India Falls 8 Places to 150th Position in World Press Freedom Ranking

  • According to a report by a global media watchdog, India's ranking in the World Press Freedom Index fell down to 150th position from 2021's 142nd rank out of 180 countries. The ranking of India's neighbours, except that of Nepal, have also slid down, with the index placing Pakistan at 157th position, Sri Lanka 146th, Bangladesh 162nd and Maynmar at 176th position, the report released by Reporters Without Borders said. According to the RSF 2022 World Press Freedom Index, Nepal has climbed up by 30 points in the global ranking at 76th position. In 2021, the Himalayan nation had been placed at 106th position, Pakistan at 145th, Sri Lanka 127th, Bangladesh 152nd and Myanmar at 140th position in the index.
  • In 2022, Norway (1st) Denmark (2nd), Sweden (3rd) Estonia (4th) and Finland (5th) grabbed the top positions, while North Korea remained at the bottom of the list of the 180 countries and territories.

Prime Minister Modi Participates in India-Denmark Business Forum in Copenhagen

  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi jointly participated with Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, and Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, in the India- Denmark Business Forum at the Confederation of Danish Industry.
  • Prime Minister emphasized the complemetary skillsets of the two economies and invited Danish companies to take advantage of India's enormous opportunities in areas like green technologies, cold chains, waste to wealth, shipping and ports, among others. He highlighted the business-friendly approach of India and exhorted business communities of both sides to explore collaboration opportunities.
  • Prime Minister Frederiksen highlighted the role of the business communities in forming a bridge between the two countries.

Neobank Open Becomes 100th Unicorn of India, Raises $50 Mn From IIFL

  • The countdown for 100 unicorns had begun early in 2022 itself but the Russian attack on Ukraine had paused the start-ups' rush to touch the $1-billion valuation. Finally, neobanking fintech Open, founded by Anish Achuthan and close family members including wife Mabel Chacko, entered the club, making it a ton, according to Inc42's unicorn tracker.
  • It's been a long journey—more than a decade-- to 100 unicorns for India. Mobile advertising platform InMobi was the first unicorn announced in 2011.
  • NITI Aayog, which has championed many of the start-up flagship projects, called it a fantastic feat.

RBI Board Approves Nomination of Rajiv Ranjan as Ex-officio Member of Monetary Policy Committee

  • The 595th meeting of the Central Board of Directors of Reserve Bank of India was held through video conferencing under the Chairmanship of RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das.
  • The Board approved the nomination of Executive Director Rajiv Ranjan as an ex-officio member of the Monetary Policy Committee. In addition to Deputy Governors and other Directors of the Central Board, Department of Economic Affairs, Secretary, Ajay Seth was also present in the meeting.

Adani Wilmar Acquires 'Kohinoor', other Brands to Strengthen Food Business

  • Adani Wilmar Ltd (AWL) announced the acquisition of several brands, including the renowned 'Kohinoor' brand from McCormick Switzerland GMBH to strengthen its leadership in food business. The deal size was not disclosed.
  • The acquisition would give AWL exclusive rights over the brand 'Kohinoor' basmati rice along with 'Ready to Cook', 'Ready to Eat' curries and meals portfolio under the Kohinoor brand umbrella in India.
  • The addition of Kohinoor's domestic brand portfolio strengthens AWL's leadership position in the food FMCG category by augmenting a strong product basket with premium brands along with potential to scale value-added products.

Russia to Pull Out of International Space Station: Roscosmos

  • US space agency NASA and Russia's state space corporation Roscosmos have been the two largest partners on the International Space Station (ISS) for the last three decades. The two organisations have agreed to work together on the ISS through 2024, but on December 31, 2021, US President Joe Biden's administration committed to extending the operations through 2030. While Russia did not formally agree to the extension, in January 2022, Rogozin had said that Roscosmos and NASA were in talks on extending the operation of the ISS until 2030. But Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine, affected space cooperation between the two countries and Roscosmos's participation in the extension started to seem unlikely.
  • Russia has already made the decision to pull out of the International Space Station, likely in about two years time, chief of Roscosmos Dmitry Rogozin said.

Joydeep Karmakar Appointed as National Chief Rifle Coach by NRAI

  • Olympian shooter Joydeep Karmakar was named the chief national rifle coach by the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) and will be in charge of the Indian continent till 2025, including the Paris Olympics 2024.
  • The 42-year-old Karmakar had missed a bronze medal by a whisker in the men's 50-metre rifle prone event at the 2012 London Olympics. He said he understood his job will be scrutinised after Indian shooters returned empty-handed from the Tokyo Games last year and that his will focus as national coach will be on the mental strength of his wards.
  • Karmakar has been running his own shooting academy in Kolkata since 2015 and hopes to be the coach he himself did not have. Along with Karmakar's appointment, came the announcement of his retirement as an athlete.

Nicholas Pooran is New West Indies White Ball Captain

  • Nicholas Pooran replaced Kieron Pollard as captain of the West Indies one-day international and Twenty20 teams after Cricket West Indies confirmed the captaincy. Pollard retired from internationals in April 2022, and Pooran, who has been the former WI all-rounder's deputy for a year took over. Pooran's appointment covered the T20 World Cup in Australia in October and the Cricket World Cup in India in October 2023. He has already led the team in Pollard's absence, a home T20 series win against Australia in 2021.
  • CWI recommended that batter Shai Hope becomes vice-captain of the ODI team.

Home Minister Inaugurates NATGRID Bengaluru Campus

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID) campus in Bengaluru that will help in stopping modern day crimes and have the upper hand against any threats. The central government will soon be developing a national database to monitor hawala transactions, terrorist funding, counterfeit currency, narcotics, bomb threats, illegal arms smuggling and other terrorist activities.
  • India, like many other countries worldwide, has seen a rise in modern-day crimes operated from remote locations, making it harder for law enforcement agencies to trace the source or diffuse the threat.
  • NATGRID will be available to 11 central agencies and police of all states and union territories.

Meta Took Down over 27 Million Pieces of Bad Content in India in March 2022

  • Meta (formerly Facebook) took down 24.6 million pieces of content across 13 policies for Facebook and over 2.7 million pieces of content across 12 policies for Instagram in the month of March, in accordance with the IT Rules 2021.
  • Between March 1-31, Meta received 656 reports through the Indian grievance mechanism for Facebook, and responded to 100 per cent of those reports. For Instagram, the company received 1,150 reports through the Indian grievance mechanism, and it responded to 100 per cent of those 1,150 reports.
  • Under the new IT Rules 2021, big digital and social media platforms, with more than 5 million users, have to publish monthly compliance reports.

RPF Launches Focused Effort under "Operation Satark"

  • Railway Protection Force is an armed force of the union entrusted with the security of railway property, passenger area and passengers. It is the lead security agency in the field of railway security having a pan India reach. Focused effort under "Operation Satark" was launched from 5th April to 30th April 2022 wherein 26 cases of transportation of illegal tobacco products were detected with seizure of tobacco products worth more than Rs. 44 lakh and arrest of 14 persons involved. 177 cases of transportation of illicit liquor were intercepted with arrest of 97 persons and seizure of illicit liquor worth about Rs. 18 lakh. Unaccounted gold/silver jewellery and unaccounted cash is transported through rail for the purpose of tax evasion. RPF detected 23 such cases of tax evasion and handed over unaccounted cash/gold/silver worth about Rs. 2.60 crore to the respective tax authorities.

France's Naval Group Pulls Out of India's P-75I Submarine Project ahead of PM Modi's visit

  • French company Naval Group decided to pull out of India's P-75I project, under which six conventional submarines are to be domestically built for the Indian Navy, due to conditions mentioned in the request for proposal (RFP) related to air independent propulsion (AIP) system. AIP system allows a conventional submarine to stay submerged in water at higher speeds for a longer period of time.
  • Naval Group was ready to offer the best in class and adapted solution for Indian Navy's P-75I project, being fully in line with Aatma Nirbhar Bharat principle. However, the present RFP requires that the fuel cell AIP (air independent propulsion) be sea proven but the French Navy does not use such propulsion system.

Formula One Pioneer Tony 'Racing Dentist' Brooks Dies

  • Motorsport pioneer Tony Brooks, who won six Formula One grands prix in the 1950s and was nicknamed the "Racing Dentist", died aged 90. The Briton was the last surviving Formula One race winner of the 1950s. He won on his F1 debut at the non-championship 1955 Syracuse Grand Prix, where he was a last-minute entry and took time off from studying to become a dentist. He was part of a special group of drivers who were pioneers and pushed the boundaries at a time of great risk.
  • Brooks registered his first world championship victory at the British Grand Prix at Aintree in 1957, where he shared driving duties with Stirling Moss for the Vanwall team. Brooks is widely bracketed with Moss as the best British drivers never to have won a Formula One world championship.
  • He stood on the podium 10 times overall in his 38-race career, also winning the grands prix of Belgium, Italy, France and Germany.

Two Indian Groups Win NASA 2022 Human Exploration Rover Challenge

  • Two Indian student groups from Punjab and Tamil Nadu won the NASA 2022 Human Exploration Rover Challenge. Announced by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration during a virtual awards ceremony, the challenge involved as many as 91 teams, including 58 colleges and 33 high schools.
  • The challenge required US and international student teams to design, engineer, and test a human-powered rover on a course simulating terrain found on rocky bodies in the solar system. The teams also performed mission assignments, including sample retrievals and spectrographic analysis, while negotiating the course.
  • Decent Children Model Presidency School from Punjab was the winner of the STEM Engagement Award in the High School division. The team from Vellore Institute of Technology in Tamil Nadu was declared the winner in the College/University division in the Social Media Award.

National Seminar on Indian Cinema and Soft Power Inaugurated in Mumbai

  • Two-day National Seminar on 'Indian Cinema and Soft Power' was inaugurated in Mumbai today by film maker Shekhar Kapoor in presence of Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari. Speaking on this occasion, Governor Koshyari shared his experience about film watching and said today Indian Cinema is at par with Hollywood, but there is a need to learn from what Hollywood has given to the world. He said, the real power lies in the culture and there is a need to value and encourage it. The Governor said, Indian epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana are classic examples that have so many stories to tell.
  • The Indian Council for Cultural Relations and FLAME University had organized the two-day seminar. It aims to deliberate about the potential of Indian Cinema in movie making and policy design to further cultivate cultural sensitivities towards India.

India Official Country of Honour at Cannes Film Market

  • India was the official country of honour at the Cannes Film Market. As the country celebrates its 75th year of Independence, coinciding with Cannes Film Festival's 75th anniversary, a brand new restoration of Indian cinema legend Satyajit Ray's rare movie Pratidwandi was presented in an exclusive screening at the movie gala. Apart from Pratidwandi, Hollywood classic Singin' In The Rain, was presented in a brand new 4K restoration.
  • Bollywood star Deepika Padukone was a part of the competition jury of this edition of the festival along with prestigious names such as actor-filmmaker Rebecca Hall and Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi.

'Tholkilla Njan', the Autobiography of Retired IAS Officer Teeka Ram Meena

  • 'Tholkilla Njan', the autobiography of retired IAS officer Teeka Ram Meena which hit the stands in May 2022 recounts many of the eventful moments the 1988 batch officer experienced in his long career. The autobiography was brought out by DC Books and was released by Shashi Tharoor, MP, at the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club. A former Chief Electoral Officer (Kerala), Mr. Meena had retired in the rank of Additional Chief Secretary in January 2022.
  • 'Tholkilla Njan' covers the 1988 batch IAS officer's early days in Rajasthan and is also partly a 'service story,' recounting his life as a bureaucrat in Kerala. The latter section recalls his experiences, often eventful, some unpleasant, with the political leaders of his time.
