PM Modi to be Guest of Honour at France's Bastille Day Parade

  • On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the India-France Strategic Partnership, Prime Minister Narendra Modi accepted French President Emmanuel Macron's invitation to attend this year's (2023) Bastille Day Parade as Guest of Honour on July 14 in Paris.
  • To mark this milestone, an Indian armed forces contingent will participate in the Parade alongside their French counterparts. Prime Minister's visit is expected to herald the next phase in the India-France Strategic Partnership by setting new and ambitious goals for our strategic, cultural, scientific, academic, economic cooperation, including in a wide range of industries.

Lithium Reserves Found in Rajasthan

  • Lithium reserves were traced in Degana, Rajasthan.
  • According to mining as well the Geological Survey of India (GSI) officials, the reserves are said to be higher than the ones found in Jammu & Kashmir in February 2023.
  • Officials have alleged that the quantity of lithium here can meet 80 percent of the country's demand.
  • At present, 47 per cent of the world's lithium is produced in Australia, 30 per cent in Chile and 15 per cent in China. However, China processes 58 per cent of the world's lithium, Chile 29 per cent and Argentina 10 per cent.

Marico Re-appoints Saugata Gupta as MD & CEO

  • FMCG major Marico's board re-appointed Saugata Gupta as its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer for another term of two years. Gupta's reappointment is effective from April 1, 2024.
  • He had joined Marico in 2004 as the Head of Marketing and was elevated to CEO of India Business in 2007. In 2014, he took over as Managing Director of the company.
  • Besides, the company's board has appointed Rajan Bharti Mittal as an independent director for a term of five years, beginning from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2028.
  • Mittal is the Vice-Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, one of India's leading conglomerates with diversified interests in Telecom, Space Communications, Digital Solutions, Financial Services, Real Estate, Agri-Processed foods in addition to other ventures.
  • Both the appointments are "subject to the approval of the shareholders.

Aurionpro Payments Gets RBI Approval to Operate as Payment Aggregator

  • Aurionpro Payment Solutions Ltd (APSL) received in-principle approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to operate as payment aggregator under the Payment and Settlement Act, 2007. AuroPay can commence payment aggregator business upon receiving the final certificate of authorisation from RBI.
  • APSL is founded by Aurionpro Solutions Ltd which offers solutions in the fintech space.
  • AuroPay' seeks to offer a bouquet of e-payment options which are safe, secure, user-friendly and affordable. The aim is to become a one-stop shop, offering a wide range of services in the payment ecosystem globally, catering to e-commerce businesses as well as SMEs which are rapidly adopting digital technologies.

Accenture India Chief Rekha Menon to Retire

  • Accenture India announced leadership changes as Rekha M. Menon, senior Managing Director and Chairperson, retires from the global professional services company on June 30.
  • Ajay Vij will take up the newly created role of country Managing Director, and Sandeep Dutta will lead the India Market Unit. The Chairperson's primary responsibilities will now be undertaken by the two new appointees.
  • During her 20-year career at Accenture, Menon held various roles across markets. As chairperson, she expanded Accenture's business, strengthened its presence in communities and built relationships with key industries, governments, and clients. She pioneered the India corporate citizenship strategy and championed the company's inclusion and diversity agenda.

Technology Business Park in Vizag to be Setup by AdaniConneX

  • AdaniConneX, a company owned by Adani Enterprises, is constructing an Integrated Data Center and Technology Business Park in Madhurawada, Vizag with the goal of boosting the local technology ecosystem. According to the company, the facility will include a data centre, technology and business park, as well as a skill development centre.
  • It is the first of three planned technology zones in Vizag and will be one of India's largest hyperscale parks. The facility is expected to create new opportunities for growth in the region, connecting Vizag to the APAC IT ecosystem.

Delhi HC Appoints Former Karnataka HC Judge as Basketball Federation of India Administrator

  • Former judge of the Karnataka High Court, P. Krishna Bhat, was appointed by the Delhi High Court as the administrator of the Basketball Federation of India (BFI) to conduct elections in the organization. The appointment is effective immediately, and the administrator will continue to function until a newly-elected body takes charge of BFI. The court instructed the administrator to ensure that the election process is concluded as soon as possible according to the Sports Code. This decision was made in response to several petitions regarding the election of office bearers and executive committee members for the term 2023-2027.
  • The Basketball Federation of India (BFI) is the governing and controlling body of basketball in India. It is responsible for the development and promotion of the sports authority of India at all levels. BFI manages all the national-level basketball operations in India and sports authority of India is also undertaking basketball federation of India.
  • BFI, was formed in 1950. Poonam Mahajan was the president (and also the first female president) of Basketball Federation of India. The Basketball Federation of India has its headquarter in New Delhi.

Olympic Silver Medallist Nijel Amos Gets 3-year Ban

  • According to the Athletics Integrity Unit, Nijel Amos, who won a silver medal in the men's 800 m at the 2012 Olympics, was given a three-year ban for doping. Amos, who hails from Botswana, tested positive for the banned substance GW1516 in the lead-up to last year's (2022) track world championships. However, he received a reduction on the standard four-year ban for admitting to the charges. Unfortunately, this means that Amos will not be able to participate in the Paris Olympics next year (2024) due to the ban.
  • Nijel Amos was provisionally suspended pending an investigation in July 2022, and his three-year ban for doping has been backdated to that date. Therefore, the ban will continue until 2025.

Neeraj Chopra Wins 2023 Doha Diamond League

  • Neeraj Chopra won the Doha leg of the Diamond League with a throw of 88.67 m to mark his return to competition in 2023.
  • He won by a very small margin as Czech Republic's Jakub Vadlejch finished second with a throw of 88.63 m, just four centimetres short of Chopra's mark. World Champion Andersen Peters finished third with a best throw of 85.88 m.

Meghalaya: PDF Announces Merger with NPP

  • The People's Democratic Front (PDF) announced that it will merge with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma's NPP. The PDF is a part of the NPP-led ruling coalition in the state, and has two MLAs in the assembly, whose current strength is 59. After the merger, NPP's tally will rise to 28. The decision to merge was unanimously taken at PDF's general council meeting, chaired by its president Gavin M Mylliem, who is one of the two MLAs.
  • The merger document was signed between NPP national chief Conrad K. Sangma and the PDF president, Lyngdoh.

Haryana Govt. to Introduce a New Feature on Haryana-eSamiksha Portal

  • Haryana Government will be introducing a new feature on the Haryana-eSamiksha portal to enable Administrative Secretaries and Head of Departments to monitor the follow-up action taken on decisions made during their meetings and presentations. This was discussed during a meeting led by the Chief Secretary, Sanjeev Kaushal, along with officers from the Human Resource Department and National Informatics Centre.
  • Kaushal informed that the portal will provide updates on file number, meeting date, chairperson, meeting description, and other documents such as the minutes of meeting (MOM), which can be accessed by officers of the concerned departments. Additionally, the portal facilitates the automatic tracking of action points, proposals, issues, projects, schemes, and targets, starting from online submission to compliance. The new feature will enhance the monitoring and tracking of important decisions thereby increasing accountability and transparency in the administrative processes.

Rajnath Singh Initiates Construction of Coast Guard Establishment in Maldives

  • The Defence Minister of India, Rajnath Singh, and his Maldivian counterpart, Mariya Didi, initiated the construction of a harbour at Sifavaru for the coast guard of Maldives. This move is aimed at enhancing the country's maritime security capabilities, especially as China is increasing its presence in the Indian Ocean Region by sending more warships and undertaking projects in the region.
  • The coast guard facility will stop the Maldives from sending its ships abroad for maintenance.
  • The coast guard functions as the armed maritime unit of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), which has received patrol vessels and surveillance aircraft from India because the Maldives does not have a navy.

Navy Decommissions INS Magar after 36 Years of Service

  • INS Magar, the oldest landing ship of the Indian Navy was decommissioned after a prestigious service to the country for 36 years.
  • The ship, commanded by Cdr Hemant V. Salunkhe, was decommissioned at a ceremony held at the Naval Base.
  • The ship's timeline and a special postage cover were also released during the ceremony which was witnessed by dignitaries including senior personnel from the Armed forces, veterans and civil administration.
  • INS Magar was launched on November 16, 1984 by Meera Tahiliani and commissioned on July 18, 1987 at Garden Reach Shipyard and Engineers Limited, Kolkata by late Admiral R. H. Tahiliani.
  • During her service, she participated in numerous operations, amphibious exercises and humanitarian missions and operations including Samudra Setu wherein more than 4,000 Indian nationals were repatriated from various corners of the world, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

World Red Cross Day

  • Red Cross Day, also known as Red Crescent Day, is celebrated annually on May 8, to commemorate the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant. He was the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, born on May 8, 1828. This day is a yearly celebration of the principles of the Red Cross Society, which operates in numerous countries.
  • World Red Cross Day has its roots in World War I, where the notion of an annual commemoration to honour those who contributed to global peace was initially suggested. The Tokyo conference in 1936 approved the proposal named the "Red Cross Truce," but the League of Red Cross Societies (LRCS) postponed it until after World War II in 1946. The first-ever Red Cross Day was eventually observed on May 8, 1948.
  • The theme of World Red Cross Day 2023 was - 'Everything we do comes from the heart.'

World Thalassaemia Day

  • World Thalassaemia Day 2023 is observed on May 8 annually.
  • Thalassaemia is an inherited disorder where the oxygen-carrying proteins in the blood – also known as haemoglobin – and red blood cells are lesser than normal.
  • Panos Englezos, President and founder of Thalassemia International Federation created this day in 1994 in the memory of his son George and other Thalassemia patients who fought the disease bravely. Since then, every year, World Thalassemia Day is observed on May 8.
  • Thalassemia International Federation designates a new theme for World Thalassemia Day every year. The theme for World Thalassemia Day 2023 was "Be Aware. Share. Care: Strengthening Education to Bridge the Thalassaemia Care Gap."

WHO Declares End to Covid-19 Global Health Emergency

  • The World Health Organization ended the global emergency status for COVID-19 more than three years after its original declaration, and said that countries should now manage the virus that killed more than 6.9 million people along with other infectious diseases.
  • The global health agency's Emergency Committee met and recommended the UN organization declare an end to the coronavirus crisis as a "public health emergency of international concern" - its highest level of alert - which has been in place since Jan. 30, 2020.
  • Ending the emergency could mean that international collaboration or funding efforts are also brought to an end or shift in focus, although many have already adapted as the pandemic receded in different regions.

IIM-Sambalpur Launches Delhi Campus

  • The Indian Institute of Management (IIM)-Sambalpur launched its new campus in the national capital with courses for working professionals and entrepreneurs.
  • The objective of setting up a centre in Delhi is to tap a lot of working professionals, executives and entrepreneurs who want to pursue management studies on weekends from a premium IIM besides continuing their respective trade and profession.
  • Delhi, the capital of the nation, and its adjoining NCR cities host several government and public sector units, headquarters of corporate houses and big family businesses. There is a large pool of potential candidates.
  • Founded in 2015, the main campus of IIM-Sambalpur in Odisha offers PG, doctoral and MDP programmes to students.

Centre for Innovation Incubation Research and Entrepreneurship Inaugurated in Telangana

  • In Telangana, the Centre for Innovation Incubation Research and Entrepreneurship (C-i2 RE) was inaugurated by IT Minister K. Taraka Ramarao at the Kakatiya Institute of Technology & Science (KITS) Warangal campus.
  • The Centre will promote innovation and entrepreneurship in the student community to inculcate research and innovative skills among the students, faculty, and young researchers. Over five crore rupees have been invested in the necessary infrastructural facilities. The Centre will be helpful to design live projects for the benefit of society. The main objective of the Innovation Centre is to face the latest Engineering, technological and entrepreneurship challenges in the 21st Century and to adopt advanced technologies. KITS Warangal is known for its quality education and the ethical behaviour of students in their place of work.

Rajnath Singh Inaugurates IAF Heritage Centre in Chandigarh

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the first-of-its-kind Indian Air Force (IAF) Heritage Centre in Chandigarh.
  • Spread over 17,000 square feet, this is the first heritage centre of the IAF and depicts its role in various wars, including in 1965 and 1971 and the Kargil war, and the Balakot air strike through murals and memorabilia.
  • Divided into various sections, the heritage centre has several attractions such as aircraft models, aero engines and weapons, including Gryazev-Shipunov twin-barrelled guns.
  • The centre also showcases augmented reality, hologram, virtual reality, and electro-mechanical enclosures, interactive kiosks highlighting various facets of the IAF.
  • There are also flying simulators at the centre which will give flight experience to visitors.

Two Thousand Year-old 'Modern Society' Unearthed in Bandhavgarh National Park

  • Archeologists uncovered several archaeological treasures from the Bandhavgarh National Park in Madhya Pradesh. If reports are to go by, they discovered paintings, water bodies that are man-made, along with a few other pieces of evidence.
  • Revealing more about the findings, experts stated that the tiger reserve of the present day was once most likely part of an old trade route, through which traders passed and used the rock-cut caves as their shelters.
  • Archeologists also got hold of a 1,500-year-old rock painting, along with several man-made water bodies, which are believed to be no lesser than 1,800-2,000 years old, from the national park in Madhya Pradesh.
  • Referring to this, an ASI official in the know-how added that the presence of the water bodies built at a height and used for collecting rainwater suggests that the habitation had a modern society.
  • As reported earlier too, this zone has often made it to the headlines for what it holds and what gets unearthed from time to time.

Delhi's 'Haunted Heritage Walk' Kicks off from Malcha Mahal

  • Delhi's first 'Haunted Heritage Walk', organised by the city government's Tourism department, started with a guided tour of Malcha Mahal.
  • Located inside the Ridge forest near Chanakyapuri in the heart of the national capital, Malcha Mahal was built by Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlaq and used as a hunting lodge.
  • Among the other sites that the walk will cover include Bhooli Bhatiyari ka Mahal, Feroze Shah Kotla and the Tughlaqabad Fort.
  • The Tourism department is identifying "haunted" sites in the national capital to conduct heritage walks.
  • A detailed plan on the "hidden and unexplored" historical places in the city is being prepared.
  • Heritage walks create a positive impact on tourism, enhance the brand value of the city and project its culture.
