Afghanistan, Myanmar Will Not Address UN General Assembly

  • Afghanistan and Myanmar did not address the UN General Assembly's high-level General Debate.
  • According to the latest list of speakers for the last day of the high-level General Debate of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly, Afghanistan and Myanmar were not listed as speakers to address the session.
  • Afghanistan representative inscribed on the list for the debate was H E Mr Ghulam M. Isaczai.

UAE Picks New Finance Environment Ministers

  • United Arab Emirates Prime Minister and Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced ministerial changes.
  • Sheikh Mohammed's son and the current deputy ruler of Dubai, was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister. Mohammed bin Hadi Al Husseini replaced long-serving Obaid Humaid Al Tayer as the Emirates' minister of state for finance, while Maryam Al Muhairi became the minister of climate change and environment.

Tata Steel World's First Steel Company to Pledge Pruning of Sea Trade Emissions

  • Tata Steel, the country's oldest steel producer, has joined Sea Cargo Charter (SCC) as part of its sustainability objectives and initiatives on reduction of Scope 3 greenhouse gas emission in ocean trade.
  • The company is the 24th organisation to join the association working to reduce environmental impacts of global seaborne cargo and is the world's first steel producer to become the signatory of SCC.
  • The Sea Cargo Charter (SCC) is a global framework for assessing and disclosing the climate alignment of chartering activities. Launched in October 2020, there are currently already 24 signatories as part of this organisation.
  • SCC establishes a common, global baseline to quantitatively assess and disclose whether chartering activities are in line with climate goals set by UN maritime agency, the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

HDFC Bank Ltd Voted 'Overall Most Outstanding Company in India'

  • Over 1,070 fund managers, analysts, bankers, ratings agencies voted HDFC Bank among banks in India for 4th year in a row as 'Overall Most Outstanding Company in India,' in a poll conducted by reputed publication Asiamoney.
  • The poll, known as Asia's Outstanding Companies Poll, is designed to acknowledge listed companies that have excelled in areas such as financial performance, management team excellence, investor relations, and CSR initiatives. Further, the poll aims to identify and recognise publicly listed companies in 2 categories: by country and by sector, in which it operates. Over 1,070 fund managers, analysts, bankers, and rating agencies took part in the voting which concluded on July 16, 2021.

Vistara Partners with IndusInd Bank to Launch Co-branded Credit Card

  • Full-service carrier Vistara has partnered with IndusInd Bank to launch co-branded credit card Club Vistara IndusInd Bank Explorer.
  • The credit card will offer various benefits such as a complimentary business class ticket, membership of the airline's frequent flyer programme and lounge access.
  • The all-new card provides the cardholders with a complimentary 'Gold' class membership to Club Vistara (CV), under which they can earn points on every flight and can even redeem their earned CV points to avail flights.

India Dubai's Second Biggest Trade Partner

  • According to official data released, India has emerged as Dubai's second biggest trading partner after China with the overall volume touching 38.5 billion dirham in the first half of 2021.
  • According to a Dubai government statement, the emirate had a trade volume of 86.7 billion dirham with China in H1 (first half) of 2021, followed by India and the US at third position.
  • Trade with India grew 74.5 per cent year-on-year to 67.1 billion dirham from 38.5 billion dirham in H1 2020.
  • Saudi Arabia came fourth with 30.5 billion dirham up 26 per cent from H1 2020, followed by Switzerland at 24.8 billion dirham.

  • England men's all-rounder Moeen Ali decided to call time on his Test match career.
  • Ali made his Test debut back in 2014 and went on to represent England in 64 Test matches. He took 195 Test wickets including 5 five-wicket hauls and scored five Test match centuries during his career.

Sydney Sixers Sign Shafali Verma and Radha Yadav

  • Sydney Sixers confirmed the signing of Shafali Verma and Radha Yadav for the upcoming Women's Big Bash League (WBBL).
  • Verma, who in 2019 became India's youngest ever women's T20 international, is widely considered the best batting talent in the world and currently sits atop the ICC Women's T20I Player Rankings.
  • Verma is expected to form a lethal combination with Alyssa Healy, Ellyse Perry and Ash Gardner at the top of the order for the Sixers, giving the team the most exciting top four in WBBL history.

BJP MLA Nimaben Acharya Gujarat Assembly's First Woman Speaker

  • Veteran legislator Nimaben Acharya was unanimously elected the first woman Speaker of the Gujarat Assembly, which met for the two-day monsoon session.
  • A three-time BJP MLA and a two-time Congress MLA, Ms. Acharya is one of the senior most MLAs in the State.
  • The name of the MLA from Bhuj, Kutch, was proposed by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and the Opposition Congress supported her nomination.
  • For the first time after the formation of Gujarat in 1960, the Assembly has a woman Speaker.
  • The election has been necessitated after Rajendra Trivedi resigned and joined the Cabinet which took over earlier this month when Vijay Rupani and his entire Cabinet had resigned.

Former Goa CM Luizinho Faleiro Resigns as Congress MLA

  • Former Goa Chief Minister and Congress leader Luizinho Faleiro resigned as member of the state Legislative Assembly and is likely to join the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC).
  • Faleiro, who represented the Navelim Assembly seat and was recently made the Goa Congress's campaign committee chief in the wake of the state polls due next year.
  • With his resignation, the Congress's strength in the 40-member House has been reduced to four.

BJP Gets First MP from UT in Rajya Sabha

  • Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and L. Murugan were elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha from Assam and Madhya Pradesh, respectively.
  • BJP nominee S. Selvaganapathy was declared elected unopposed to the lone seat in Rajya Sabha from Puducherry, the first time the saffron party has got representation in the Upper House from the Union Territory, while DMK's two nominees, Kanimozhi N V N Somu and K R N Rajeshkumar, were elected without contest from Tamil Nadu.
  • Sushmita Dev, who left the Congress and joined the Trinamool Congress a little over a month ago, was declared elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha from West Bengal.

India, Oman Ink Pact to Boost Maritime Security Cooperation

  • India and Oman inked an agreement for exchange of white shipping information and to boost maritime security cooperation in reflection of growing cooperation between the two sides. The pact was signed by Chief of Navy Staff Admiral Karambir Singh and his Omani counterpart Admiral Saif bin Nasser bin Mohsen Al-Rahbi in Muscat.
  • The Indian Navy cooperates with the Royal Navy of Oman on many fronts that include operational interactions and training.
  • Both navies have been participating in the biennial maritime exercise Naseem Al Bahr since 1993. This exercise was last conducted in 2020 off Goa and the next edition is scheduled in 2022.

World Rabies Day

  • World Rabies Day is observed on September 28 every year to raise awareness about the impact of the viral disease and how to prevent it. This day is also observed globally to mark the death anniversary of French biologist, microbiologist and chemist, Louis Pasteur, who developed the first rabies vaccine. This is the only global day of action and awareness for rabies prevention.
  • World Rabies Day was observed for the first time on September 28, 2007. The event was a collaboration between the Alliance for Rabies Control and the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, USA, along with the World Health Organization (WHO). The organisations started observing this day after the world suffered from the adverse effects of rabies.
  • This year, the theme for World Rabies Day was 'Rabies: Facts, not Fear', based on ending the fear from the people and empowering them with the facts. The theme is aimed at sharing facts about rabies and not spreading fear about the disease by relying on misinformation and myths.

2021 Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Winners Announced

  • Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for science and technology 2021, were announced during the 80th foundation day of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Every year, CSIR presents this award to scientists below 45 years of age for their contributions in biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, medicine, engineering and earth, atmosphere, ocean and planetary sciences. The award comprises a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh.

  • Dr. Amit Singh, department of microbiology and cell biology, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.
  • Dr. Arun Kumar Shukla, department of biological sciences and bioengineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.
  • Chemical sciences category:
  • Two researchers from the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bengaluru, Dr. Kanishka Biswas from the International Centre of Materials Science and Dr. T Govindaraju, from the Bio-organic Chemistry Laboratory, announced as recipients.
  • Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean and Planetary Sciences category:
  • Dr. Binoy Kumar Saikia from Coal and Energy Research Group, CSIR North East Institute of Science and Technology, Jorhat, was named recipient.
  • Dr. Debdeep Mukhopadhyay, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, received the award under the engineering sciences category.
  • Mathematical sciences category:
  • Dr. Anish Ghosh, school of mathematics, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai.
  • Dr. Saket Saurabh, the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai, were announced winners.
  • Medical sciences:
  • Dr. Jeemon Panniyammakal, Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science Studies, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram.
  • Dr. Rohit Srivastava, department of biosciences and bioengineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.
  • Dr. Kanak Saha, from Pune's Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, received the award for physical sciences.
  • The Prize is bestowed on a person who, in the opinion of CSIR, has made conspicuously important and outstanding contributions to human knowledge and progress fundamental and applied, in the particular field of endeavour, which is his/her specialisation.

Koshyari Approves Ordinance to Restore OBC Reservation in Rural Local Bodies

  • Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari approved an ordinance to restore OBC reservation in rural local bodies.
  • The approval comes a day after the state Cabinet sent a revised proposal to the Governor's office after he raised issues over its previous proposal.
  • Last week, months after the Supreme Court scrapped OBC quota in local bodies, the Maharashtra Cabinet had decided to promulgate an ordinance to restore the quota, apart from reservations for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) within the 50 per cent reservation ceiling in rural local bodies.

Venkaiah Naidu Inaugurates Jodhpur City Knowledge and Innovation Cluster

  • Vice President of India, M. Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated the newly developed Jodhpur City Knowledge and Innovation Cluster (JCKIC) at IIT Jodhpur in the esteemed presence of Kalraj Mishra, Governor, Rajasthan, and Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Cabinet Minister in Ministry of Jal Shakti. The event was presided over by Dr. R. Chidambaram, Chairman, BoG, IIT Jodhpur.
  • JCKIC is an initiative of the Prime Minister's Science, Technology and Innovation Advisory Council (PM-STIAC) approved under the aegis of the Office of Principal Scientific Advisor, GoI initiated in 2020. The program approved six clusters at Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, Bhubaneswar, and Delhi. The project aims to create linkages among academic institutions, Research and Development institutes, National and State Research laboratories, Government agencies, and industries of the host city and its surroundings.

Delhi CM Kejriwal Launches One-stop App for Tourists

  • The Delhi government launched a mobile phone app, "Dekho Meri Dilli", that will act as a one-stop centre for tourism related information and tickets to all major tourist spots in Delhi, including popular market places and eateries.
  • The app, built by the Delhi government's tourism department, was launched by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on the occasion of World Tourism Day.
  • The "Dekho Meri Dilli" app offers six unique ways to discover Delhi and helps one plan a city tour ranging from half a day to six days. It also provides access to Google Maps to the required destination, and lists public and paid toilet facilities nearest to the user.
