Protean eGov partners PayNearby to democratise credit through ONDC
Protean eGov Technologies Limited (Protean) has joined hands with PayNearby, a branchless banking and digital network, to make credit services more accessible and affordable for Indians across the country leveraging the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC).
This marketplace will be launched soon for last-mile borrowers and MSMEs. Once launched the marketplace will also allow for easy discovery of various lending products at affordable pricing to its borrowers.
This initiative is expected to facilitate both individuals and businesses at the last mile with viable credit options.
In this partnership, Protean (previously NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure) will serve as an ONDC technology service provider that facilitates availability of credit for last-mile borrowers across the country through PayNearby's Distribution-as-a-Service (DaaS) network.
By making this service available through 12+ lakh active PayNearby outlets, the partnership aims to broad-base credit access for India and Bharat both and lay the foundation of a more inclusive society.
Brazil's Amazon Summit ends with a plan to protect the world's rainforests, but no measurable goals
Brazil's Amazon Summit closed on August 9 with a roadmap to protect tropical rainforests that was welcomed as an important step in countering climate change, but without the concrete commitments sought by some environmentalists to end deforestation.Leaders and Ministers from eight Amazon nations signed a declaration on August 8 in Belem, Brazil, that laid out plans to drive economic development in their countries while preventing the Amazon's ongoing demise "from reaching a point of no return."
"It is significant that the leaders of the countries of the region have listened to the science and understood the call of society: the Amazon is in danger, and we do not have much time to act," the international group WWF said in a statement. "However, WWF regrets that the eight Amazonian countries, as one front, have not reached a common point to end deforestation in the region."
Noining the summit on August 9 were the Presidents of the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo, an emissary from Indonesia's President, and France's Ambassador to Brazil, representing the Amazonian territory of French Guiana. Launch of Indian Web Browser Development Challenge (IWBDC)
Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) launched the Indian Web Browser Development Challenge (IWBDC) on 9th August 2023 in Launch Programme organized at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. Smt. Sunita Verma, Scientist G & Group Coordinator (R&D in Electronics & Information Technology), Shri Arvind Kumar, Controller of Certifying Authorities, MeitY and Dr. S. D. Sudarshan, Executive Director C-DAC, Bangalore jointly launched the browser development challenge. The challenge brochure was also unfolded by the dignitaries on the dais.
The Indian Web Browser Development Challenge is spearheaded by MeitY, CCA and C-DAC Bangalore.
The IWBDC is an Open Challenge Competition that seeks to inspire and empower technology enthusiasts, innovators, and developers from all corners of the country to create an indigenous web browser with its own trust store with an inbuilt CCA India root certificate, cutting edge functionalities and enhanced security & data privacy protection features.
Proposed browser would also focus on accessibility and user friendliness, ensuring built-in support for individuals with diverse abilities. Moreover, the browser envisions the ability to digitally sign documents using a crypto token, bolstering secure transactions and digital interactions.
Army Chief General Manoj Pande leaves for U.K. on five-day visit
Army Chief General Manoj Pande on August 9 left for the U.K. on a five-day visit to attend a prestigious military event and hold talks with the top British defence brass on bilateral strategic issues.
Gen Pande will review the 201st Sovereign's Parade of Commissioning Course at the prestigious Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst as the 'Sovereign's Representative' for the parade.
The Sovereign's Parade at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst is a reputed event, known for its illustrious history and the passing out of officer cadets from across the globe.
Gen Pande is the first Chief of the Army Staff from India to be the Sovereign's Representative for the parade, according to the Army.
The Chief of Army Staff will also be visiting the Indian Army Memorial room which occupies a place of pride in the Royal Military Academy.
He is scheduled to hold talks with Gen Sir Patrick Sanders, Chief of General Staff of the British Army and Gen Gwyn Jenkins, Vice Chief of Defence Staff of the U.K. armed forces.
Union Home Ministry to fund ₹561 crore flood risk management project for Chennai
The Disaster Management Division of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs will fund the project for integrated urban flood management for Chennai basin, which seeks to re-establish surplus canals for erstwhile minor irrigations tanks in the city. The work is estimated at ₹189 crore.
The projects also includes the installation of software for remote operation of the surplus regulators during emergency and water supply regulators or sluices in the city reservoirs at an estimated cost of ₹32 crore.The civic officials submitted proposals for flood mitigation work estimated at ₹561 crore in the city. Work will be implemented for routing the floods through Madhavaram tank in Kosasthalaiyar basin
INS Chennai engages in joint exercise with Royal Saudi Naval Ship HMS Al Jubail
In a clear demonstration of its commitment to ensuring secure maritime environments, the Indian Navy has strategically positioned its indigenous guided missile destroyer, INS Chennai, within the Red Sea. This strategic move signifies a significant step toward safeguarding global waters.
In a bid to further enhance the spirit of camaraderie and multifaceted defense alliances between India and Saudi Arabia, INS Chennai conducted a notable port call to Jeddah from August 3rd to 5th during this port visit, the Commanding Officer of INS Chennai engaged in a productive interaction with the Commander of Jeddah Border Guards. Moreover, as part of the diplomatic exchange, Mohd Shahid Alam, CGI Jeddah, visited the ship to acquaint himself with its operational prowess.
The vessel's arrival was met with warm receptions from dignitaries representing the Royal Saudi Naval forces, Border Guards, and the Indian Embassy. Following its port call, INS Chennai embarked on a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with the Royal Saudi Naval Ship HMS Al Jubail on August 5th.

Exiled Belarus opposition leader wins Swedish rights prize
Exiled Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya on Wednesday won a rights prize in memory of Sweden's assassinated foreign minister Anna Lindh for her "tireless" fight for democracy, the award's organisers said.
The Anna Lindh Prize, worth 100,000 Swedish kronor ($9,400), is given "to encourage primarily women and youth who, in Anna Lindh's spirit, show the courage to work against indifference, prejudice, oppression and injustice", according to the Anna Lindh Memorial Fund that awards the honour.
Tikhanovskaya, who claimed victory against Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko in 2020 presidential elections, has been in exile since the aftermath of the disputed vote, and lives in Lithuania.
