Srettha Thavisin Elected As Thailand Prime Minister

  • Thai property tycoon Srettha Thavisin was elected as the new Prime Minister of Thailand following a decisive win in a parliamentary vote. Thavisin's victory in the parliamentary vote, with the support of two-thirds of the assembly, ended weeks of political uncertainty that followed an election held 100 days ago.
  • Srettha Thavisin's election as Prime Minister ushers in a new era of coalition politics. He faces the challenging task of holding together a potentially fragile coalition government, which includes parties affiliated with the royalist military. The military, notorious for orchestrating coups in 2006 and 2014 that toppled Pheu Thai (a major Thai political party) governments, holds a significant stake in this coalition. Thavisin's ability to navigate the intricacies of this coalition will play a pivotal role in determining the stability and direction of Thailand's government.

BRICS Paves Way for Expansion, Agrees on Framework to Add New Member Nations

  • Leaders of the BRICS bloc, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, reached an agreement to establish mechanisms for evaluating potential new member nations, revealed South Africa's Foreign Minister.
  • This significant accord on expansion sets the stage for numerous interested countries to present their case for joining BRICS, an alliance dedicated to championing the interests of the developing 'Global South.'
  • The expansion of BRICS was a central focus at the summit held in Johannesburg, South Africa.
  • The initial meeting of leaders from BRIC nations, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, and China, took place in St. Petersburg, Russia, during the G8 Outreach Summit in July 2006. Following this, in September 2006, the group was formally established as BRIC during the inaugural BRIC Foreign Ministers' Meeting, which convened alongside the UN General Assembly's General Debate in New York City.
  • After a series of high-level gatherings, the first-ever BRIC summit was convened in Yekaterinburg, Russia, on June 16, 2009.
  • Subsequently, the BRIC group underwent a transformation and was renamed as BRICS, with the inclusion of South Africa as a full member on December 24, 2010.

Russia Hosts Army 2023, the 9th International Military-Technical Forum

  • India, China, and Iran had pavilions at the Army 2023, the 9th International Military-Technical Forum hosted by Russia. The Indian pavilion featured stalls from the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and three Defense Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs).
  • This pavilion was inaugurated by India's Ambassador to Russia, Pavan Kapoor, and garnered attention from Russian government officials, including Defense Minister General Sergei Shoigu. The DPSUs present were Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL). BrahMos Corporation, a joint venture between India and Russia, was also part of the expo.

LIC Acquires Stake in Jio Financial Services

  • The Life Insurance Corporation of India acquired 6.660 per cent stake in Jio Financial Services owing to the de-merger action by Reliance Industries.
  • Jio Financial de-merged from Reliance Industries in July, as a part of which shareholders of RIL were allotted one share of Jio Financial for every share held.
  • LIC said that the cost of acquisition is equivalent to 4.68 per cent of the pre de-merged cost of Reliance Industries.

Honeywell Launches New AGL Manufacturing Facility in Gurugram

  • US conglomerate Honeywell, launched a new Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) manufacturing facility in Gurugram, India, in line with its 'Make in India' programme and commitment to domestic manufacturing and technological advancement.
  • AGL, a product engineered and manufactured completely in India, plays a crucial role in airport operations and is subject to comprehensive safety and compliance regulations by global aviation standards and regulatory bodies.
  • The complete engineering and technology that caters to the needs of airports was incubated and developed by the Honeywell Technology Solutions team in India.

Snap Inc Appointsd Pulkit Trivedi as India's Managing Director

  • Snap Inc, the parent company of instant messaging platform Snapchat, appointed Pulkit Trivedi as India's Managing Director, while revamping the organisational structure with a focus on growing the user community in the country.
  • Under a new operational structure, the growth, market development, partnerships, content and creator ecosystem teams of Snap in India will now report directly to Trivedi. This new, highly localised structure will further help in building unique experiences for the company's growing user community.
  • Trivedi was working at Google for the past five years as the director of Google Pay- India business team.

China Launches Gaofen Earth-observation Satellite

  • China sent a new Earth observation satellite into space from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China.
  • The satellite, Gaofen-12 04, was launched by a Long March-4C carrier rocket and entered the planned orbit successfully.
  • It will be used in a variety of fields, including land surveys, urban planning, road network design, crop yield estimation and disaster relief.
  • The launch marked the 484th flight mission of the Long March series carrier rockets.

India Scripts History with Chandrayaan-3 Lunar Touchdown

  • India scripted history by becoming the first country in the world to reach the uncharted territory of the Moon. The Indian Space Research Organisation's spacecraft Chandrayaan-3 touched down on the lunar South Pole, making India the first country to land on the Moon's unexplored surface. With this monumental moment, India also became the fourth country to master the technology of soft-landing on the Moon after the United States, China and the erstwhile Soviet Union.
  • One of the key functionaries in the Chandrayaan-3 mission is ISRO chief S. Somanath. Somnath guided the Chandrayaan-3 team, which had P .Veeramuthuvel as Project Director, K. Kalpana as Associate Project Director, and M. Srikanth as Mission Operations Director.
  • The lunar South Pole is of particular interest as the permanently shadowed polar craters may contain water. The frozen water in the rocks could be transformed by future explorers into air and rocket fuel.
  • The lander is named Vikram, after the father of India's space program, Vikram Sarabhai. The rover is named Pragyan, which means 'wisdom' in Sanskrit.

  • In historic first, Indian powerlifters, Honey Dabas and Rahul Jograjiya, bagged gold and silver medals to open the World Para-Powerlifting Championships 2023 held in held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
  • Dabbas clinched the nation's first-ever gold with lifts of 132 kg and then 135 kg, displaying amazing grit, determination, and strength.
  • Meanwhile, Jograjiya followed his compatriot to secure the silver medal with a final lift of 132 kg in the fiercely-contested men's 72 kg junior weight category.

Panel Formed For 'Restructuring and Redefining' Role of DRDO

  • The Ministry of Defence decided to revamp India's premier defence research agency, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), known more for its delayed projects, cost overruns than the advances made in actual technology other than the missile programme.
  • As per reports, the ministry set up a nine-member committee under the chairmanship of K. Vijay Raghavan, the former principal scientific advisor to the government.
  • The panel members include former Army deputy chief Lt. Gen. Subrata Saha (retd.), the prime mover behind Army's reach out to the Indian defence industry.
  • Other members are Vice-Admiral S. N. Ghormade (retd.), former chief of Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) Air Marshal B. R. Krishna (retd.), J. D. Patil of Larsen and Toubro, and Mahindra Group's S. P. Shukla who is also the president of SIDM, an industry grouping of Indian defence companies, Sujan R. Chinoy, head of the MP-IDSA think tank and Manindra Agarwal of IIT-Kanpur, S. Unnikrishnan Nair, Distinguished Scientist, ISRO, and Defence Ministry's Financial Advisor Rasika Chaube are part of the panel.
  • Starting with only 10 laboratories in 1958, DRDO has grown into a giant organisation with a network of over 50 laboratories and establishments spread across the country. It, however, has not been able to produce a single technologically contemporary or futuristic platform or capability for the Indian armed forces on its own.

Indian Coast Guard Signs MoU with Philippine Coast Guard to Enhance Maritime Cooperation

  • Indian Coastal Guard (ICG) and Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on enhanced maritime cooperation.
  • The MoU was signed by DG Rakesh Pal, Director General Indian Coast Guard and CG Admiral Artemio M. Abu, Commandant, PCG at the Coast Guard Headquarters, New Delhi.
  • Both sides held their first bilateral meeting on a range of maritime issues.
  • The MoU inked seeks to enhance the professional linkage between the two Coast Guards in the domain of Maritime Law Enforcement (MLE), Maritime Search & Rescue (M-SAR) and Marine Pollution Response (MPR).
  • The implementation of this MoU will enhance bilateral maritime cooperation between the two nations for ensuring safe, secure and clean seas in the region.

Legendary Statistical Scientist C. R. Rao Passes Away

  • On a day India marked its presence on the Moon, it lost one of its brightest mathematical stars. C. Radhakrishna Rao, one of India's greatest mathematicians and statisticians, died in the US at the age of 102.
  • C. R. Rao, who completed his Masters from Andhra University, won the International Prize in Statistics (2023), which is considered equivalent to the Nobel Prize.
  • He was awarded India's highest honours the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan in 1969 and 2001, respectively.
  • Rao was also a member of several government committees for the development of national statistical systems, statistical education and research in India. He served as chairman of the Committee on Statistics (1962-69), chairman of the Demographic and Communication for Population Control (1968-69), chairman of the Committee on Mathematics, Atomic Energy Commission, AEC (1969-78), member of the Committee on Science and Technology, COST (1969-71).

UP Cabinet Approves 18 'Atal Residential' Schools

  • The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet approved developing 18 Atal Residential Schools along the lines of the centre-run Navodaya Vidyalayas at a cost of Rs. 1,250 crore.
  • The 18 Atal Residential Schools will come up in all 18 divisions of Uttar Pradesh.
  • The capacity of these schools will be 1,000 students, including 500 girls and as many boys. It will have classes from six to twelve. Children whose studies were affected by Covid-19 pandemic can also get admission to these schools.
