Philippine: Duterte's Daughter Files Candidacy for Vice President Elections

  • Sara Duterte-Carpio, the daughter of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, filed her candidacy for Vice President in the May 2022 elections.
  • Carpio sent a representative to the Commission on Elections to file her candidacy as substitute vice presidential candidate under the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) that she joined earlier.

Joe Biden Picks Senior Google Health Advisor Robert Califf as FDA Chief

  • US President Joe Biden picked senior Google Health advisor Dr. Robert Califf as next chief of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
  • Currently, Califf is a professor of medicine at the Duke University School of Medicine, where he previously served as Vice Chancellor and founded the Duke Clinical Research Institute, and works as senior advisor for Verily Life Sciences and Google Health, two divisions of parent company Alphabet.
  • Dr. Califf is an internationally-recognised expert in clinical trial research, health disparities, healthcare quality, and cardiovascular medicine.

Sri Lanka Calls for in-person BIMSTEC Summit, Postpones December Meet

  • Sri Lanka has called for an in-person BIMSTEC summit, the date of which is yet to be decided. This will be the 5th such summit of the grouping.
  • BIMSTEC or Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation has 7 members - India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, and Sri Lanka. The grouping is more than 20 years old and was formed in 1997. The last summit took place in Kathmandu in 2018 with PM Modi and other member-leaders attending the meet.
  • Sri Lanka is the chair of the grouping and had earlier proposed holding a virtual summit on 9th December which has now been postponed. Before that it had proposed August for the summit.
  • This is the 2nd time Colombo had to post the summit, the reason for which has not been given. First April saw BIMSTEC foreign minister meet taking place virtually during which agenda for the leaders' summit was taken up.

Earth's Lower Atmosphere is Expanding Due to Climate Change

  • Earth's atmosphere is rising because of climate change, a new study shows.
  • Weather balloon measurements, taken in the Northern Hemisphere over the past 40 years, reveal that the lowest layer of Earth's atmosphere — called the troposphere — has been expanding upward at a rate of roughly 164 feet (50 meters) per decade, and climate change is the cause.
  • This is an unambiguous sign of changing atmospheric structure. These results provide independent confirmation, in addition to all the other evidence of climate change, that greenhouse gases are altering our atmosphere.

Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai among World's Top 10 Polluted Cities

  • Of the world's top 10 cities with the worst air quality, three -- Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai, are in India, data from air quality and pollution city tracking service from IQAir, a Switzerland-based climate group showed.
  • While Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) at 556 made it to the top of the list, Kolkata and Mumbai recorded an AQI of 177 and 169, respectively, at fourth and sixth position, on the list.
  • The cities with the worst AQI indices also include Lahore, in Pakistan, and Chengdu, in China.
  • A real-time air quality information platform -- IQAir is also a technology partner of the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP).

UP Gets its First Operationalised Private Sector Defence Manufacturing Facility

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the first operationalised private sector defence manufacturing facility in the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC) in Lucknow.
  • The facility, run by Aerolloy Technologies, a wholly owned subsidiary of PTC industries, will manufacture parts for aircraft engines, helicopter engines, structural parts for aircrafts, drones and UAV, submarines, Ultra-Light Artillery guns, space launch vehicles and strategy systems.
  • Singh also laid the foundation stone for an integrated metal manufacturing facility under PTC Industries that will produce key raw materials in titanium and other exotic alloys for aerospace applications.

Australia Wins its first T20 WC

  • Australia lifted their maiden T20 World Cup trophy with a commanding eight-wicket win over New Zealand in the title clash which was rendered one-sided by Mitchell Marsh with his blistering 77-run knock, at Dubai International Stadium.
  • Skipper Kane Williamson top-scorer for the Black Caps with his 85-run knock while opener Martin Guptill contributed 28 runs after Australia inserted them in to take first strike.
  • Opener David Warner's 38-ball 53 and Marsh's 50-ball unbeaten 77 meant that Australia overhauled the target of 173 with consummate ease in 18.5 overs.

VVS Laxman to Replace Rahul Dravid as National Cricket Academy Boss

  • The Indian cricket board (BCCI) persuaded former India batsman VVS Laxman to head the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.
  • Laxman will take over from his former India teammate Rahul Dravid, who was appointed the chief coach of the Indian team, after the term of Ravi Shastri ended with the team's exit from the T20 World Cup.
  • Laxman has already quit as mentor of IPL team Sunrisers Hyderabad and will also not be part of any commentary panel or write columns for newspapers to avoid getting into a conflict of interest situation.

Mahua Moitra Appointed TMC's Goa Unit in-charge ahead of Assembly Polls

  • The TMC, which is looking to expand its footprints nationally, appointed firebrand Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra as the state in-charge of the party's Goa unit, months ahead of the assembly polls there.
  • The party had earlier nominated former Goa chief minister Luizinho Faleiro for bypoll to a Rajya Sabha seat in West Bengal.

West Bengal to Get Seven New Integrated Check Post

  • The government of India has decided to establish seven new Integrated Check Post (ICP) in West to ensure better connectivity and security.
  • This decision comes after a high-level meeting that was held in Kolkata between the Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla and other senior officials of the West Bengal government. The meeting was convened to discuss pending land acquisition cases for construction of border fence and road projects, Border Out Posts and Integrated Check Posts.
  • Of these seven ICPs, five will be established on the Indo-Bangladesh border and one each on the Indo-Nepal and Indo-Bhutan border by the Land Port Authority of India (LPAI).

Tenure of ED, CBI Chiefs Extended

  • Days before the winter session of Parliament, the government passed two Ordinances extending the tenures of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) chiefs to up to five years.
  • The chiefs of the central agencies currently have a two-year tenure. The Ordinance is clearly aimed to ensure the continuance of current ED chief S. K. Mishra, who is already on an extension, having reached 60 in 2020. His term would have come to an end on November 17.
  • Both Ordinances have been signed by President Ram Nath Kovind.
  • The chiefs of the top agencies can be given extensions, according to the Ordinances, every year for up to three years after they complete the two-year term.

Russia Starts Supplying S-400 Air Defence Missile Systems to India

  • In a major boost to Indian capabilities to take out enemy fighter aircraft and cruise missiles at long range, Russia has started supplying the S-400 Triumf air defence missile system to India.
  • Russia has started supplying S-400 air defense system to India", Director of Russian Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation (FSMTC) Dmitry Shugaev said in Dubai air show. FSMTC is the Russian government's main defence export control organisation.
  • As per reports, the parts of the air defence system have started reaching India and they would be first deployed at a location close to the Western border from where it can tackle threats from both parts of the Western and Northern borders with Pakistan and China both.
  • The S-400 air defence system was contracted for by India in a deal worth around Rs. 35,000 crore and five squadrons would be provided to India for tacking air threats from up to 400 km.

Thailand Becomes First Foreign Customer of AT-6 Light-attack Aircraft

  • The Royal Thai Air Force awarded a $143 million contract to Textron Aviation for eight Beechcraft AT-6 Wolverine aircraft, ground support equipment, spare parts, training and other equipment.
  • Thailand's deal with the American company on the first day of the Dubai Airshow makes it the first international customer of the light attack aircraft. Under the contract, work will take place at the company's Wichita, Kansas, facility.

Defence Ministry Formally Lifts Ban on Italian Firms Leonardo SpA, AgustaWestland

  • The defence ministry formally lifted a ban on Italian firm Leonardo SpA and its subsidiary AgustaWestland as their names did not figured in an updated list of companies debarred and suspended from business dealings with it.
  • Leonardo SpA, which was earlier known as Finmeccanica, and AgustaWestland were banned in 2014 in the wake of allegations of corruption in a Rs. 3,500-crore VVIP helicopters deal.
  • The updated list figured six companies as 'debarred firms' while 15 companies have been put under the category of 'put on hold/suspended'.

Babasaheb Purandare, Noted Historian and Padma Vibhushan Awardee, Passes Away

  • Noted historian-writer and Padma Vibhushan awardee Babasaheb Purandare passed away in Pune (Maharashtra). He was 99.
  • Balwant Moreshwar Purandare was popularly known as Babasaheb.
  • He was conferred with Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award, in 2019 and the Maharashtra Bhushan award in 2015. He had also penned various books on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and had dedicated his life to history and research.
  • Babasaheb had also written and directed the play "Jaanta Raja" which reportedly has been performed by over 200 artists and translated and enacted in as many as five languages.

Plaeto Signs Rahul Dravid as Brand Ambassador

  • Plaeto, a footwear brand for children, roped in Rahul Dravid as its brand ambassador and mentor. The brand announced the partnership along with a campaign featuring Dravid. The campaign was developed by Bangalore-based People Design and Communication, in partnership with team Plaeto. The video campaign was promoted across the brand's social media channels and went live on 14th November.
  • Plaeto, founded by Ravi Kallayil, Sara Kilgore and Pavan Kareti, in March 2020, claims to develop foot health-focused 'shoes for growing feet', designed specifically for Indian children. Plaeto shoes have a 50% lower carbon footprint as compared to the average athletic shoe.

West Bengal Education Department Wins Gold at Skoch Award

  • West Bengal school and higher education and tourism departments won the gold at Skoch Award.
  • Instituted in 2003, the Skoch Award recognizes efforts in digital, financial, social inclusion, governance, inclusive growth, technology and applications and corporate leadership.
  • Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, amongst other leaders, praised the recognition.

Jharkhand Foundation Day

  • November 15 marks the Jharkhand Foundation Day. The beautiful state that is located in the north-eastern part of India and is also called 'The land of forest' or 'Bushland'.
  • It was on November 15 in 2000 when the Chhotanagpur area was segregated from the southern half of Bihar to give rise to another state named Jharkhand. By doing so, the latter became the 28th Indian state.
  • Right now, the forests of Chhotanagpur plateau and Santhal Pargana make up Jharkhand. The tribals of this state had sought out a separate state for themselves long back as post-independence, the tribal people had got meagre socioeconomic advantages.
  • They formed Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, which continued to conduct protests and appeal to the government soon after India became independent in 1947. As a result, the government launched the Jharkhand Area Autonomous Council in 1995 and yielded to the demand in 2000.

CBSE Brings in MCQs for 1st Term Examination

  • The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) finalised a new pattern for the board examination for the first term of Class 12 and Class 10, which will begin on November 16 and November 17, respectively. The first term will have multiple choice questions and the exam duration will be 90 minutes. According to the CBSE, this time, the students will be given 20 minute-reading time instead of 15. Every question will have four options, and the student has to encircle the correct one. They have been given the option to appear in the examination centre of their choice as due to Covid many of them were displaced. Many students are still at their native places, while their schools are at other locations.

BHU Gets New VC

  • Professor Sudhir Kumar Jain, director of the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar, was appointed as the new vice-chancellor of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU).
  • A Padma Shri awardee, Prof. Jain will hold the office for a period of three.
  • Jain served on the faculty of IIT Kanpur for 35 years from 1984-2019. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Roorkee (1979), and Masters (1980) and Doctoral (1983) degrees from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena.

Bhadrachalam Added as a Destination in IRCTC's Ramayana Circuit Train

  • Bhadrachalam in Telangana was added as a destination in the IRCTC's Ramayana Circuit train. Union Minister for Culture and Tourism G. Kishan Reddy has expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the inclusion of Bhadrachalam as one of the destinations in the Ramayana Circuit of the Pilgrim Special Train. Bhadrachalam is home to Sree Sita Ramachandra Swamy temple.
  • The aim of the Ramayana Yatra Train is to connect all the important locations of Lord Rama's journey during his lifetime, the inclusion of Bhadrachalam Road Station will complete the Ramayana Circuit.
