Pakistan to Allow Banned Islamist Militant Group to Contest Election

  • As per reports, Pakistan is to free more than 2,000 jailed activists of a banned Islamist militant group and allow the movement to contest elections, under a deal with the government struck to end weeks of violent clashes.
  • In return, the Tehrik-e-Labaik Pakistan has agreed to shun the politics of violence and withdraw its longstanding demand to have France`s ambassador expelled over the publication of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad by a French satirical magazine.
  • The caricatures have triggered repeated demonstrations by the group to protest at what it considers blasphemy.
  • Prime Minister Imran Khan`s government banned the TLP after its protests turned violent earlier this year, designated it a terrorist group and arrested its chief Saad Rizvi.

U.S. to Cut Ethiopia from Trade Program over Rights Abuses

  • President Joe Biden decided to cut out Ethiopia from a U.S. trade program, setting the path for further sanctions against the African nation over its failure to end a nearly yearlong war in the Tigray region that has led to "gross violations" of human rights.
  • Mr. Biden in a letter to Congress said that Ethiopia has not met eligibility requirements to remain a beneficiary of the African Growth and Opportunity Act. The program provides sub-Saharan African nations duty-free access to the United States on the condition they meet certain requirements, including eliminating barriers to U.S. trade and investment and making progress toward political pluralism.
  • The sanction goes into effect on January 1, 2022.

More than 100 Countries Join Pact to Slash Planet-warming Methane Emissions

  • More than 100 countries joined a US- and EU-led effort to slash emissions of the potent greenhouse gas methane 30 per cent by 2030 from 2020 levels, an initiative aimed at tackling one of the main causes of climate change.
  • Methane is the main greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide. It has a higher heat-trapping potential than CO2 but breaks down in the atmosphere faster - meaning that cutting methane emissions can have a rapid impact in reining in global warming.
  • The Global Methane Pledge, launched at the COP26 summit in Glasgow after being announced in September, now covers countries representing nearly half of global methane emissions and 70 per cent of global GDP.
  • Among the new signatories was Brazil - one of the world's five biggest emitters of methane.
  • China, Russia and India, also top-five methane emitters, have not signed on to the pledge. Those countries were all included on a list identified as targets to join the pledge.

SpaceX Sets up Subsidiary in India

  • World's richest person Elon Musk-owned SpaceX incorporated its wholly-owned subsidiary in India to start local broadband operations.
  • SpaceX's satellite broadband arm Starlink aims to start broadband services in India from December 2022, with 2 lakh active terminals subject to permission from the government.

Edelgive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2021

  • Hurun India and EdelGive jointly released the Edelgive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2021. The list was topped by Azim Premji, the founder chairman of Wipro, with a donation of Rs. 9,713 crore during fiscal 2020-21 which is around Rs. 27 crore a day. HCL's Shiv Nadar once again retained the second spot on the list with an annual donation of Rs. 1,263 crore, marking a 59 per cent rise. Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Industries, and his family occupied the third spot on the philanthropy list with an annual donation of Rs. 577 crore.

Jio Becomes 1st Operator to Bring Mobile Connectivity to Demchok

  • Billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio became the first operator to bring mobile connectivity to Demchok in eastern Ladakh with the start of its 4G voice and data services in the border village.
  • Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, Member of Parliament from Leh, inaugurated Jio mobile tower in Demchok and dedicated 4G services to the people of the border village, Army, ITBA, and travellers.
  • Sitting at over 13,000 feet above sea level, Demchok serves as the last landmark on the Indian border with China to facilitate communication to Jawans posted at high altitudes and also local residents.

Tata Consultancy Services to be New Title Sponsor for Jaguar Formula E Team

  • Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has joined the iconic British racing team Jaguar Racing as title partner ahead of the 2021/22 ABB FIA For­mula E World Champion­ship. The team will be kno­wn as Jaguar TCS Racing.
  • During this multi-year partnership, TCS and Jaguar will create a platform that will drive research and innovation while steering towards advanced concepts and electric vehicle technologies. For­mula E Championship is a single-seater motorsport cha­mp­ionship for electric cars.

J&K Team Clinch 1st Position in World Deaf Judo Championship

  • The Jammu & Kashmir team for deaf clinched 1st position in World Deaf Judo Championship held at Paris Versailles, France. Rakshanda Mehak who is part of the Indian team for the deaf clinched the bronze medal by defeating the South Korean team in the semifinal. The championship was held at Versailles, France. The championship is organised by the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf.

TMC Wins in all 4 by-polls in Bengal

  • The ruling Trinamool Congress steam-rolled the opposition to score a 4-0 clean sweep in by-elections held on October 30, leaving the opposition in tatters.
  • In a major setback to BJP, the saffron camp's candidates lost their deposits in three constituencies Dinhata, Gosaba and Khardaha as they failed to win the one-sixth of valid votes polled.
  • The BJP candidate from Santipur was the only one who managed not to lose his deposit by polling over a fifth of the votes cast. The Left Front's candidates managed to secure third spots in all constituencies.
  • The TMC, in total, bagged 75.02 per cent of the votes cast, whereas the BJP got some 14.48 per cent votes, in the four assembly segments.

Amarinder Resigns from Congress, Announces Name of his Party

  • Former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh resigned from the Congress and announced the name of his party--Punjab Lok Congress--just months before the Assembly polls.
  • The party will be formally launched later and the Election Commission has no objection to its name.
  • The move by the former CM came days after he dismissed reports of back-end talks with the Congress, saying the time for rapprochement is over.

Former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh Arrested

  • The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh under criminal provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
  • The arrest was made after over 12-hour questioning in a case linked to an alleged extortion racket in the Mumbai police establishment.
  • The NCP leader was produced in a special court in Mumbai that remanded him in ED's custody till November 6.
  • The ED registered the PMLA case against Deshmukh and others after the CBI booked him in a corruption case related to Rs. 100-crore bribery allegations levelled by Mumbai ex-top cop Param Bir Singh.

Air Forces of India and Egypt Conduct Two-day Joint Exercise

  • Air forces of India and Egypt conducted a two-day exercise at the latter's El Berigat airbase to enhance mutual understanding and share operational experience. The exercise was called 'Desert Warrior'.
  • In December 2019, then Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria had visited Egypt and met Air Marshal Mohamed Abbas Helmy, the Commander-in-Chief of Egypt Air Force, to boost cooperation between the two services.
  • The IAF and Egyptian Air Force participated in Exercise Desert Warrior conducted at El Berigat Air Base, Egypt from 30-31 Oct 2021. It enhanced mutual understanding and provided an opportunity to share valuable operational experience.

G20 Summit Ends with the Adoption of Rome Declaration

  • The 2021 G20 (Group of Twenty) Summit was held in Rome, Italy on October 30 and 31, 2021. It was the 16th meeting of the G20 group. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi. The summit concluded with the adoption of the Rome Declaration by G20 Leaders.

'Vax' Named Oxford English Dictionary's Word of the Year 2021

  • 'Vax' was chosen as the word of the year by the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) in 2021. Vax is derived from the Latin word Vacca, which means cow. Vax is used as a short form for vaccines and means a substance put into a person's body to prevent them from getting a disease. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, words related to vaccines saw a surge in 2021, including terms like double-vaxxed, unvaxxed and anti-vaxxer.

Ancient Tomb of Pharaoh Ramesses II Official Discovered at Saqqara

  • A tomb dating back over 3,200 years that was built for a senior official of one of Egypt's most powerful pharaohs was discovered at Saqqara.
  • Inscriptions found in the tomb say that Ptah-M-Wia, the person buried there, held a number of positions including head of the treasury and chief supervisor of livestock during the reign of pharaoh Ramesses II (reign 1279–1213 B.C.), who expanded Egypt's empire as far as modern-day Syria. Ramesses II was also known for his building endeavors including the expansion of Karnak Temple. Ptah-M-Wia was head of the treasury centuries before the invention of minted coins; at that time people made payments with goods, rations or precious metals.
