India is projected to surpass China as the world's most populous country next year, according to a report by the United Nations.
The World Population Prospects 2022 by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division, said that the global population is projected to reach eight billion on November 15, 2022.
The latest projections by the United Nations suggest that the world's population could grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030 and 9.7 billion in 2050.
It is projected to reach a peak of around 10.4 billion people during the 2080s and to remain at that level until 2100.
Zelensky Sacks Ukraine's Ambassadors to India, Four other Countries
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed several of Kyiv's senior envoys abroad, including India's, according to the presidential website.
In a decree that gave no reason for the move, he announced the sacking of Ukraine's ambassadors to India, Germany, Czech Republic, Norway and Hungary.
Kyiv's relations with Germany, which is heavily reliant on Russian energy supplies and also Europe's biggest economy, are particularly sensitive.

Tumuluru joins CoinSwitch from Myntra where he was vice president of engineering. With over two decades of experience, he has built cloud, Big data and infrastructure platforms at tech companies in India and the US.

Panel on GST Appellate Tribunal Formed
The GST Council set up a Group of Ministers, chaired by Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala, to suggest required changes in the law for setting up the GST Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT).
The GST Council, chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and comprising state ministers, had ecided to constitute a Group of Ministers (GoM) to address various concerns raised by states in relation to constitution of the GSTAT.
As per the Terms of Reference (ToR) of the GoM, the panel would recommend required amendments in the GST law to ensure that the legal provisions maintain the right federal balance and are in line with the overall objective of uniform taxation within the country.
Maharashtra Leads States with 13,541 Govt-recognised Start-ups: DPIIT Data
Maharashtra has the maximum number of government-recognised start-ups, followed by Karnataka and Delhi, data shared by the industry department showed.
As many as 13,541 active Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) recognised start-ups were from Maharashtra, out of the total 73,205 such government-approved new age companies in the country. This means Maharashtra has a share of 18 per cent with respect to the total number of start-ups.
Karnataka with 8,902 start-ups was followed by Delhi with 8,670 enterprises as of July 2022.
These start-ups have created more than 750,000 jobs with an average of 11 jobs per enterprise, the data showed.
City Union Bank, Shriram General Insurance Sign Corporate Agency Agreement
Private sector lender City Union Bank (CUB) signed a corporate agency agreement with Shriram General Insurance to distribute the latter's insurance products through its network of branches across the country. Under the agreement, Shriram General Insurance will offer personal lines of insurance products such as motor, accident, home and travel insurance along with commercial lines of insurance products such as property, marine and engineering insurance to the bank's customers.
Shriram General Insurance Company is a joint venture between Shriram Capital, the holding company for the financial services business of the Shriram Group, and Sanlam Limited (headquartered in South Africa), a leading pan-African financial services group.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel announced that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) agreed to host the 36th National Games in the state. This will be the first time the state will host the prestigious games, scheduled to take place between September 27 and October 10, 2022.
The 36th National Games were to be organised in Goa in May 2020, but they were postponed indefinitely due to the spread of Covid-19.
The various sporting events will be spread across the state covering six cities of Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot and Bhavnagar.

Jagan Mohan Reddy Elected Lifetime President of YSR Congress
Chief Minister and national president of YSR Congress Party, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy was unanimously elected as lifetime president of the YSR Congress Party.
The process was completed on the concluding day of the YSRC's two-day plenary, after the party constitution was amended to enable Jagan's election as president for lifetime.
Jagan established the YSRC in March 2011 after quitting the Congress. Ever since, he has been continuing as the party president.

The Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) Vikrant successfully completed the fourth phase of sea trials during which trials of the majority of equipment and systems onboard were undertaken. The trials took place ahead of its scheduled commissioning into the Indian Navy on August 15.
Designed by the Indian Navy's Directorate of Naval Design (DND), Vikrant has been built at the state-owned Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL). The warship, with a displacement of 37,500 tonnes, Vikrant has put India in a select league -- only the US, the UK, Russia, France and China have the capability to build aircraft carriers.
Russian Navy Receives First Submarine Carrying Nuke-powered Drones
The Russian navy received the first submarine Belgorod which is designed to carry Poseidon nuclear-powered underwater drones.
The submarine opens new opportunities for Russia to implement various scientific research tasks and conduct rescue operations in remote areas of the oceans.
The nuclear-powered Belgorod was floated out in April 2019 and was initially planned to be delivered to the navy in 2020.
China, Pakistan Begin War Games off Shanghai
China and Pakistan began four-day naval exercises off the coast of Shanghai, involving Pakistan's most advanced China-built frigate and paving the way for closer security cooperation between the two countries in the Indian Ocean.
The drills were aimed at jointly dealing with maritime security threats.
The exercises are the second edition of Sea Guardians, following drills held in January 2020 in the Arabian Sea off Karachi.

Punjab Technical University Gets B in First-ever NAAC Grading
Punjab's first technical university found itself in a piquant situation with National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) awarding it grade B in its first-ever inspection for the assessment of the 'quality status' even as several colleges affiliated with it secured A+ or A grade. To put things in perspective, A+ equals rank 2 in the NAAC in the eight-grade NAAC rating in which the IK Gujral Punjab Technical University (IKGPTU) was at rank 6.
The NAAC, an autonomous body under the University Grants Commission (UGC), assesses and accredits institutes of higher education. The highest grade it awards is A++ followed by A+, A, B++, B+, B, C, and D.
The NAAC found the 25-year-old state-run university lagging in "research, innovations, and extension". The PTU, as it is popularly known, has applied for a review.

Sannati: Ancient Buddhist Site Finally in Focus after 20 Years
Left almost unattended to for 20 years after it came to light through the excavation by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) between 1994 and 2001, the ancient Buddhist site on the bank of Bhima River near Kanaganahalli (forming part of Sannati site) in Kalaburagi district, Karnataka finally got some attention.
The ASI has now come up with a plan for the conservation of the site at a cost of Rs. 3.5 crore and work has just begun. ASI Regional Director (South) D. Maheshwari and Circle Superintendent (Hampi) Nikhil Das are camping at the site monitoring work.
The conservation project taken up now envisages the resetting of the remains of Maha Stupa retrieved in the excavation to their original positions without much ornamentation and reconstructing of fallen portions of the Ayaka platforms using newly-fabricated bricks of the same size, shape and texture.

The book is a part of the "Swadhinta Ka Amrit Mahotsav" to mark the 75th year of the country's Independence.
Ashoke Kumar Chakraborty Named Additional Solicitor General for Calcutta HC
Veteran counsel Ashoke Kumar Chakraborty was appointed as the Additional Solicitor General for the Calcutta High Court.
The appointment was announced by Department of Legal Affairs under the Union Law and Justice Ministry.
The post was lying vacant for three months following the sudden resignation of senior counsel Y.J. Dastoor in April 2022. For the last three months, the responsibility was handled jointly by senior counsel Billwadal Bhattacharya and Dhiraj Trivedi.
Supreme Court: Recommends Separate Act to Streamline Grant of Bail and Sets Timeline for Disposal of Bail Pleas
The Union Government of India was recommended by the Supreme Court to introduce a special enactment in the nature of a "Bail Act" to streamline the grant of bail.
A bench comprising of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice M.M. Sundresh while hearing the matter in the case Satender Kumar Antil versus Central Bureau of Investigation observed that "The Union of India may consider the introduction of a separate enactment in nature of a bail act, so as to streamline the grant of bails".
A slew of directions were also issued by the bench to ensure compliance of proper procedure for arrest and setting time limit for disposal of bail pleas.
Abu Salem Case: Supreme Court Tells Centre to Honour Promise Made to Portugal
The Supreme Court ordered the Central Government to honour the commitment given by it to the Portuguese Government and ordered release of gangster Abu Salem on his completing his 25-year sentence in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.
India had guaranteed Portugal that the Abu Salem would not be sentenced beyond 25 years while requesting his extradition in 2002.
The bench of Justices S.K. Kaul and M.M. Sundresh said that the Central government should come forward and advise the President of India to exercise his power under Article 72 of the Constitution and the national commitment on completion of his sentence.
