Biden Administration Implores Iran to Return to Nuke Talks without Delay

  • The Biden administration is imploring Iran to quickly return to talks on its nuclear programme after a three-month hiatus caused by its government transition, warning that the window for negotiations may soon close.
  • A senior administration official said that U.S. patience is wearing thin and that further delays while Iran continues to expand its atomic capabilities could lead Washington and its partners to conclude a return to the landmark 2015 nuclear deal is no longer worthwhile.
  • In discussions with representatives from the remaining parties to the deal Britain, France, Germany, Russia, China and the European Union the official said that all of them had agreed on the importance of resuming the talks as soon as possible.

N. Korea Rejects South Korea's Calls for End-of-war Declaration

  • North Korea rebuffed South Korea's push for a declaration to end the 1950-53 Korean War as a way to restore peace, saying that such a step could be used as a "smokescreen covering up the U.S. hostile policy" against the North.
  • In a speech at the U.N. General Assembly earlier this week, South Korean President Moon Jae-in reiterated his calls for the end-of-the-war declaration that he said could help achieve denuclearisation and lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.
  • North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Ri Thae Song dismissed Mr. Moon's call as premature so long as U.S. policies were unchanged.

US Special Envoy to Haiti Resigns

  • The Biden administration's special envoy to Haiti has resigned, protesting inhumane large-scale expulsions of Haitian migrants to their homeland wracked by civil strife and natural disaster.
  • Daniel Foote was appointed to the position in July, following the assassination of Haiti's President. Even before the migrant expulsions from the small Texas border town of Del Rio, the career diplomat was known to be deeply frustrated with what he considered a lack of urgency in Washington and a glacial pace on efforts to improve conditions in Haiti.

  • Shareholders of RBL Bank approved the reappointment of Vishwavir Ahuja as the managing director and chief executive for the fourth term.
  • According to the results of the voting held at the annual general meeting, as much as 99.94% of shareholders who participated in the voting favoured the reappointment of Vishwavir Ahuja as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive oFficer (CEO) for the fourth term beginning June this year.

Mumbai, Bangalore and London among World's Top Start-up Hubs

  • London, Mumbai and Bangalore have featured among the world's top start-up hubs, according to a comprehensive ranking of international start-up hubs compiled by Startup Genome for its annual Global Startup Ecosystem Report 2021.
  • Despite Brexit and the coronavirus pandemic, London maintained its second-place ranking tied with New York for the second year in a row. Bangalore also ranked in the top 30 global tech hubs (#23 globally) and Delhi made it into the top 40 list, coming in at 36th.
  • Mumbai maintained its first position in the Emerging Ecosystems ranking (ecosystems in earlier stages of growth that have high potential to be global performers in the future), outperforming other fast-growing ecosystems in areas of funding, performance, market research, and talent.

Abhishek Verma Elected to World Archery's Athletes Committee

  • India's three-time World Cup gold medal-winning compound archer Abhishek Verma has been elected to World Archery's athletes' committee for a four-year term.
  • The 32-year-old was elected alongside reigning women's world champion Natalia Avdeeva of Russia after participants voted during the ongoing World Championships.
  • Verma, a former Asian Games gold-medallist, was the only male candidate but had to earn a majority while Avdeeva and Janine Meissner of Germany were the female candidates. The Russian received 69 per cent of the votes.
  • Verma, an Arjuna awardee, has won gold medals in the World Cups in Poland (2015) and Paris earlier this year. He also bagged the yellow metal in the team event in World Cup in Shanghai in 2018.

  • The new political dispensation in Punjab, headed by Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, has chosen Anirudh Tiwari as the new Chief Secretary. He was serving as the Additional Chief Secretary, Development.
  • Tiwari replaces Vini Mahajan, handpicked by former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh in June 2020. Mahajan was the first woman to be appointed to the post.

  • Fairooz Faizah is co-founder of Moner School which is an anonymous online platform active in the field of mental health. It works with youth to educate them about the importance of mental health care through training, workshops, and a 24/7 online mental health first aid service in Bangladesh.
  • The Changemaker Award is part of the Goalkeepers Global Goals award instituted by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to accelerate progress towards attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN.

US Returns 3,500-year-old Epic of Gilgamesh Tablet to Iraq

  • A $1.7 million, 3,500-year-old, clay tablet recounting a part of the world's oldest-known story was returned to Iraq by the U.S. after being seized from the company Hobby Lobby.
  • The so-called 'Gilgamesh Dream Tablet', inscribed with a portion of the 'Epic of Gilgamesh,' one of the world's oldest-known religious texts, was looted from an Iraqi museum after the start of the Gulf War in August 1990, before fraudulently entering the U.S. art market in 2007.
  • The arts and crafts retail chain Hobby Lobby purchased the tablet in a 2014 auction — intending to display it in its billionaire owner Steve Green's Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C. But the U.S. Department of Justice seized the object in 2019.
