US Approves F-16 Fighter Jets for Transfer to Ukraine from Denmark and Netherlands

  • The US has granted approval for F-16 fighter jets to be sent to Ukraine from Denmark and the Netherlands.

  • Ukraine has been proactively pursuing US-made F-16 fighter jets to bolster its capacity in responding to Russia's aerial supremacy.

Govt. Launches 'FloodWatch' App for Real-time Flood Updates

  • Amid a rise in flood-related incidents in the country, including loss of life and property, the government launched an app to disseminate real-time information on the flood situation in affected areas.
  • The 'FloodWatch' app will collect data from 338 stations to send real-time flood updates across 23 states and Union Territories.
  • The app aims to use mobile phones to spread flood-related information and even provides forecasts for up to 7 days.
  • The app uses advanced technologies such as satellite data analysis, mathematical modelling, and real-time monitoring to deliver accurate and timely flood forecasts.

RBI Appoints P. R. Seshadri as MD and CEO of South Indian Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India approved the appointment of P. R. Seshadri as the Managing Director and CEO of the Thrissur based South Indian Bank.
  • The appointment will be for a period of three years with effect from October 1.
  • Seshadri is an accomplished banker with experiences spanning multiple businesses, functional lines and geographies. He has significant experiences in enterprise level management and in the management of all key commercial banking business lines.
  • He has served as, amongst other positions, MD & CEO of The Karur Vysya Bank Limited (KVB), MD & Regional Sales and Distribution Head, Citibank N.A., Asia Pacific, Singapore and so on.

Chess World Cup: Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa Beats Arjun Erigaisi to Book Semis Berth

  • Indian Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa defeated compatriot Arjun Erigaisi 5-4 via the sudden death tie-break to enter the semi-finals of the FIDE World Cup chess tournament.
  • With the win, Praggnanandhaa booked a place in the semi-finals against American ace Fabiano Caruana and almost secured a spot in next year's Candidates event. The teenaged chess star from Chennai, by virtually securing a place in the Candidates tournament, would be the only other Indian other than five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand to feature in the Candidates.

Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports Organises Y20 Summit in Varanasi

  • Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports organised Youth 20 Summit-2023 from 17th to 20th of August in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. More than 100 delegates from G20 countries, Guest countries and International Organizations discussed five identified themes of Y20. These themes included Future of Work: Industry 4.0, Innovation and 21st Century Skills, Peace Building and Reconciliation: Ushering in an Era of No War, and Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction.
  • Youth20 is one of the official Engagement Groups of the G20. The Youth20 (Y20) Engagement Group organised discussions and consultations pan-India, to consult the youth of the nation on ideas for a better tomorrow and draft an agenda for action. Y20 has proved to be a platform for youth to express their perspectives and ideas on G20 priorities.

IAF to Hold Multi-National Exercise 'Tarang Shakti' Next Year

  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) is gearing up to host a colossal multilateral military exercise, 'Tarang Shakti', which was originally slated for October but has been rescheduled to the middle of 2024. The decision to push the exercise to next year came as several participating air forces expressed their inability to join the war-game if held in the current year.
  • Tarang Shakti' is set to draw the involvement of some prominent air forces, including those of France, the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States, and Japan.
  • These nations will contribute their aerial assets such as fighter jets, military transport aircraft, and mid-air refuelers to the exercise.
  • Additionally, six other countries have been invited to participate as observers, further emphasizing the exercise's significance on the global stage.
  • The upcoming exercise is anticipated to serve as an impressive showcase of international teamwork and military capabilities, with the involvement of around 12 air forces.
  • The main goal of 'Tarang Shakti' is to reinforce military coordination and amplify the seamless interaction between the participating countries.

Sadbhavana Diwas

  • The birth anniversary of India's sixth Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi is observed as Sandbhavana Diwas or Harmony Day every year on August 20 in the country. It is dedicated to the cause of encouraging peace, national integration, and communal harmony among all religions in the country. On Harmony Day, several cultural events and contests are organised across states. People take a pledge of working towards establishing peace and harmony in the country.
  • The day was first observed in 1992, more than a year after Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in a suicide bomb attack in Tamil Nadu's Sriperumbudur.
  • As a tribute to Raji Gandhi's contribution to promoting communal harmony, national integration and peace, the All India Congress Committee established the Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award in 1992. This award is given to people who have done exemplary work in establishing peace in society. The inaugural award was given to the founder of SOS Children's Village of India, Jagan Nath Kaul in 1995.

World Mosquito Day

  • Every year, World Mosquito Day is celebrated on August 20. This is done to commemorate the contributions of British doctor Sir Ronald Ross who was the first person to discover the connection between malaria and female anopheline mosquitoes.
  • In 1897, Sir Ronald Ross discovered that mosquitoes are responsible for transmitting malaria. Every year, The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine celebrates this day with parties and exhibitions to create awareness about the dangers of mosquitoes and finding ways by which we can protect ourselves from these deadly diseases.

Akshay Urja Day

  • Every year on August 20 India observes Akshay Urja Diwas or Renewable Energy Day. This day makes people aware of the use of natural resources like wind energy, solar energy, and hydropower.
  • Akshay Urja Diwas was first established in 2004 to support renewable energy development programs in India and promote the usage of natural resources. In 2004, the first event was facilitated by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, where he released a stamp with 12000 children forming a human chain to promote the use of green energy sources.

UGC Drafts Guidelines to Recognise Foreign Degrees, Bars Online or Distance Mode

  • The UGC released draft guidelines for recognition of degrees from foreign institutions and left out degrees obtained under online or distance education mode.
  • The regulations will not be applicable to professional qualifications awarded by foreign educational institutions in disciplines such as Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Law, and Architecture.
  • Guidelines were also issued for educational qualifications from schools under a foreign board, or any degree from an offshore campus.
  • The regulations came at a time when foreign universities are in the advanced stages of setting up campuses at GIFT City in Gujarat and Indian universities are collaborating with institutions abroad to offer dual or joint degrees.
  • A degree from a foreign higher educational institution will be recognised and granted equivalence only if a student physically attends an institute recognised by the home country, the UGC stated.

Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Appointment of Justice C. S. Sudha as Permanent Judge of Kerala High Court

  • The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, recommended the appointment of Additional Judge of the Kerala High Court, Justice C. S. Sudha, as a permanent judge.
  • The Collegium has consulted with Judges of the Supreme Court who were conversant with the functioning of the High Court of Kerala.
  • Justice C. S. Sudha entered judicial services in the year 1995 and was sworn in as Additional judge of the Kerala High Court on August 10, 2021.
  • The Kerala High Court Collegium had recommended her appointment as permanent judge on June 21, 2023. The Chief Minister and Governor of Kerala have concurred to this recommendation.
