China Declares National Drought, Heat wave Threatens Crops

  • China issued its first national drought alert of the year after 66 rivers dried up in the country's southwest. The drought, coupled with intense heat waves due to forest fires, pose a serious threat to China's crops. Earlier this week, Chinese officials announced 'several new measures to help alleviate the drought impact,' including financial aid, cloud seeding and shutdowns of some energy-intensive industries.
  • The Washington Post called the crisis China's 'worst drought on record' as soaring temperatures dry up parts of the critical Yangtze River, damaging crops and limiting drinking water supplies to some rural communities.

Shiprocket Becomes India's 106th Unicorn, Raises $33.5 Million

  • Zomato-backed logistics technology platform Shiprocket became India's 106th unicorn after raising $33.5 million (about Rs. 270 crore) in a funding round co-led by Temasek and Lightrock India.
  • Shiprocket was valued at around $1.2 billion with the fresh round of funding.
  • The fresh funds will help Shiprocket extend its operating system by building newer software and intelligence products along with deepening its capability on the fulfilment and same-day delivery experience.
  • Launched in 2017, Shiprocket delivers packets to more than 66 million consumers annually and is growing 3 times year on year.

HDFC Bank Opens First All-women Branch in North Kerala's Kozhikode

  • Private sector bank major HDFC opened its first all-women branch in north Kerala region in Kozhikode.
  • The branch, located in Cherootty Road, the hub of traders in the district, will have 4 women bankers.
  • This adds to all-women branches opened by the Bank in southern India and takes forward the bank's inherent values of diversity and inclusion.
  • The branch was inaugurated by city Corporation Mayor Beena Philip.

Bengaluru to Host FIBA U-18 Women's Asian Basketball Championship

  • The International Basketball Federation FIBA is scheduled to host the FIBA U-18 Women's Asian Championship at Sree Kanteerva and Koramangala Indoor stadiums in Bengaluru from September 5 to 11. As many as 16 countries would participate in the event.
  • The championship will be in two divisions -- A and B. The countries in Division A are: China, Indonesia, India, Japan, Korea, Chinese, Taipei, Australia and New Zealand. In Division B are: Hong Kong, Jordan, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Philippines, Samoa and Thailand.
  • Division A will be held at Kanteerva Indoor Stadium and Division B at Koramangala Indoor Stadium. The first four teams from the championship will qualify for the FIBA U-19 Women's World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in Madrid, Spain, in July 2023.

Para World Cup: Rahul Shoots Down Gold

  • Rahul Jakhar held his nerves to emerge victorious in a shoot-off as India opened their campaign at the World Shooting Para Sport World Cup on a resounding note by clinching three medals.
  • Jakhar, who qualified in the second spot, held off a determined Kim Jungam in the shoot-off to win the P3 mixed 25m pistol SH1 final. Trailing Jungam throughout the final, the 36-year-old Indian kept his calm to equal the scores 20-all in the last series of the elimination round.
  • Paralympics champion Avani Lekhara won silver in the R2 women's 10m air riflestanding SH1 event.

Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Dedicates Hooghly Cochin Shipyard Limited to Nation

  • Union Minister for Shipping, Ports and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal dedicated the state-of-the-art shipbuilding facility 'Hooghly Cochin Shipyard' at Nazirganj in Howrah to the nation. Cochin Shipyard's new shipbuilding facility in the state became operational. He expressed satisfaction that such a state-of-the-art shipbuilding centre was established on the banks of the Hooghly River in Kolkata. The minister said that this centre will fulfil the requirement of high technology, environment friendly watercraft for the development of national waterways as well as inland water transport. Northeast states will also benefit from water transport connectivity.
  • The yard will not only enable economic development in the immediate area, but also direct and indirect employment as well as development of MSMEs and ancillary industries.

Goa Becomes 1st Har Ghar Jal Certified State

  • Goa became the first Har Ghar Jal certified state and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu are the first Union Territories in the country. In this state and UT, people from all the villages have declared their village as Har Ghar Jal through a resolution passed by the Gram Sabha. All two lakh 63 thousand rural households of Goa and over 85 thousand of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu have access to safe drinking water through tap connection.
  • The country-wide mission rolled out by the government in August 2019 has a 2024 deadline. After a delay caused by the pandemic, the scheme has now achieved 52% coverage.

Minister of Fisheries, Parshottam Rupala launches 'Aqua Bazar' App

  • National Fisheries Development Board (NPFB) conducted its 9th governing body meeting in New Delhi. The governing body meeting was chaired by Minister of Fisheries Parshottam Rupala. Minister of State for Fisheries L. Murugan and Sanjeev Kumar Balyan also attended the meeting.
  • On this occasion, Parshottam Rupala released a book on Super Success Stories from Indian Fisheries. He also launched an online marketplace feature - 'Aqua Bazar' app. The app would help the fish farmers and stakeholders to source the inputs such as fish seed, feed and medicines and services required for fish culture. It would connect various stakeholders involved in aquaculture sector.

  • Hindustan Aeronautics Limited signed an MoU for establishing an office in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).
  • The office in Malaysia will help HAL in tapping the new business opportunities for Fighter Lead-in Trainer (FLIT) LCA and other requirements of Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) like Su-30 MKM and Hawk upgrades.

Mastercard Signs Badminton Players to Promote Digital Payments in India

  • Mastercard partnered with Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty and appointed them as brand ambassadors in India. As winners of the Thomas Cup 2022 and Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, the new ambassadors will partner with Mastercard to spread awareness about the safety, security, and convenience of digital payments in India. This partnership is in line with the efforts of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Prime Minister Modi's vision of Digital India.

Tamil scholar, orator Nellai Kannan Passes Away

  • Tamil scholar and orator Nellai Kannan passed away at his residence in Tirunelveli. He was 77.
  • Born in January 1945, Kannan was widely called 'Tamil Kadal' in literary circles for having a vast and deep (like the ocean or 'Kadal') knowledge about a range of topics and exemplary oratorical skills in Tamil. He gave discourses on spirituality and Tamil literature among others. Kannan was a member of the Indian National Congress and appeared as a moderator in many public debate shows.
  • He contested against the late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK leader M Karunanidhi at Chepauk in the 1996 Assembly elections and came second. After leaving the Congress, Kannan actively campaigned for AIADMK in 2006.

  • The birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi is observed every year as Sadbhavana Diwas, which literary means Harmony Day, on August 20. The day is observed to encourage peace, national integrity and communal harmony among all religions in the country.
  • He was the youngest Prime Minister of the country. He became Prime Minister at the age of 40. After the assassination of Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi became the Prime Minister. He had served from 1984-89.
  • In 1992, the Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana award was instituted by the All India Congress Committee of the Indian National Congress in memory of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Tamil Nadu Governor R. N. Ravi Appoints VC to State-run Universities

  • Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi, who is also the Chancellor of state-run universities, appointed Vice-Chancellors to three government universities.
  • The Tamil Nadu Governor appointed T. Arumugam as Vice-Chancellor of Vellore-based Thiruvalluvar University. Mr. Ravi and N. Chandrasekar were appointed as Vice-Chancellors of Alagappa and Manonmaniam Sundaranar Universities respectively. Alagappa University and Mananmaniam Sundaranar University are in Karaikudi and Tirunelveli respectively.
  • The appointments are for a period of three years with effect from the date of assumption of office by the appointees.
