Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa Agrees to Remove Brother as PM

  • As per reports, Sri Lanka's President agreed to replace his older brother as Prime Minister in a proposed interim government to solve a political impasse caused by the country's worst economic crisis in decades.
  • President Gotabaya Rajapaksa agreed that a national council will be appointed to name a new prime minister and a Cabinet comprised of all parties in Parliament.
  • Rajapaksa earlier reshuffled his Cabinet and offered a unity government in an attempt to quell the protests, but opposition parties refused to join a government headed by the Rajapaksa brothers.

Mission SAGAR IX: INS Gharial Reaches Colombo, Delivers Critical Medical Aid to Sri Lanka

  • With the overarching aim of providing critical medical aid to Sri Lanka during the ongoing crisis, INS Gharial as part of Mission SAGAR IX reached Colombo. It delivered over 760 kg of 107 types of critical lifesaving medicines. The shipment was received by Sri Lankan Health Minister Channa Jayasumana.
  • In line with the Government's vision of SAGAR - Security And Growth for All in the Region - the Indian Navy undertakes several deployments titled Mission SAGAR to assist friendly countries. Since May 2020, the Indian Navy has successfully concluded eight such missions, deploying ten ships to 18 Friendly Foreign Countries.

IDBI Bank Board Approves Appointment of Two Govt. Nominee Directors

  • IDBI Bank's board approved the appointment of two government nominee directors with immediate effect.
  • The government nominee directors are Manoj Sahay, Joint Secretary and Financial Advisor, and Sushil Kumar Singh, Director, Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance.
  • Sahay, a 1994 batch IA&AS officer, presently handles six departments -- revenue, expenditure, economic affairs, financial services, DIPAM and public enterprises.
  • Singh is an officer of 2006 batch of Indian Defence Accounts Service.

JM Financial Elevates Sonia Dasgupta as CEO of Investment Banking

  • JM Financial, a diversified financial services group, elevated Sonia Dasgupta as Chief Executive Officer of Investment Banking. In the new role, she will lead the strategic initiatives and accelerate growth for the business.
  • Dasgupta succeeded Adi Patel and Atul Mehra who were Co-Heads of Investment Banking business till date.

Pencilton Introduces Contactless RuPay Card in the form of Keychain

  • Pencilton, a teen-focused fintech start-up, launched PencilKey, a National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) compliant RuPay contactless keychain, in partnership with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and Transcorp. Users can activate and manage their PencilKey through the Pencilton app which is also used to load money, check spends, block/unblock the account, set limits, etc.
  • PencilKey is linked to the PencilCard which is an all-in-one prepaid card, metro card, and bus card. PencilKey is equipped with the benefits of NCMC which works at the Delhi Airport Metro line and Goa's buses currently.
  • It is also scheduled to be accepted for metro travel in Pune, Chennai & Mumbai as well as in BEST buses in Mumbai. According to Pencilton, the virtual PencilCard comes for free.
  • Users can buy their PencilKey for Rs. 150 and PencilCard for Rs. 100, but as part of the company's launch offer, users can also buy a PencilKit (combo) which includes both PencilCard and PencilKey for Rs. 200.

60 Countries Join Hands for Open, Free and Secure Global Internet

  • The US, all the European Union (EU) member states and 32 non-EU countries signed a "Declaration for the Future of the Internet" that calls for an "open, free, global, interoperable, reliable, and secure" internet.
  • The declaration represents a political commitment among partners to advance a positive vision for the internet and digital technologies.
  • It also reaffirms and recommits its partners to a single global Internet - one that is truly open and fosters competition, privacy, and respect for human rights.
  • The declaration aims to protect human rights and fundamental freedoms of all people and promote a global Internet that advances the free flow of information.

Reserved Category Candidates are Entitled to General Seats on the Basis of Merit

  • The Supreme Court held that the reserved category candidates securing higher marks than the last of the general category candidates are entitled to get a seat/post in the General Category.
  • The Supreme Court was dealing with an appeal by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) against an order of the Rajasthan High Court which had held that the selection of the two reserved category candidates was required to be adjusted against the general category since they had scored more than the last of the general category candidates appointed, according to Bar & Bench.
  • The candidates belonging to reserved categories can as well stake claim to seats in unreserved categories if their merit and position in the merit list entitles them to do so, the bench comprising Justices MR Shah and BV Nagarathna observed.

  • Union Minister for Chemicals & Fertilizers and Health & Family Welfare, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya inaugurated the 7th edition of International conference on Pharma and Medical Devices sector 2022. The annual flagship three-day conference was held at Dr Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi.
  • This year, the India Pharma was planned around the theme: 'India Pharma-Vision 2047: Transformative agenda for future'. For India Medical Device, the theme is 'Transforming Healthcare through Innovation & Integrated Services'. The discussions planned in a span of 3 days will bring in new opportunities and ideas to make India, the global leader in quality medicines and to ensure the availability, accessibility, and affordability of drugs and medical devices in the country.

ReNew Power Inks 5 PPAs to Supply around 1500 MW Solar Energy

  • ReNew Power signed five power purchase agreements (PPAs) for the supply of around 1,500 MW electricity generated from solar plants. The company signed PPAs with Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) and Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd (PSPCL), as well as multiple long-term purchase agreements with corporate buyers together totalling around 2 GW. The new utility solar projects will be located in the western state of Rajasthan and have flat tariffs over 25 years.

Lt Gen BS Raju Takes over as Vice Chief of Indian Army

  • Lt General B.S. Raju, took over as the Vice Chief of the Army.
  • An alumnus of Sainik School Bijapur and National Defence Academy, he was commissioned in the Jat Regiment on December 15, 1984.
  • During his illustrious career spanning 38 years, he has held many important regimental, staff and instructional appointments in the Army headquarters and in field formation, including in the Military Secretary branch, Brigadier General Staff of the operationally active White Knight Corps, Deputy Director General, Military Operations, and Director General, Staff Duties.
  • He was awarded the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, and Yudh Seva Medal.

International Labour Day

  • International Labour Day is also known as Labour Day or May Day. It is celebrated globally every year on the 1st of May. In India, Labour Day is referred to as Antarrashtriya Shramik Diwas or Kamgar Din. The day has its origins in the labour union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement.

Gujarat Day

  • It is a state holiday in Gujarat. The state of Gujarat was formed on 1 May 1960. This day is marked as a holiday in Gujarat. This day is honoured by the people of Gujarat as it marks the remembrance of the struggle done by people to have a separate state of Gujarat. Two new states were born on this day of the year 1960 namely Maharashtra and Gujarat Day.
  • According to the Bombay Reorganisation Act, 1960 the bilingual state of Bombay was divided into two separate states Maharashtra for Marathi-speaking people and Gujarat for Gujarati-speaking people where Gujarat was established as the 15th state of the Indian Union.

World Laughter Day (First Sunday of May)

  • World Laughter Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of May every year. In 1998, the first celebration took place in Mumbai, India. It was arranged by Dr. Madan Kataria founder of the worldwide Laughter Yoga movement.
  • World Laughter Day is an annual event celebrated worldwide to raise awareness about laughter and its many healing benefits, as well as about thousands of community groups around the world who regularly practice comedy that promote wellness and overall well-being.

Snow Leopard Conservationist Charudutt Mishra Wins Whitley Gold Award

  • Noted snow leopard expert and wildlife conservationist Charudutt Mishra won the prestigious Whitley Gold Award for his contribution to involving indigenous communities in the conservation and recovery of big cat species in Asia's high mountain ecosystems. Princess Anne presented the award to Mishra at London's Royal Geographic Society. This is his second Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN) Award. He got the first in 2005.
  • Mishra was given the award for his work in 12 snow leopard range countries including Afghanistan, China, and Russia. In 2017, Mishra wrote a paper on eight approaches to community-based conservation that helped involve local communities in snow leopard protection in the upper reaches of the Himalayas, leading to a reduction in retribution killings of the big cats. UN Biodiversity Conference recognised his approach as an outstanding global practice.

Flipkart & West Bengal Inks Deal to Support Artisans

  • Flipkart inked an MoU with the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Textiles (MSME&T) Department, Government of West Bengal. The deal was signed to train and support local artisans, weavers, and handicraft makers to utilise the Flipkart platform to scale their local products nationally. Flipkart Samarth programme was designed to empower artisans/weavers with ecosystem support.

Devendra Fadnavis Releases Book on Amit Shah "Amit Shah Ani Bhajapachi Vatchal"

  • Devendra Fadnavis, former Chief Minister (CM) of Maharashtra, released a Marathi book on Amit Shah, titled "Amit Shah Ani Bhajapachi Vatchal", a Marathi version of the book "Amit Shah and The March of BJP". The book was published by Bloomsbury India.
  • The book was originally written by Dr. Anirban Ganguly and Shiwanand Dwivedi and it was translated into Marathi by Dr. Jyostna Kolhatkar. The book documents the life and political journey of Amit Shah and details his contribution to BJP in making it the world's biggest political organisation.
