Canara Bank Introduces UPI Interoperable Digital Rupee Mobile App
Canara Bank launched the UPI Interoperable Digital Rupee mobile application as a part of the Reserve Bank of India's Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) pilot project.
It is the first bank in both the public and commercial sectors to offer this feature via its CBDC mobile app called the Canara Digital Rupee app.
With the introduction of this feature, customers can scan merchant UPI QR codes using the Canara Digital Rupee app and pay through digital currency.
Moreover, the feature is aimed at empowering merchants to accept digital currency payments using their existing UPI QR codes in addition to UPI-based payments without the requirement of a separate onboarding process for CBDC.
Oriana Power Bags Contract for 20-MW Solar Project
Oriana Power Ltd won a contract worth Rs. 138 crore from Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) to set up a 20MW AC ground-mounted solar photovoltaic power plant at Dugdha washery area, Dhanbad, Jharkhand.
The EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) phase of this project is slated for completion within 12 months.
The project will produce clean energy capable of powering over 10,000 homes. It is also estimated to mitigate an impressive 26,000 tonne of CO2 emissions annually, contributing substantially to the fight against climate change.

A three-day workshop on Localisation of Sustainable Development Goals (LSDGs) in panchayats was held in Srinagar.
The Union Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Giriraj Singh virtually inaugurated the three-day workshop in the presence of Lt Governor Manoj Sinha.
The main objective of the workshop was to exhibit the best strategies, approaches, innovative models in the context of capacity building and training; best practices; monitoring framework, incentivisation and reflection of themes of SDGs into Gram Panchayat Development Plan (GPDP).
'Meri Panchayat Mobile app' developed by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj was released during the inaugural session of the National Workshop.

Axis Bank's Neelkanth Mishra is Part-time Chairperson of UIDAI
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the nodal body in charge of issuing Aadhaar numbers, appointed Neelkanth Mishra as its part-time chairperson. Mishra is the Chief Economist and Head of Global Research at Axis Bank Ltd.
Prior to Axis Bank, Mishra worked for two decades at Zurich-based Credit Suisse, where his roles included co-head of APAC Strategy, India Equity Strategy Head, and Head of Research, India. He specialises in metals and mining, Indian pharmaceuticals, Taiwan IC design, semiconductor foundries, and Asian tech strategy research.
The UIDAI board consists of a chairperson, two part-time members, and the CEO, who also serves as the member-secretary.

The 11-day Malabar naval exercise featuring the navies of India, Australia, Japan and the US concluded. The 27th edition of the exercise, which took place on the East Coast of Australia, witnessed complex and high intensity drills in air, surface and undersea domains.
Warships, submarines and aircraft from the Indian Navy, Royal Australian Navy (RAN), Japan Maritime Self Defence Force and the US Navy participated in the exercise.
Iran Builds Advanced Mohajer Drone with Enhanced Range
Iran has built an advanced homemade drone named Mohajer-10 with an enhanced flight range and duration as well as a greater payload.
The drone has an operational range of 2,000 km (1,240 miles) and can fly for up to 24 hours. Its payload can reach 300 kg (661 pounds), double the capacity of the Mohajer-6 drone.
U.S. officials have accused Iran of providing Mohajer-6 drones, among other unmanned aerial vehicles, to Russia in its war against Ukraine. Tehran denies this.

It was against this background that the day is observed on August 23. It was first commemorated in Haiti and a number of countries in 1998.

Boards Exams Twice a Year, Best Score to be Retained
Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan announced that the new curriculum framework (NCF) as per National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is ready and textbooks for the same will be developed for the 2024 academic session.
As per the NCF, the board exams will be conducted twice a year and students will be allowed to retain the best score. This is being done to ensure students have enough time and opportunity to perform well. Students can then appear for a board exam in subjects they have completed and feel ready for.

Situated at the foothills of the Zabarwan mountain range on the banks of Dal Lake, the tulip garden of Kashmir was finally recognised as Asia's largest tulip garden and certified in the World Book of Records (London). The Department of Floriculture, Gardens and Parks was awarded the certificate by the Chairman and CEO, of the World Book of Records (London) at a function held in Srinagar.
Tulip Garden Kashmir was established in 2008. For the last fifteen years everyone associated with the garden, like gardeners, officials have tried their best to make this garden one of the special attractions of Kashmir.

In July 2023, the Centre had appointed Justice Sheo Kumar Singh as the acting chairperson on the retirement of Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel.
Justice Shrivastava was the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court from October 11, 2021, to March 30, 2023.
Justice Shrivastava enrolled as an advocate on February 2, 1987. He practised in the Supreme Court and was appointed as judge of the High Court of Madhya Pradesh on January 18, 2008. He became a permanent judge on January 15, 2010.
