Uzbeks Vote on Extended Tenure for President

  • Uzbekistan voted on constitutional amendments that promise its citizens greater social protections in exchange for resetting President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's term count to zero, which could allow him to stay in power until 2040.
  • Mirziyoyev has been praised at home and abroad as a liberal reformer for abandoning the previous leadership's isolationist policies and police state approach.
  • And while Tashkent's Western partners are unlikely to approve of the attempt to extend presidential powers, Uzbekistan risks little given the West is seeking support from all ex-Soviet nations in its efforts to isolate Russia over its war in Ukraine.
  • The reform also extends the presidential term to seven years from five.

Japan's New Five-year Ocean Policy

  • Japan adopted a new five-year ocean policy that calls for stronger maritime security, including bolstering its coast guard's capability and cooperation with the military amid China's increasing assertiveness in regional seas.
  • The new Basic Plan on Ocean Policy adopted by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's Cabinet also says Japan must accelerate the development of autonomous underwater vehicles and remotely operated robots to bolster its surveillance capability.
  • It cited a list of threats: Chinese coast guard ships' repeated intrusions into Japanese territorial waters, growing unauthorised maritime activity by "foreign survey boats" inside Japan's exclusive economic zone, increasing joint military exercises by China and Russia, and North Korea's repeated missile launches.

Govt. Appoints Debadatta Chand as Managing Director of Bank of Baroda

  • Bank of Baroda said that the government appointed Debadatta Chand, who is currently (as in May 2023) the Executive Director, as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
  • His appointment to the top post is for a period of three years with effect from the date of assumption of office on or after 01.07.2023, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
  • Chand succeeds Sanjiv Chadha, whose tenure was extended by the government for about five months till June 30. Chadha's original tenure was up to January 19. 2023.

Siddhartha Mohanty is New Chairperson of LIC

  • The government officially appointed Siddhartha Mohanty as the Chairperson of state-run Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India for two years.
  • Mohanty, who is one of the four Managing Directors at LIC, was already named as interim Chairperson in March 2023 for three months.
  • The term of M. R. Kumar as Chairperson of LIC of India completed on March 13, 2023.
  • Mohanty began his career as a direct recruit officer with the LIC of India in 1985 and has since held various senior positions within the company, gradually rising through the ranks.

Rajneesh Karnatak Selected as MD and Chairman of Bank of India

  • Rajneesh Karnatak was chosen by government as the Managing Director (MD) of Bank of India (BOI). Karnatak was Union Bank of India's Executive Director. As per repots, he would serve as MD & CEO of Bank of India for a term of three years beginning on the day of assumption of office or until further instructions.

Emirates Unveils World's First Robotic Check-In Assistant

  • Sara, the world's first robotic check-in assistant, was unveiled by Dubai-based airline Emirates. Sara is part of a new City Check-in and Travel Store which is in Dubai's financial district. The robot uses facial recognition technology to match customer's faces with scanned passports, check them in, and guide them to the luggage drop area.
  • Passengers can also drop luggage as early as 24 hours before their flight. Sara can print boarding passes and is portable, making it easier for travellers to get assistance if needed. Emirates passengers also have access to select lifestyle facilities with complimentary access to exclusive discounts at restaurants, gyms, and luxury stores. The Emirates airline is focused on enhancing the customer experience and leading the way in the aviation industry through technology and innovation.

Sultan Al Neyadi First Arab Astronaut to Complete Spacewalk on ISS

  • Sultan Al Neyadi created history becoming the first Arab astronaut to complete spacewalk on ISS. He completed the spacewalk during Expedition 69.
  • This accomplishment marks an important step forward for the Arab world's participation in space exploration.
  • The historic first Arab spacewalk lasted 7.01 hours in the vacuum of space on the starboard side of the International Space Station's truss structure, accomplishing two key objectives.

Shuttlers Satwik and Chirag Secure Asia Championships Title

  • Star doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty broke a 58-year-old drought, becoming the first Indians after Dinesh Khanna to be crowned champions at the Asia badminton Championships.
  • The 2022 World Championships bronze medallists scripted a sensational comeback after an opening game reversal to edge past Malaysian combination of Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi 21-16, 17-21, 19-21 in a nail-biting final to accomplish a magnificent victory in the continental championship.
  • Khanna is the only Indian to claim the gold medal, having achieved the feat when he beat Thailand's Sangob Rattanusorn in men's singles final in 1965 at Lucknow.
  • India's previous best performance in men's doubles at the Asia Championships was a bronze-medal finish by Dipu Ghosh and Raman Ghosh in 1971.

Nagal Wins Challenger Title on Clay

  • Sumit Nagal became the country's first player to win a European clay-court event on the ATP Challenger Tour, pulling off an upset win over higher-ranked Jesper de Jong.
  • Nagal won 6-3 6-2 against Netherlands' Jesper de Jong to clinch his third ATP Challenger title and the first since his triumph in Buenos Aires in 2019.

Mairaj, Ganemat Shoot Down gold at Shotgun World Cup

  • Mairaj Ahmad Khan and Ganemat Sekhon won the gold in mixed skeet as they outclassed Gabriela Rodriguez and Luis Oliveros of Mexico 6-0 in the shotgun World Cup in Cairo, Egypt.
  • The Indian pair topped qualification with 143, the same as Mexico, and won the shoot-off 4-3 and got the No.1 rank before the gold match.

Dhankhar to Attend Charles Coronation Event in May

  • Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar will represent the country at the coronation of King Charles III in London, his office confirmed.
  • The ceremony will be held on May 6 at the Westminster Abbey, with 2,000 guests in attendance, including several heads of states and ruling monarchs.
  • Dhankhar's participation at the coronation comes seven decades after the last such ceremony was held in the UK – that of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, wherein former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had represented India. In September 2022, President Droupadi Murmu visited London to pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth II on behalf of the Indian government, following her demise at the age of 96.

Road Transport and Highways Sector has Maximum Number of Delayed Projects

  • The road transport and highways sector has the maximum number of delayed projects at 402, followed by railways at 115 and the petroleum industry at 86, showed a government report.
  • In the road transport and highways sector, 402 out of 749 projects are delayed. For Railways, out of 173 projects, 115 are delayed, while in the petroleum sector, 86 out of 145 projects are running behind schedule, as per the latest report on infrastructure projects for March 2023.
  • The Infrastructure and Project Monitoring Division (IPMD) is mandated to monitor central sector infrastructure projects costing Rs. 150 crore and above based on the information provided on the Online Computerised Monitoring System (OCMS) by the project implementing agencies.
  • The IPMD comes under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. The report showed that the Muneerabad-Mahaboobnagar rail project is the most delayed. It is delayed by 276 months.

K. Mohanty is New Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission

  • Renowned physicist and Director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) Ajit Kumar Mohanty was appointed as the chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and the secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy. Mohanty succeeded K. N. Vyas to the posts that oversee India's nuclear programme and forays into harnessing atomic power for civilian needs.
  • Mohanty was appointed as the BARC director in March 2019.
  • In 1983, he joined the Nuclear Physics Division of the BARC after graduating from the 26th batch of the BARC Training School. He obtained his doctorate from the Mumbai University.
  • The Atomic Energy Commission of India is the governing body of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. The DAE is under the direct charge of the Prime Minister.
  • The Indian Atomic Energy Commission was set up on 3 August 1948.
  • The functions of the Atomic Energy Commission are: (i) to organise research in atomic science in the country (ii) to train atomic scientists in the country (iii) to promote nuclear research in commission's own laboratories in India (iv) to undertake prospecting of atomic minerals in India and to extract such minerals for use on industrial scale.

A First: Five Women Inducted into Artillery

  • Five women, who were commissioned as officers in the Indian Army today, have been inducted into the Regiment of Artillery making them the firsts to join a "major combat support" arm of the Army.
  • Meanwhile, Lieutenant Rekha Singh, wife of gallantry award-winning Army soldier Naik Deepak Singh who lost his life in the Galwan clash with China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh in June 2020, was commissioned into the Indian Army as an officer and has been posted in Ladakh.
  • The five women who were commissioned completed their training at the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai. Three of these officers have been posted to units deployed along northern borders (with China) and the other two at locations in the Western Theatre (facing Pakistan).
  • Lt Mehak Saini was commissioned into a SATA regiment, Lt Sakshi Dubey and Lt Aditi Yadav into field regiments, Lt Pious Mudgil was commissioned into a medium regiment and Lt Akanksha was commissioned into a rocket regiment.

International Labour Day

  • International Labour Day is observed globally on May 1 every year. The day spreads awareness about workers' rights and also recognises their accomplishments. Labour Day or May Day has different origin stories in different countries. But the common thing is that the day focuses on the achievements and contributions of workers. It spread awareness about the rights and opportunities of every Labour which they should get for their welfare and betterment.
  • In May 1886, 400,000 workers in many parts of the USA went on strike, demanding an eight-hour working day. The strike started peacefully, but on the third day of protests in Chicago there was some violence. The police shot at unarmed workers, killing several of them. The next day there were more protests and someone threw a bomb. Seven police officers and four workers were killed by the bomb or police shooting just after the bomb. The person who threw the bomb was never identified, but eight workers were arrested. Seven of them were sentenced to death, and one of them was sent to prison for 15 years.
  • This event, known as The Haymarket Affair, was very important in bringing working people together in the USA. The Haymarket Affair became an international symbol of the struggle for workers' rights, and May 1 was chosen to be International Workers' Day. On this day, socialist parties and trade unions called for workers to demonstrate for the eight-hour day and in favour of peaceful protest. The eight-hour working day became law for public workers in 1892 in the USA. Since then, workers' movements all over the world have continued to fight for and win this right.

Maharashtra Day

  • Every year on May 1, Maharashtra Day is observed. This day commemorates the beginning of Maharashtra's illustrious heritage.
  • On this day, in 1960, two new states were formed: Maharashtra and Gujarat. Both states had a disagreement about the city of Bombay. The Marathi people believed that Bombay should join them because the majority of the people there spoke Marathi.
  • A brand-new state, Bombay, was established on November 1, 1956, with the implementation of the States Reorganisation Act, 1956, which included the Marathi-speaking districts.
  • The bilingual state of Bombay was separated into two independent states, Maharashtra for Marathi-speaking people and Gujarat for Gujarati-speaking people, by the Bombay Reorganisation Act of 1960, with Gujarat becoming the 15th state of the Indian Union.

  • The Career Development Cell (CDC) at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) organised an informative session titled " Study, Scholarship & Job Opportunities in Japan" in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan and Japan Foundation.
  • The event attracted more than 200 participants, including faculty, students, and staff members from IIT Roorkee. Yasuhiro Yonehara spoke about the Japan Foundation and how it helps students to find the perfect institution and scholarships for pursuing their higher studies.

  • The Sinthan Maidan in Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir hosted the two-day Sinthan Snow Festival-2023, organised by the Directorate of Tourism, Jammu, and Kishtwar Tourism Development Authority (KTDA). The event was a collaboration between the District Administration Kishtwar, the Jammu & Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages (JKAACL), and the Army, and drew both locals and tourists alike.
  • The festival showcased a variety of activities, including a Bike Rally, Paragliding, Snow Kayaking, Fun Snow activities, Local cultural performances, and competitions.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Launches 'Reflections'

  • The Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman, launched a book called "Reflections". The author of the book is Narayanan Vaghul, a well-known banker, and it provides a detailed account of his experiences in the financial landscape of India over several decades. Sitharaman praised Vaghul for his leadership qualities and extensive experience in banking, as well as his contributions to mentoring leaders. She particularly highlighted his ideas and vision for women empowerment, which she believes will continue to be relevant and valuable as more women take on leadership roles in financial services in India.

Delhi High Court Gets Two New Additional Judges

  • The High Court of Delhi got two new additional judges as Judicial officers Girish Kathpalia and Manoj Jain were sworn-in to the post by Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma.
  • President Draupadi Murmu had given her assent to the elevation of these two judicial officers on April 2023.
  • Earlier in April, the Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud and also comprising Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice K. M. Joseph, had recommended appointment of three judicial officers as judges of the Delhi High Court.
