With $87 billion, India Top Remittance Recipient in 2021: UN Report

  • India received 87 billion dollars in remittances in 2021, the top remittance recipient, and way ahead of countries like China and Mexico, according to a World Health Organisation report.
  • The United States was the largest source country for remittances in 2020, followed by the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Switzerland. Remittances increase or maintain consumer spending and soften the blow of economic hardship, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ranil Wickremesinghe Elected Sri Lanka President

  • Six-time Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was elected as crisis-wracked Sri Lanka's new President by the country's parliament, with the backing of the party of the ex-leader — who fled abroad after his palace was stormed by protesters. Official results showed Wickremesinghe polled 134 votes in a three-cornered parliamentary vote, with his main opponent Dullas Alahapperuma getting 82 and leftist Anura Dissanayake just 3, giving him an absolute majority.
  • Wickremesinghe took charge of a bankrupt nation that is in bailout talks with the IMF, with its 22 million people enduring severe shortages of food, fuel and medicine.

India Signs MoU with Namibia for Reintroduction of Extinct Cheetahs

  • India and Namibia signed a crucial memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the reintroduction of cheetahs, declared extinct in the country in 1952.
  • As per reports, the first batch comprising four male and four female cheetahs will arrive from Namibia in August.
  • The fastest land animal in the world would find a new home in the Kuno-Palpur National Park (KNP) in Madhya Pradesh's Sheopur district.

SBI Launches WhatsApp Banking Service

  • In a move to make banking easier for its customers, India's largest public sector lender, State Bank of India or SBI launched its WhatsApp Banking services. SBI customers can avail certain banking services from the lender using WhatsApp, which may come in handy for many as they do not have to download the app or go to the ATM anymore. This came days after SBI Chairman Dinesh Khara had revealed plans of the bank going the WhatsApp way.

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Becomes First 100% Landlord Major Port of India

  • Jawaharlal Nehru Port became the first 100 per cent Landlord Major Port of India having all berths being operated on PPP model.
  • Expressing his views on the achievement, Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that this project would improve the utilisation in crane and berth productivity of the terminal. He also said that the total handling of JNPT would increase to 1.8 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) from the present handling capacity of 1.5 million TEUs in 2020-21.
  • The terminal would also be handling Ro-Ro vessels which would not only lower the logistics cost and reduce transit time but will also contribute in reducing congestion on roads and promoting towards clean environment.

Gautam Adani World's 4th Richest on Forbes List

  • India's richest person Gautam Adani became the world's fourth richest person, toppling Microsoft founder Bill Gates, as per the Forbes world's richest list. Gautam Adani's position got upped by one rank as Gates said that he would be donating $20 billion of his wealth to his non-profit organisation — Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Following this, Gautam Adani and Family took over Gates' spot with their wealth of $115 billion, as per Forbes.

Former Supreme Court judge Vineet Saran Appointed BCCI Ethics Officer

  • Former Supreme Court judge Vineet Saran took over as the BCCI's ethics officer and ombudsman, filling the dual posts lying vacant for a year.
  • Saran succeeded Justice (Retd) D. K. Jain, whose term ended in June 2021.
  • Saran is a former Chief Justice of Odisha High Court, and also served as a judge in Karnataka and Allahabad High Court.

Asian Games Delayed by 12 Months to Avoid Conflict with other Sporting Events

  • China will host the 2022 Asian Games in autumn 2023, after postponing the event in Hangzhou because of Covid-19.
  • The Games were originally scheduled for September this year, but organisers postponed them in May as China tried to stamp out a large Covid resurgence in several parts of the country.
  • The event will now be held in Hangzhou from September 23 to October 8 2023, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) said.
  • Hangzhou lies less than 200 kilometres (120 miles) from the country's biggest city Shanghai, which endured a months-long lockdown earlier this year as part of the ruling Communist Party's zero-tolerance approach to the virus.

West Indies Batter Lendl Simmons Announces Retirement from International Cricket

  • West Indies batter Lendl Simmons announced his retirement from international cricket.
  • The right-hand batter from Trinidad made his debut for the West Indies in 2006, and went on to play 136 One-Day and Twenty20 international matches. Simmons was a part of West Indies' T20 World Cup winning sides in 2012 and 2016.
  • His last appearance for the team came during the T20 World Cup in the UAE in October 2021.
  • Simmons averaged 31.58 in the 50-over format, and 26.78 in T20Is. His figure in Tests is an unimpressive 17.37.

SC Paves Way for OBC Reservation in Maharashtra Local Bodies Poll

  • More than a year after it read down Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation in local bodies, the Supreme Court paved the way for OBC reservation in Maharashtra local bodies poll, as it accepted the Banthia Commission report.
  • A bench headed by Justice A.M. Khanwilkar directed the State Election Commission and state authorities to ensure the election process in respect to each of those local bodies is immediately commenced.
  • The apex court also directed the Maharashtra SEC to notify the election programme for all local bodies within two weeks. Accepting reservations for OBCs, the top court said that it wants election to be conducted and these cannot be deferred indefinitely.

National Standards for Civil Service Training Institutions

  • Union government unveiled the "National Standards for Civil Service Training Institutions (NSCSTI)", with the aim of raising their quality and capacity.
  • NSCSTI was launched at the headquarters of Capacity Building Commission.
  • With this, India became the world's first country to launch a unique model for creating a national level standard for civil service training institutions.
  • A web portal and approach paper for national standards were also unveiled, during the launch event.
  • Capacity Building Commission develops the national standards to - formulate a baseline for central training institutes on their current capacity, to elevate quality and capacity of training delivery and to harmonise standards for training.
  • These standards would also lay down aspirations for training institutions, to endeavour towards excellence.
  • Capacity Building Commission was created as a part of Mission Karmayogi for civil servants. The commission comprises of experts in related fields and global professionals. It will help in preparing and monitoring annual capacity building plans as well as audit human resources present in the government.

HP First State in Country to Connect all Registered Commercial Vehicles Equipped with VLTD with ERSS

  • Himachal Pradesh became the first state in the country to connect all registered commercial vehicles equipped with Vehicle Location Tracking Device (VLTD) with Emergency Response Support System (ERSS). Now these vehicles can be tracked anywhere in the country through VLTD. More than 9,423 vehicles were registered and linked with ERSS. Now, these vehicles would be monitored by both the police and the transport department.
  • Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur formally inaugurated the system at a program organised at Peterhof, in Shimla. He also introduced the facility of panic button for the safety of women and children in public vehicles.

Air Commodore Shrivastava Takes over as 3BRD Chief

  • Air Commodore Rajeev Shrivastava took over as the Air Officer Commanding, No. 3 Base Repair Depot (3BRD) at Chandigarh.
  • Commissioned in the Aeronautical Engineering Branch of the IAF in March 1991, he has held numerous important field and staff appointments that include Commanding Officer of No.2 Tettra School, Chief of Aircraft at 3BRD and Chief Engineering Officer at Air Force Station, Mumbai.
  • He has served with the United Nations Mission in Congo from 2004-2005.
  • An alumnus of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and College of Defence Management, Hyderabad, he has been awarded the Chief of the Air Staff Commendation twice.

Govt. Gives 'In-principle Approval' for 10 pc Quota for Agniveers in CAPFs

  • The government gave "in-principle approval" for 10 per cent reservation in the Central Armed Police Forces like the CRPF and BSF for 'Agniveers' after their service in the military, Rajya Sabha was informed.
  • Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai also said that a whopping 30.41 lakh candidates appeared against 60,210 posts of constables in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs).

Assam CM Launches Scheme for Welfare of Native Weavers

  • Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched 'Swanirbhar Naari', a scheme to empower indigenous weavers in Assam's Guwahati.
  • Under the 'Swanirbhar Naari' scheme, the state government would procure handloom items directly from the indigenous weavers via a web portal.
  • As per Sarma, the scheme would help preserve the heritage of handlooms and textiles.

CUET PHASE-1 Records 76% Attendance; Maximum Students from UP, Bihar

  • The first phase of the Common University Entrance Test for undergraduate admissions or CUET-UG, which was concluded, recorded 76.4% attendance.
  • The exam is being conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in two phases — phase 1 in July and phase 2 in August. The second phase will begin from August 4 and will continue until August 20. The NTA will issue admit cards for the second phase on July 31.
  • According to the NTA data, of the 2,50,495 candidates allotted slots in phase one, 1,91,586 appeared in the exam. Of them, maximum candidates were from Uttar Pradesh (49,915), followed by Bihar (20,840), Madhya Pradesh (19,032), Delhi (16,885) and Rajasthan (14,982).
  • In terms of day-wise data of four days on which the exam was conducted in phase one –July 15, 16, 19 and 20– maximum attendance was recorded on day third, i.e. 79% and minimum on day one, i.e. 72.9%.

  • Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami released the book "Beyond The Misty Veil", Temple Tales of Uttarakhand written by Aradhana Johri (Senior IAS) on the temples of Uttarakhand. This book will be known as an authentic introduction to the divine temples of Uttarakhand in the country and abroad. Former IAS officer Aradhana Johri had served earlier as the District Magistrate of Nainital.
  • The book based on the mythological temples of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand informs us about our culture and mythology. Apart from Chardham, religious tourism should also be promoted. The book talks about the temples of Uttarakhand, their significance and the tales associated with them. This will connect the main temples coming in different areas of the state and will promote religious tourism by developing them in the form of circuits.

Collegium's Nod to Elevation of 21 Judicial Officers

  • The Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice N.V. Ramana approved the proposal for the elevation of 21 Judicial Officers as Judges in the different High Courts. The Collegium approved the proposal for the elevation of seven Judicial Officers as Judges in the Andhra Pradesh High Court. The Collegium also approved the proposal for the elevation of nine Judicial Officers as Judges in the Allahabad High Court.
