7th Japan-India ICT Joint Working Group meeting held under India-Japan ICT Comprehensive Cooperation Framework

  • The 7th Japan-India ICT Joint Working Group meeting was held on a virtual platform. Recalling the India Japan Summit Meeting in March 2022, both sides recognized the need for growing cooperation under the India-Japan Digital Partnership with a view to enhancing digital economy through promotion of joint projects for digital transformation, support to provide opportunities for Indian IT professionals to work in Japan and Japanese companies, and collaboration made in the area of IoT, AI and other emerging technologies. 
    • India and Japan share a common vision of a peaceful, stable and prosperous world and this has now taken the shape of "Special Strategic and Global Partnership". 

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan appointed President of UAE

  • Rulers in the United Arab Emirates announced that they unanimously appointed Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as the President of the nation. Rulers of the country's seven sheikhdoms made the decision at a meeting held in Al Mushrif Palace in Abu Dhabi. It comes after the late President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan died. The transition of power marks only the third time this U.S.-allied nation of seven sheikhdoms selected a President since becoming an independent nation in 1971.
    • The last, which saw Sheikh Khalifa take over for both his and Sheikh Mohammed's father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, came a month after his death in 2004. The speed of announcement appeared designed to show unity and reassure the world of the stability of this crucial oil-and-gas producing nation that hosts Western military forces.

RBI Appoints Sitikantha Pattanaik, Rajiv Ranjan as Executive Directors

  • The Reserve Bank appointed Sitikantha Pattanaik and Rajiv Ranjan as executive directors. Ranjan will also serve as an ex-officio member of the rate-setting panel Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). Prior to being promoted as ED, Pattanaik was an Adviser in the Department of Economic and Policy Research (DEPR), while Ranjan was serving as Adviser-in-Charge of Monetary Policy Department and Secretary to the MPC.
    • As Executive Director (ED), Pattanaik will look after the Department of Economic and Policy Research, while Ranjan will take care of the Monetary Policy Department.

RBI Restricts Withdrawals from Shankarrao Pujari Nutan Nagari Sahakari Bank

  • The RBI imposed several restrictions on Shankarrao Pujari Nutan Nagari Sahakari Bank Limited, Ichalkaranji, Kolhapur, including on withdrawals, in view of the lender's worsening financial position. However, 99.84 per cent of the depositors are fully covered by the DICGC insurance scheme. Under the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) insurance scheme, deposits of up to Rs 5 lakh are insured.
    • The restrictions will remain in force for a period of six months and are subject to review. The bank cannot, without prior approval of RBI, grant or renew any loans and advances, make any investment, incur any liability, and dispose of any of its properties or assets, among other restrictions.
    • The bank will continue to undertake banking business with restrictions as stated in the Directions till its financial position improves.

Union Bank Launches Trade-Nxt Platform for Cross Border Trade Transaction

  • The Union Bank of India (UBI) launched an online platform, 'Trade nxt', which enables corporate, and MSMEs (Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises) to transact all cross-border export-import transactions from the comfort of their place, i.e. eliminates the need for companies to visit a bank branch for the same. It offers seamless entry and processing of letters of credit (LC), bank guarantees, export/import bills, disbursement of export credit, outward & inward remittances, dealer financing etc.
    • 'Trade nxt' platform will also enable the regulatory online auto reporting through Import Data Processing & Monitoring System (IDPMS), Export Data processing & Monitoring System (EDPMS) and other statutory reporting to Overseas Direct Investment (ODI)/ Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)/ Liberalised Remittance Scheme LRS) which will make the process much more convenient.

Scientists discover almost 35 million years old rare snake fossil from Ladakh

  • Scientists have discovered the fossil of a Madtsoiidae snake in the Himalayan mountains in Ladakh, which sheds fresh light on the prevalence and existence of this rare serpent species in the Indian subcontinent. Madtsoiidae is an extinct group of medium-sized to gigantic snakes, firstly appeared during the later part of the Cretaceous period, that began 145 million years ago and ended 66 million years ago. They are thought to grow up to 30 feet in length.
  • Madtsoiidae were mostly found in the Gondwanan landmasses, an ancient supercontinent that broke up about 180 million years ago and eventually split into landmasses that are today known as Africa, South America, Australia, Antarctica, the Indian subcontinent and the Arabian Peninsula.
    • The study was undertaken by researchers from the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun, Panjab University, Chandigarh, Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar and Comenius University, Slovakia. The newly discovered specimen has been housed in the repository of Wadia Institute.

Lionel Messi topped Forbes' highest-paid athletes list for 2022

  • Lionel Messi topped the list of Forbes Highest-Paid Athletes 2022 with a reported income of $130 million, followed by Basketball player, Lebron James with $121.2 million while Cristiano Ronaldo was third with $115 million.
  • Messi had moved from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain in August 2021 and Cristiano Ronaldo rejoined Manchester United from Juventus in the same month. Forbes calculates the estimates based on prize money, salaries and bonuses, and sponsorship deals.

Italian Cup 2022: Inter Milan Beat Juventus

  • Inter Milan defeated Juventus 4-2 after extra time in the Italian Cup final. Ivan Perisic scored twice in extra time after Hakan Çalhanoglu had converted a controversial late penalty. Nicolò Barella scored the other goal for Inter. The Italian Cup final soccer match between Juventus and Inter Milan was held at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy.
    • Hakan Calhanoglu stepped up from the penalty spot with 80 minutes on the clock to force extra time before another spot-kick was converted by Ivan Perisic to put the Nerazzurri within touching distance of the trophy.

Hardeep Singh Puri Launched Bharat Tap Initiative & Nirmal Jal Prayas On The Inaugural Day Of PLUMBEX India

  • The Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs & Petroleum and Natural Gas, Shri Hardeep Singh Puri launched the BHARAT TAP initiative at the 'Plumbex India' exhibition. This exhibition is aimed for products and services related to the plumbing, water and sanitation industry.
    • Shri Puri said that this exhibition caters to a fundamental service in the development of the nation – water and sanitation and there is no progress or growth without adequate sanitation, which is foundational in the hierarchy of basic services that citizens expect.
    • Shri Puri also launched NARDECO MAHI's 'Nirmal Jal Prayas' initiative which will work for saving of 500 crore litres of water per year.

NITI Aayog Launches The National Data & Analytics Platform

  • NITI Aayog launched the National Data & Analytics Platform (NDAP) for open public use . The platform aims to democratize access to public government data by making data accessible, interoperable, interactive, and available on a user-friendly platform. It hosts foundational datasets from various government agencies, presents them coherently, and provides tools for analytics and visualization. This public launch follows a beta release of the platform in August 2021 that had provided access to a limited number of users for testing and feedback.
    • NDAP follows a use-case based approach to ensure that the datasets hosted on the platform are tailored to the needs of data users from government, academia, journalism, civil society, and the private sector. All datasets are standardized to a common schema, which makes it easy to merge datasets and do cross-sectoral analysis.

NSIC - MSME Ministry organizes 'Enterprise India- Mega Job Fair'

  • More than 30 companies participate providing employment opportunities to skilled workforce. The major objective of Mega Job Fair was to provide employment opportunities to the students who are passing out from different courses being conducted in the Centre. More than 30 companies including renowned companies like LG Electronics, Munjal Showa (Hero Honda Group), JBM Group, Maxop, SPM Auto Comp, were present with Various job offers.
    • Addressing the inaugural Event, Shri B. B Swain, Secretary, MSME  congratulated everyone especially to NSIC - NTSC Okhla team for organizing the 'Enterprise India Mega Job Fair' after pandemic period to facilitate the trainees of the Centre for their employment .
    • The NSIC Centre organizes job fairs periodically  to fulfil the requirement of skilled manpower for industry. During last 6-7 years more than 70,000 trainees have been trained by the Centre and many of them have been successfully placed in the industry through campus placements.

In Manipur, the Indian Army opens a coaching center for poor pupils

  • The Indian Army started providing residential tutoring to children from economically disadvantaged and deprived areas of the northeast to prepare them for all-India competitive tests such as engineering and medical admission.
  • The Indian Army's Red Shield Division has inked a tripartite Memorandum of understanding with enterprise partner State Bank of India Foundation and mentoring partner National Integrity and Educational Development Organization to develop the Red Shield Centre for Excellence and Wellness.
  • According to the GOC Red Shield Division, the Indian Army has stayed at the forefront of nation building and has consistently contributed across a wide range of disciplines, particularly in the area of young empowerment.

Deployment of INS Gharial to Seychelles - Mission Sagar IX

  • Following up on the proposal received from the Govt of Seychelles , three ceremonial Saluting Guns, with ammunition, were delivered by the Ship to the Seychelles Defence Forces (SDF). These were formally presented by Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag (Retd), High Commissioner of India to Seychelles to Brigadier Michael Rosette, the Chief of Defence (CDF), SDF in a solemn ceremony held onboard INS Gharial.
    • INS Gharial also transshipped one 15 m Wave Rider Patrol Boat, sourced by Seychelles from Colombo and was handed over to Seychelles Defence Forces (SDF). During the stay of the Ship at Seychelles, the Indian Navy facilitated training of SDF personnel in domain specific maritime disciplines.

Eminent Sanskrit And Hindi Scholar, Padma Shri Dr Rama Kant Shukla Passes Away

  • Padma Shri Dr Rama Kant Shukla, a profound Sanskrit and Hindi Scholar, passed away in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh(UP). He was born in Khurja city in Bulandshahr district, UP. Dr Rama Kant Shukla is the founder and general secretary of Devavani Parishad in Delhi, and the founding chairman and editor of "Arvacinasamskrtam", a quarterly journal in Sanskrit. He was conferred the titles of Sanskrit Rashtrakavi, Kaviratna, and Kavi Siromani by literary and Sanskrit organizations.
    • The Government of India(GoI) honoured him with Padma Shri in 2013 for literature and education. In 2009, He was honoured with the President's Award under the Sanskrit category. He has also received the Sahitya Academy Award in 2018 under Sanskrit Category for poetry "Mama Janani".
    • He was also honoured with the UP Government's State Award; Sanskrit Rashtrakavi; Kalidas Samman; Delhi Sanskrit Academy's Akhil Bharatiya Maulika Sanskrit Rachana Puraskara, the Sanskrit Samaradhaka Puraskara, and others.

Former Australia Cricketer Andrew Symonds Dies In Car Accident

  • Former Australia cricketer and two-time World Cup winner Andrew Symonds died in a car crash. The 46-year-old was the sole passenger in the crash just outside of Townsville in his home state of Queensland. 
    • Symonds averaged 40.61 with the bat from 26 Tests for his country but was perhaps more well known for his exploits in white-ball cricket. He featured in 198 ODIs — scoring six centuries and 30 half-centuries — while also contributing 133 wickets with his more than handy off-spin and medium pace.
    • It was at the 2003 World Cup where Symonds burst onto the stage with perhaps his greatest innings as he torched Pakistan with an unbeaten 143 in Johannesburg early in the tournament and helped Australia remain unbeaten and defeat India in a one-sided final. The swashbuckling right-hander was also part of the victorious World Cup side at the 2007 World Cup in West Indies as Australia claimed their fourth 50-over World Cup title. Symonds also played 14 T20I for Australia, managing 337 runs and eight wickets.

Ministry of Culture to organise a week-long celebration for 'International Museum Day' across its museums

  • Under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsava, on the occasion of the International Museum Day (IMD), the Ministry of Culture, will organise a week-long celebration across its museums from.
  • The National Museum (New Delhi), National Gallery of Modern Art (New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru), Allahabad Museum (Prayagraj), Indian Museum (Kolkata), Victoria Memorial Hall (Kolkata), Salar Jung Museum (Hyderabad) and Science cities and centers under National Council of Science Museums (in 24 locations across India) are undertaking special initiatives throughout the designated week.
    • The Ministry of Culture has already announced free entry for visitors to all the museums across the country under the Ministry of Culture during the week 16th to 20th May,2022.

Sikkim 47th Statehood Day

  • On May 16, 1975, Sikkim became the 22nd state of India. Each year, it marks the occasion with a holiday and a series of events. Year 2022 marked 47 years since Sikkim officially became a state of India. On May 15, 1975, then President of India, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, signed a constitutional amendment, and, a day later, Sikkim became the 22nd state of India.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind as well as several Ministers also extended their best wishes to the state and people of Sikkim on the occasion.

Power Minister confers NHPC with first prize of 'Rajbhasha Shield'

  • Union Minister of Power and New and Renewable Energy, Shri R.K Singh conferred  NHPC Limited with the first prize for the year 2020-21 and the second prize for the year 2018-19 for excellent implementation of Rajbhasha during the meeting of Hindi Salahkar Samiti. Shri A.K. Singh, CMD, NHPC Limited received these awards from the Union Minister of Power during the meeting. 
    • During the meeting, Shri R.K Singh also released the latest issue of 'Rajbhasha Jyoti', NHPC's official language magazine and the book 'Bharatiya Sanskriti mein Prabandhan' written by Dr. Rajbir Singh, Group General Manager (Rajbhasha), NHPC.
    • NHPC has also been awarded "Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar" nine times by the Government of India for its excellent work in the field of implementation of Rajbhasha.

Chhattisgarh becomes first state to restore old pension scheme

  • Chhattisgarh became the first state in the country to restore the old pension scheme in order to provide assured income to retired employees. The state government sent a proposal to the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) for the withdrawal of Rs 17,000 crore accrued under the National Pension Scheme since November 2004. 
    • The government issued a notification saying that the old pension scheme will be effective from April 1, 2022. Also, the 10 per cent deduction for monthly contribution from the salary of government employees as a contribution to the new pension scheme will be abolished from April 1, 2022. However, a minimum of 12 per cent of basic salary will be deducted as per the General Provident Fund rule.
    • The old pension scheme gives 50 per cent of the employee's salary as pension.
