Bangladesh, World's No. 2 Clothes Exporter, Sees Order Drop

  • Bangladesh's garment industry, the world's No. 2 exporter after China, is facing a double whammy from slowing global demand and an energy crisis at home that's threatening to thwart the nation's pandemic recovery.
  • Waning orders are a risk to the economy, where the garment industry makes up more than 10% of gross domestic product and employs 4.4 million people. It couldn't be happening at a worse time for Bangladesh as authorities are resorting to productivity-killing power cuts to preserve fuel reserves amid a region-wide energy crisis, caused in part by the war in Ukraine.

Indian Oil, NTCA sign MoU for Transcontinental Relocation of 'Cheetah'

  • The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Indian Oil Corporation for the trans-continental relocation of cheetahs from Africa to India. The IOC would contribute Rs. 50.22 crore over four years for the project. The total cost of the project is currently Rs. 75 crore.
  • The funds provided by Indian Oil as a part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) would be used for cheetah reintroduction as well as its habitat management and protection, ecology development, staff training and veterinary healthcare.

BharatPe Founder Bhavik Koladiya Quits, Months after Ashneer Grover's Exit

  • BharatPe's founder Bhavik Koladiya resigned from his position at the unicorn fintech company.
  • The development came a few months after another co-founder and managing director Ashneer Grover's exit, following weeks of dispute between him and the management on alleged misappropriation of funds.
  • His (Koladiya's) contract tenure ended on July 31, 2022, and he expressed his desire to spend time on other assignments outside BharatPe.
  • BharatPe said Koladiya had been associated with it as an independent consultant, guiding the firm's product and technology teams.

Private Banks Reported most Data Breaches in 2018-22

  • As per reports, private banks reported the most data breaches between June 2018 and March 2022 in attacks that stole business and personal information, said a minister on Tuesday.
  • All banks reported 248 data breaches in the four-year period, Minister of State for Finance Bhagwat Karad told Rajya Sabha. Of those attacks, 205 were in private banks and 41 in state-owned. The remaining two were at foreign banks.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has a Cyber Security Framework for Scheduled Commercial Banks, which requires banks to implement cyber/IT (Information technology) controls to prevent data leakage.

SIDBI Partners with SVC Bank for Empowering MSMEs

  • SVC Co-operative Bank Ltd and Small Industries Development Bank in India (SIDBI) announced that they entered into a partnership.
  • The agreement was signed by Ashish Singhal, MD, SVC Bank and Sanjeev Gupta, GM, SIDBI in Mumbai. As per the agreement, SIDBI will extend refinance facility to SVC Bank to facilitate an improved flow of credit to MSMEs.
  • As the principal financial institution for promotion, financing and development of the MSME sector as well as coordinator of functions of institutions engaged in similar activities, SIDBI recently decided to extend refinance assistance to eligible scheduled Urban Co-operative Banks (UCBs) and Regional Rural Banks (RRBs).

Commonwealth Games 2022: Indian Team Bags Gold in Lawn Bowl

  • India's lawn bowls women's fours team made history by winning the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022. This was the country's first medal in the lawn bowls event and the team, made of skipper Rupa Rani Tirkey, Lovely Choubey, Pinki and Nayanmoni Saikia, ended up winning the title after beating 2018 silver medallists South Africa. The Indian team won against South Africa with a 17-10 victory.

CWG 2022, Table Tennis: Indian Men's Team Beats Singapore; Clinches Gold

  • A clinical India beat Singapore 3-1 in the final of the Commonwealth Games 2022 men's team table tennis event to clinch the gold medal at the National Exhibition Centre.
  • With this, India team defended their title as it had also won the gold in 2018 at Gold Coast CWG with 3-1 win over Nigeria in the final.

Hardeep Singh Puri Inaugurates 4th ONGC Para Games

  • The fourth edition of the ONGC Para Games was officially launched in New Delhi's Thyagaraj Sports Complex by Union Minister of Petroleum, Natural Gas, Housing, and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri. The 4th ONGC Para Games were held by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) from August 2-4, 2022, and featured 275 Persons with Disabilities (PwD) who work for eight central oil and gas public organisations.
  • The Paralympic Committee of India has assisted ONGC in organising the Para Games on an international scale since their first edition in 2017.

India, Maldives Ink Six Agreements to Broad-base Ties in Key Areas

  • India and Maldives inked six agreements to expand cooperation in several key areas with Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserting that New Delhi has been and would continue to be the "first responder" to any need or crisis facing the island nation. After wide-ranging talks with visiting Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Modi announced a Line of Credit of USD 100 million (one million = 10 lakh) for the neighbouring country for the completion of development projects in a time-bound manner.
  • The six pacts inked between the two sides will facilitate cooperation in capacity building, cyber security, housing, disaster management and infrastructure development in the Maldives.

Assam CM Launches Digital Issuance of Caste Certificates for Students

  • Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched 'Mission Bhumiputra', a digital way to issue digitalised caste certificates to students.
  • The Chief Minister inaugurated a Bhumiputra Portal at a programme held at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra.
  • Implemented by the Departments of Tribal Affairs (Plain) and Social Justice Empowerment, the mission was implemented to carry forward the government's mission of easy public service to the public.

Suresh N. Patel Sworn in as Central Vigilance Commissioner

  • Vigilance Commissioner Suresh N. Patel was appointed as the Central Vigilance Commissioner, a year after the post fell vacant.
  • Patel, who has been working as the acting Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) since June 2022, was sworn in as the chief of the probity watchdog Central Vigilance Commission by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  • The ceremony was also attended by the prime minister and Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu.
  • Patel, former managing director and chief executive officer of Andhra Bank, was in April 2020 appointed as the Vigilance Commissioner.

Japan, US, and South Korea Participate in Missile Defence Drill

  • South Korea, the US and Japan kicked off a combined ballistic missile defence exercise in waters off Hawaii, amid their stepped-up security coordination against North Korea's evolving military threats.
  • The biennial Pacific Dragon exercise is taking place from August 1 to 14. In addition to the three countries, Australia and Canada also joined the exercise in 2022's edition.
  • The exercise was arranged as the defence chiefs of South Korea, the US and Japan agreed to reinforce their security coordination during their trilateral gathering on the margins of the annual Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on June 11.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to the designer of the Indian National flag, Pingali Venkayya on his birth anniversary.
  • The Prime Minister said that the nation will forever be indebted to him for his efforts in giving citizens of the country 'the Tricolour'.
  • To mark the birth anniversary of Pingali Venkayya, the designer of India's national flag, the Central government released a special commemorative postage stamp.
  • Born near Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh) on August 2, 1876, Pingali had designed many models of the national flag. In 1921, Mahatma Gandhi approved a design during the Indian National Congress meeting in Vijayawada. The national flag that we see today was based upon his design.

Telangana to Launch Insurance Scheme to Support Bereaved Weavers' Families

  • Aiming to provide financial support to the bereaved families of handloom and power loom weavers in Telangana, the state government would launch the 'Nethana Beema' scheme on August 7.
  • Telangana government is implementing various welfare schemes to uplift the weaver's community in the state.
  • The families of the deceased weaver will receive an amount of Rs. 5 lakh under the scheme.
  • The Department of Handlooms and Textiles of the state government will be the nodal agency for the implementation of this scheme.

Lok Sabha passes Wild Life (Protection) Amendment Bill, 2021

  • The Wild Life (Protection) Amendment Bill, 2021 was passed by Lok Sabha. The bill, first introduced in Lok Sabha by the Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change on December 17, 2021, amends the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.
  • The bill aims to implement the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora and expand the number of species protected by the convention. CITES is a convention that requires countries to regulate the trade of all listed specimens through permits and regulate the possession of live animal specimens so it does not threaten the survival of the species.

In a First, IIT-B Alumnus to Head Institute's Board of Governors

  • An IIT-Bombay alumnus was appointed as the Chairperson of the institute's Board of Governors (BoG). Dr. Sharad Kumar Saraf, an alumnus of IIT-B, Electrical Engineering, 1969 batch, has been a member of the IIT-B BoG for the past four years. He is also serving as the Chairperson of the BoG at IIT-Jammu.
  • Saraf is currently the Chairman and Managing Director of Technocraft Industries India Ltd., which he co-founded in 1972 with his brother Sudarshan, another IIT-B alumnus.
  • He succeeded Dr. Pawan Goenka, Chairperson of INSPACe – Department of Space, Government of India.

Gujarat Govt. Announces 589 Vocational Schools to Offer 13 New Skills

  • The Gujarat education department announced 589 new government and grant-in-aid secondary and higher secondary vocational schools that will offer 13 new vocational skills to students. These schools are expected to start admissions in September-October this year.
  • Aimed at increasing professional knowledge among students and opportunities towards vocational skills, these new 589 schools, majorly in Gujarati medium, were approved by Government of India's Samagra Shiksha under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
  • The 13 new vocational trades include agriculture, apparel, made ups and home furnishings, automotive, beauty and wellness, BFSI, electronics, food processing, IT/ITES, plumber, retail, sports, physical education, fitness and leisure, tourism and hospitality and health care.

Mamallapuram to Host Tamil Nadu International Kite Festival

  • The maiden edition of Tamil Nadu Kite Festival is set to see custom kites, brought in by professionals from USA, Thailand, Malaysia and India, take flight, at Mamallapuram.
  • At the first edition of the Tamil Nadu International Kite Festival, hundreds of vibrant kites in myriad shapes and sizes will dot the sky. The event will take place at the sun-drenched, sea-kissed TTDC Ocean View, spread across 14 acres. This gives the organisers enough space to mark out dedicated zones for the different segments of the event.

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik released a book titled 'Lockdown Lyrics', a collection of poems written by Sanjukta Dash. The poems are an unadulterated narration of the author's experiences and exasperations during the pandemic. She has reflected all the trauma & tribulations and hope and aspirations of humanity during this most critical journey of society in a long time.
  • Sanjukta Dash is a well-known name in Odia literature. She has three anthologies of poetries in Odia- Antaswar, Amrut Anwesha and Apekshare Ebe Bi. Lockdown Lyrics is her debut endeavour in English literature published by Authors Press New Delhi.

'No Need to Resign from Job to Enrol as Lawyers,' Bar Council of India Tells SC

  • Law graduates employed in other professions need not resign from their respective jobs to get enrolled as lawyers, the Bar Council of India (BCI) informed the Supreme Court, adding that such people will be provided a six-month window to quit their jobs after clearing the enrolment examination.
  • The decision was taken by the BCI's general council, and conveyed to the court through an affidavit, in a matter where the top court is considering a slew of reforms in the enrolment process.
  • The apex court was hearing an appeal filed by BCI against a November 2020 decision by the Gujarat High Court that allowed a single mother to take the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) while continuing her job.
