marked as Raksha Bandhan, which coincides with the moon. This year (2023) Sanskrit Diwas is celebrated on August 31. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness and promote Sanskrit, one of India's oldest languages.   • Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, inaugurated the ambitious Bapu Pariksha Parisar in the Kumhrar locality of Patna, characterising a significant landmark in the field of education. The five-storey building, sprawling over a substantial six acres, is now deemed the largest examination centre of the state and indeed the whole of India.

IIT Madras Bags Third Rank in Norway's Njord Challenge 2023

  • Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) student team Aritra secured the third place globally and also won the Sustainability Award in Njord Challenge 2023, a global competition hosted by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway. They also won a cash prize of 10,000 NOK (Norwegian Krone).
  • Njord - Autonomous Ship Challenge is a unique, international student competition in which participants are tasked with designing and building an autonomous ship. Teams are invited to bring their vessels to Trondheim's fjord, where they compete in a series of challenges and events.

J. P. Nadda Releases Outlook Group's Coffee Table Book 'Sikhs and Modi'

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Nadda said that the teachings of Sikh Gurus contributed towards the unity of the society, patriotism, and dedication towards religion.
  • He added that all the Prime Ministers have delivered their speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort on Independence Day, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the first Prime Minister of the country, who organized the main event at the Red Fort, to celebrate the 400th birth anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur Singh. He also highlighted that the Narendra Modi government granted Foreign Contribution Regulation Act registration to Sri Harmandir Sahib, and now Sikhs from across the world can make contributions to the temple. He said, Besides, the Modi government also gave massive relief to Gurudwaras by waiving GST on langar items.
