Morocco Enters Race to Join BRICS, Officially Submits Application
Morocco officially submitted its bid to join the BRICS grouping, or Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. This came ahead of next week's much-anticipated summit in South Africa.
With this, the Kingdom of Morocco joins other nations like Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, and Egypt, which are also vying for a spot in the economic alliance.
Previously, in July 2023, Algeria applied for a spot in the bloc and also submitted a request to become a shareholder member of the BRICS Bank. The North African nation, as per a Reuters report, seeks to join the economic alliance to open up new economic opportunities.
Former Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin Acquitted of Four Graft Charges
Former Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin was acquitted by the High Court of four corruption charges, just days after his opposition bloc expanded its influence in local elections.
Muhyiddin said that the High Court ruled in favour of his application to overturn four charges of abusing his power to obtain 232.5 million ringgit ($50 million) in bribes for his Bersatu party.
He was charged in March 2023 and still faces three charges of money laundering involving 200 million ringgit ($43 million).
NASA Terms July as Hottest Month on Record Ever Since 1880
The US space agency NASA confirmed that July was the hottest month on record ever since 1880, as heat waves and wildfires hit the cities in the US and Europe.
According to scientists at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York, July 2023 was hotter than any other month in the global temperature record.
Overall, July 2023 was 0.24 degrees Celsius warmer than any other July in NASA's record, and it was 1.18 degrees Celsius warmer than the average July between 1951 and 1980.
High sea surface temperatures contributed to July's record warmth. NASA's analysis shows especially warm ocean temperatures in the eastern tropical Pacific, evidence of the El Nino that began developing in May 2023.
RBI Selects McKinsey and Company, Accenture Solutions to Use AI, ML to Improve Regulatory Supervision
The Reserve Bank selected global consultancy firms McKinsey and Company India LLP and Accenture Solutions Pvt Ltd India to develop systems using artificial intelligence and machine learning for its supervisory functions. The RBI is looking to extensively use advanced analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyse its huge database and improve regulatory supervision over banks and NBFCs. For this purpose, the central bank plans to hire external experts.
In September 2022, the RBI invited expressions of interest (EoI) for engaging consultants for the use of advanced analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning for generating supervisory inputs.
Bank of Maharashtra Tops List of Public Sector Lenders in Loan in Q1 2023
State-owned Bank of Maharashtra (BoM) emerged as the top performer among public sector lenders in loan and deposit growth in percentage terms during the first quarter of the current financial year.
The deposit and advances of the Pune-based lender recorded a nearly 25 percent rise, the highest by any public sector bank during the April-June quarter.
It was followed by UCO Bank with 20.70 per cent growth, while Bank of Baroda with 16.80 per cent and Indian Overseas Bank with 16.21 per cent growth were third and fourth, respectively.
Centre Appoints R. Doraiswamy as LIC Managing Director
The Centre appointed R. Doraiswamy, Executive Director, Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) as Managing Director of the insurance behemoth.
Doraiswamy will replace Ipe Mini, who is currently an MD of LIC and is due to superannuate at the end of this month (August 2023).
The Financial Services Institutions Bureau (FSIB), the head-hunter for directors of state-owned banks and financial institutions, in June 2023, had recommended the name of Doraiswamy as MD.
The FSIB is headed by Bhanu Pratap Sharma, former secretary, of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
First Space-based Indian Observatory Aditya-L1, Ready for Launch
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced that India's first space-based solar observatory, PSLV-C57/Aditya-L1 Mission, is ready to launch. This big project marks the country's mission that could revolutionise the understanding of the Sun's dynamics and space weather.
Aditya-L1, named after the Sun's core, aims to provide unprecedented insights into the Sun's behaviour by placing itself in a halo orbit around the Lagrange point 1 (L1) of the Sun-Earth system, approximately 1.5 million kilometres from Earth.
The spacecraft is equipped with seven advanced payloads designed to scrutinize various layers of the Sun, from the photosphere and chromosphere to the outermost layer, the corona.

Odisha Launches Scheme to Improve Banking Penetration
The Odisha Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik gave nod to open CSP Plus banking outlets in 4,373 unbanked gram panchayats (GPs) at a cost of Rs. 500 crore.
As per Finance Minister B. K. Arukha, the CSP (customer service point) Plus banking outlets will be opened in coordination with six public sector banks (PSBs).
The six PSBs, State Bank of India (SBI), Punjab National Bank (PNB), UCO Bank, Union Bank of India, Bank of Baroda and Bank of India, will help in opening the facilities in 4,373 unbanked gram panchayats.
Shatrujeet Kapoor is New Haryana DGP
The Haryana Government appointed1990-batch IPS officer Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor as the new Director-General of Police (DGP). He succeeded P. K. Agarwal who retired on the completion of a two-year term.
Kapoor's appointment came six days after the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) empanelment committee met and shortlisted three IPS officers — Muhammad Akil (1988 batch), Ramesh Chandra Mishra (1989 batch) and Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor (1990 batch), for the Haryana DGP's post.

He was also the chairman of many central government science committees. He was also on all committees of the Indian Council of medical research.
Indian Football Legend Mohammed Habib Passes Away
Mohammed Habib, the playmaker par excellence of the 1970s who scored against Pele's New York Cosmos in Mohun Bagan colours and made the football icon take note of his game, passed away. The former India player was 74.
A bronze medallist in the 1970 Asian Games in Bangkok under the captaincy of fellow Hyderabadi Syed Nayeemuddin and manager PK Banerjee, Habib has represented the big three of Kolkata Maidan -- Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting in his heydays, dominating the Mecca of Indian football for a prolonged period in the late 1960s through to the 70s.
Following a successful career that saw him gain legendary status and earn the tag of the country's first "true professional" footballer for his refusal to accept numerous job offers that came his way owing to his on-field heroics, Habib took to coaching at the Tata Football Academy (TFA).
Later, he also acted as chief coach of the Indian Football Association academy in Haldia.
Sulabh International Founder Bindeshwar Pathak Passes Away
Sulabh International founder, Padma Bhushan recipient, and social worker Bindeshwar Pathak passed away at the age of 80.
Credited with bringing in the revolutionary Sulabh Complex public toilet system to India, which contributed significantly to reducing open-defecation and manual scavenging, Pathak was closely associated with his non-profit and worked till the end.
Born and educated in Bihar, Pathak had founded Sulabh International Social Services Organisation in 1970 to introduce a public toilet system in India that would go on to become a feature of hundreds of towns. He was conferred with the Padma Bhushan in 1991 for social work and later became an ambassador for the government's Swachh Bharat Mission.

Amit Shah said that this award for excellence in delivering e-governance is a recognition of the dedication the entire NAFIS team has put into creating a fool-proof fingerprint identification system, in pursuit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a secure India.
The NAFIS has revolutionized the fingerprint recognition system in crime control. With this system, the work of tracing the involvement of interstate criminals in crimes is being done with greater ease, accuracy and efficiency across the country.

Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023: New and Repealed Provisions, Drafting Errors and More
The Central government introduced three new Bills in the Lok Sabha to replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and the Indian Evidence Act.
These are Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 to replace IPC of 1860, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 to replace CrPC of 1973 and, Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, 2023 to replace the Indian Evidence Act of 1872.
The Bills have been referred to a parliamentary standing committee for further examination.
Govt. to Launch Vishwakarma Yojana for Skilled Traditional Craftsmen
The Centre is soon launching a special scheme 'Vishwakarma Yojana' for traditional craftsmen and workers, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day speech.
The scheme, which is expected to mainly benefit other backward classes (OBCs), will be launched during Vishwakarma Jayanti on September 17. It will have an initial outlay of Rs. 13,000-15,000 crore.
The scheme will benefit individuals skilled in traditional craftsmanship, particularly from the OBC community. Weavers, goldsmiths, blacksmiths, laundry workers, barbers, and their families will be empowered through the Vishwakarma Yojana.

Centre Renames Nehru Memorial as Prime Ministers' Museum and Library
The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) was officially renamed as the Prime Ministers' Museum and Library Society, Nripendra Misra, chairperson of the executive council of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) said.
In mid-June, during a special meeting of the NMML Society, it was resolved to change its name to PMML Society.

CJI Chandrachud Launches 'Suswagatam' Portal for E-passes to Enter Supreme Court
Chief Justice of India, Justice D. Y. Chandrachud, launched a new visitor management system for the Supreme Court.
The Suswagatam portal allows lawyers, litigants, clerks, visitors and media persons to register with the app and generate entry e-passes for the Supreme Court online. This app will generate an entry pass and the visitor will be 'Photo-identified' in real time at the time of entry. This removes the long lines for entry passes at the Supreme Court gate.
The access-control entry/ exit software allows the users to register themselves online and request e-passes for various purposes, such as attending court hearings, visiting office blocks, meeting advocates as litigants, or visiting the media lounge.
The new initiative allows users to choose different validity periods for their e-passes, depending on their needs and police clearance certificates. The portal also provides role-based secure logins for different types of users where they can upload their proof of identity and capture their live photo during the registration process.
The Suswagatam portal has been tested as a pilot project since July 25 and has received positive feedback from users.
Alarming that over 2.7 lakh Cases Pending in Karnataka High Court: Chief Justice P. B. Varale
Karnataka High Court Chief Justice P. B. Varale opined that there is an urgent need to clear pending cases in courts in the State, considering that there are over 2.7 lakh cases pending before the three benches of the High Court.
He also noted that Alternative Dispute Resolution mechanisms can play a vital role in reducing case pendency, thereby easing the burden on courts and enhancing access to justice.
Chief Justice Varale was speaking at an event organized to mark the 77th Independence Day.
Supreme Court Launches Handbook on Combating Gender Stereotypes
The Supreme Court come up with a handbook which would deal with combating gender stereotypes guiding judges for avoiding inappropriate usage of gender terms in court orders and legal documents.
The Chief Justice of India (CJI) D. Y. Chandrachud said that book identifies stereotypes unwittingly used by courts in various judgments.
He said they have been highlighted so that it will help judges to avoid stereotyping by recognising language that leads to such stereotypes.
The Chief Justice of India also said that the certain decisions have been highlighted for ensuring usage of terms which should be avoided by judges in future. It also added not to cast any aspersion on such judgments or the judges who authored those verdicts.
The CJI said that the handbook identifies stereotypes used by courts and how they are unwittingly used.
