OPEC Appoints Kuwait's Haitham Al Ghais as New Secretary General

  • Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) appointed Kuwaiti oil executive Haitham Al Ghais as its new secretary-general, as demand for oil continues to improve amid a mild recovery from the coronavirus pandemic. Al Ghais, a veteran of the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation and Kuwait's OPEC governor from 2017 to June 2021, will take the group's reins in August, replacing Mohammad Barkindo.
  • The move comes as the oil exporters' group and its allies prepare to decide on a future course for oil production. Opec+ is expected to stick to the plan and increase production by 400,000 barrels per day in February.

RBI Approves Anup Bagchi's Re-appointment as ICICI Bank Executive Director

  • The RBI approved the re-appointment of Anup Bagchi as the Executive Director of ICICI Bank for three years, even as the bank had cleared the term for five years.
  • The shareholders of the bank at its Annual General Meeting in August 2021 had approved Bagchi's re-appointment for five years effective February 1, 2022.
  • ICICI Bank has two more executive directors -- Sandeep Batra and Vishakha Mulye.

Hero MotoCorp Appoints Arun Jaura as CTO

  • Two-wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp announced the appointment of industry veteran Arun Jaura as its chief technology officer (CTO) to lead the company's research and development (R&D).
  • The company also announced the resignation of Neerja Sharma, company secretary and chief compliance officer.
  • Jaura, who was the managing director of Michelin India Technology Center before taking up the current position, reports to Hero MotoCorp Chairman and CEO Pawan Munjal.

HDFC Bank Starts Online Customs Duty Payment Facility for Customers

  • HDFC Bank's integration with Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) ICEGATE platform has gone live, allowing customers to pay for their customs duty directly via the bank.
  • With this, the bank will offer customers the convenience of directly paying customs duty by selecting HDFC Bank.
  • This follows authorisation by the Principal Chief Controller of Accounts of CBIC to collect IGST on import and export of goods and services.
  • HDFC Bank facilitated both retail and wholesale payments of customs duty.

China's $1 Trillion 'Artificial Sun' Fusion Reactor Just Got Five Times Hotter than the Sun

  • China's "artificial sun" set a new world record after superheating a loop of plasma to temperatures five times hotter than the sun for more than 17 minutes.
  • The EAST (Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak) nuclear fusion reactor maintained a temperature of 158 million degrees Fahrenheit (70 million degrees Celsius) for 1,056 seconds. The achievement brings scientists a small yet significant step closer to the creation of a source of near-unlimited clean energy.

Govt. Re-appoints Vijay Paul Sharma as CACP Chairman

  • The Centre re-appointed Vijay Paul Sharma as the chairman of the Commission for Agricultural Costs & Prices (CACP) after he relinquished the post in May last year following completion of the five-year tenure. The role of the CACP chairman will be crucial in the proposed committee on the minimum support price (MSP) and other reforms. Sharma, a professor at the Centre for Management in Agriculture at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, was appointed CACP Chairman for the first time in June 2016.
  • The Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices, established in 1965, is an apex advisory body under the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India. It's an expert body that recommends the Minimum Support Prices (MSPs) by taking into consideration various factors.

Oscar Winner and Groundbreaking Star Sidney Poitier Dies

  • Sidney Poitier, the groundbreaking actor and enduring inspiration who transformed how Black people were portrayed on screen, became the first Black actor to win an Academy Award for best lead performance and the first to be a top box-office draw, died. He was 94.
  • Poitier, winner of the best actor Oscar in 1964 for "Lilies of the Field," died Thursday in the Bahamas, according to Eugene Torchon-Newry, acting director general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Bahamas.

Amitabh Bachchan and Jhulan Goswami to be Ambassadors of Legends League Cricket

  • Legends League Cricket roped in pacer Jhulan Goswami as an Ambassador to promote Women's Empowerment initiatives. She will be the face of the League and also launch a special initiative to further promote women's participation in cricket.
  • Legends League Cricket also announced an All Women Match Official Team for the League. This is for the first time in cricket that an all-women Match Officials team would be officiating an entire men's league. The League will have ICC empaneled female umpires and match referees from all across the world.
  • Legendary Amitabh Bachchan joined Legends League Cricket as its Ambassador and will be promoting the League. The League also has former India Head Coach, Ravi Shastri as its Commissioner looking after the Cricketing aspect.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas

  • Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is observed on January 9th every year to mark the contribution of the Overseas Indian community in the development of India. On this day in 1915, Mahatma Gandhi, the greatest Pravasi, returned to India from South Africa, which led India's freedom struggle and changed the lives of Indians forever. Therefore, January 9 was selected as the day to celebrate this occasion.
  • Since 2003, PBD conventions are being held every year. Its format was revised in 2015 to celebrate the PBD once every two years and also to hold theme-based PBD Conferences during the interim period with participation from overseas diaspora experts, policymakers and stakeholders.

  • HarperCollins acquired rights to publish the authorised biography of Ratan Tata, emeritus chairman of Tata Sons. The book titled "Ratan N. Tata: The Authorized Biography" by Dr Thomas Mathew will be published globally by HarperCollins in all formats in November 2022.
  • Udayan Mitra at HarperCollins India acquired world rights in all languages from Anish Chandy at Labyrinth Literary Agency. The book will be published by HarperCollins India in English and the principal Indian languages, by HarperCollins Leadership in the US and by William Collins in the UK.
