Albania Approves New Female-dominated Cabinet

  • The Albanian parliament approved a cabinet dominated by women, following a 20-hour parliamentary debate.
  • The country's parliament voted 77-53 for the new cabinet under Prime Minister Edi Rama.
  • Of the 17 cabinet seats, 12 will be held by women.
  • The newly reelected premier said his new government "will enter history as the Cabinet with the highest number of women."
  • According to the latest UN figures, Albania now ranks fifth globally in women's representation in Cabinet.

Explorers add 8 Miles to World's Longest Known Cave System

  • The world's longest known cave system just set a new record after surveyors spent hours mapping an additional 8 miles (13 kilometers) of the passageways at Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky, United States.
  • The corridors at Mammoth Cave now measure a whopping 420 miles (676 km) in length, according to the National Park Service (NPS).
  • Mapping the cave system was a huge undertaking, carried out by volunteers at the Cave Research Foundation (CRF), a Kentucky-based nonprofit group, and other locals, including those from the Central Kentucky Karst Coalition.

Infosys Bags Five-year Deal from Texas-based Frost Bank

  • Infosys Ltd has bagged a five-year deal from Texas-based Frost Bank to provide strategic business consulting and digital capabilities that will enable the latter to offer mortgage loans along with its other consumer loan products.
  • Infosys will help design the bank's mortgage loan process landscape from origination to servicing, design the end-customer experience, and select the most effective technology platform to run and manage operations, while driving growth for its mortgage solutions over the next five years.
  • Infosys and Frost Bank will work together to create a human-centric, digital-first approach to customer mortgage loans that delivers superior borrower experience along with cutting-edge efficiency of operations. The implementation strategy will focus on accelerating launch of the new product, while also streamlining the mortgage value chain for Frost Bank by taking advantage of Infosys' access to global best practices and innovations.
 

Coal India Arm Eastern Coalfields Installs 250 kW Rooftop Solar Project

  • Eastern Coalfields Ltd (ECL), the West Bengal-located coal-producing subsidiary of Coal India Ltd, commissioned a 250-kW rooftop solar power project ramping up its total installed solar roof top capacity to 692 kW.
  • The implemented through the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), the newly installed 250 kW plant set up at ECL's headquarters in Sanctoria for captive consumption, has an average generation of 3.65 lakh units per annum.
  • This is sufficient to meet 12 per cent of the entire average annual power consumption of ECL's headquarters which is 30 lakh units.

SBI's Amit Saxena Joins RBI Innovation Hub as CTO

  • Global Deputy CTO of State Bank of India, Amit Saxena has joined RBI Innovation Hub as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO). The Reserve Bank announced that it would set up Reserve Bank Innovation Hub (RBIH) to promote innovation across the financial sector by leveraging on technology and creating an environment that would facilitate and foster innovation.
  • The RBIH shall create an ecosystem that would focus on promoting access to financial services and products. This will also promote financial inclusion.
  • The Hub will collaborate with financial sector institutions, the technology industry, and academic institutions and coordinate efforts for the exchange of ideas and development of prototypes related to financial innovations.
  • It would develop internal infrastructure to promote fintech research and facilitate engagement with innovators and start-ups.

Ramandeep Kaur Win Gold at Athletics Nationals

  • Punjab's Ramandeep Kaur won the gold medal in the women's 35km race walk event in the 60th National Open Athletics Championships.
  • She finished the race in 3 hours, 15 minutes, 17 seconds. Rajasthan's Sonal Sukhwal (3:18:35) and Uttar Pradesh's Priyanka Patel (3:27:56) finished second and third, respectively.
  • In the men's 35m race walk event, Uttar Pradesh's Ram Baboo (2:46:31) broke the national record. Gujarat's Sagar Satishchandra (2:53:43) was second, while Punjab's Surinder Singh (2:54:22) was third.
  • Railways' Karanveer Singh won the men's shot put gold with a throw of 18.46m. Punjab's Devinder Singh won silver, Rajasthan's Vanam Sharma finished third.
  • In mixed 4x400m relay, Punjab finished second, behind Tamil Nadu.

R.N. Ravi is T.N. Governor

  • R. N. Ravi was sworn-in as the Governor of Tamil Nadu, succeeding Banwarilal Purohit who has been shifted to Punjab.
  • Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, Sanjib Banerjee administered the oath of office to Ravi at an official ceremony held at the Raj Bhavan here. Chief Minister M K Stalin, his cabinet colleagues, Leader of Opposition K. Palaniswami and others participated in the swearing-in. Ravi was earlier appointed as the Centre's Interlocutor for the Naga peace talks.

Asics Names Joshna Chinappa as Brand Athlete

  • Japanese sports brand Asics has named Indian squash player Joshna Chinappa as their new brand athlete.
  • With this association, Asics hopes to inspire the next generation of athletes in the country and strengthen its customer base in India.
  • Asics entered the Indian market in 2015 and currently has over 55 stores across the country and sells on leading e-commerce platforms. The brand also has partnerships with several Indian athletes like Manika Batra, Bajrang Punia, Ravindra Jadeja, Sakshi Malik, Karman Kaur Thandi, Rohan Bopanna, T.Gopi among others.

Noted Theoretical Physicist Thanu Padmanabhan Passes Away

  • Noted theoretical physicist and recipient of Padma Shri award, Professor Thanu Padmanabhan died in Pune. He was 64.
  • A distinguished professor at the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Padmanabhan had conducted research on gravitation, structure formation in the universe and quantum gravity, he wrote over 300 papers in international journals and also authored several books.
  • The Kerala State Council for Science, Technology, and Environment had recently awarded Padmanabhan the 'Kerala Sasthra Puraskaram', a lifetime achievement award.

Algeria's Former President Bouteflika Dies

  • Former Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika died at 84, more than two years after he stepped down under pressure from mass protests and the army.
  • Bouteflika, a veteran of Algeria's war for independence, had ruled the North African country for two decades before his resignation in April 2019 after street demonstrations rejecting his plan to seek a fifth term.
  • After Algeria's independence from France in 1962, former President Bouteflika became Algeria's first foreign minister and an influential figure in the Non-Aligned movement.

Nepal Observes Constitution Day

  • Nepal Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba underlined the need to protect and implement the country's Constitution as the Himalayan nation observed its seventh Constitution Day.
  • Nepal celebrates the promulgation of its Constitution on September 19.
  • Deuba expressed pride over the promulgation of the Constitution six years ago by the representatives elected by the people.
  • "The Constitution of Nepal is a realisation of the dreams of the immortal martyrs and the aspirations of the Nepali people", said Deuba.

Delhi Boy Bags US National Science Bee Competition Award

  • Eight-year-old Delhi boy Advay Misra, who was named one of the 'brightest students in the world' by the John Hopkins University earlier this year, has now bagged the second position in the US National Science Bee 2021 competition.
  • The National Science Bee is a buzzer-based science competition for individual students, with questions ranging from biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, astronomy, mathematics, and other scientific fields. It includes a written qualifying exam and buzzer-based regional and national championships.

Rajasthan Passes Bill to Register Child Marriages

  • Rajasthan has passed a bill to amend an act on mandatory registration of marriages, including child marriages, with the opposition staging a walkout from the assembly. The assembly passed the Rajasthan Compulsory Registration of Marriages (Amendment) Bill, 2021, which amends the Rajasthan Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2009, and under which information on child marriage must be furnished by their parents or guardians within 30 days of the wedding.
  • Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators walked out of the House and questioned the need for the registration of child marriages and demanded the withdrawal of the bill. The Congress government in the state, however, said that the bill has been brought on the basis of a Supreme Court order.

THE World University Subject-Wise Rankings 2022

  • The Times Higher Education (THE) has released the World University Subject-Wise Rankings 2022 for physical sciences, life sciences, psychology, and clinical and health sciences. More than 1,600 universities from 99 countries have been ranked in at least one discipline. The University of California takes first place in the physical sciences category, while Harvard University is at the top of the life sciences category.
  • Several Indian universities and institutions have made it to the 2022 ranking list. India's JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, placed in Rank 93, is the only institution to debut in the top 100 for clinical and health sciences.

IIT-Delhi Researchers Develop Device to Generate Electricity from Raindrops

  • Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Delhi researchers have designed a device that can generate electricity from water drops, raindrops, water streams, and ocean waves which can be stored in batteries for further use.
  • The device has been developed using "Triboelectric Effect" and "Electrostatic Induction". It is called "Liquid-solid Interface Triboelectric Nanogenerator".
  • The device has a very simple structure consisting of specially designed nanocomposite polymers and contact electrodes and can generate a few Milliwatt (mW) power, which is sufficient to power small electronic devices like watches, digital thermometers, radio frequency transmitters, healthcare sensors, pedometers. When compared to conventional methods, such as the use of the piezoelectric effect, the present device can generate significantly more electricity.

NITI Aayog, Byju's Tie Up to Educate Children in 112 Aspirational Districts

  • Government think tank NITI Aayog has partnered with Byju's, the world's most valuable edtech company with a valuation of $16.5 billion, to provide children from 112 aspirational districts of the country free access to Byju's high-quality and tech-driven learning programmes.
  • Byju's Career-Plus programme, under Aakash plus Byju's, will identify and provide high-quality test prep coaching to 3,000 meritorious students of classes 11 and 12 who aspire to appear for NEET and JEE.

Jhumpa Lahiri's New Book 'Translating Myself and Others'

  • The Pulitzer Prize-winning noted fiction writer, Jhumpa Lahiri, is set to launch her new book titled 'Translating Myself and Others', which will highlight her work as a translator. The new book is planned to be out in Spring 2022. It will be a collection of essays that reflect Lahiri's experiences on the meaning of translation, translating her own writing, and writing across languages. The book will be published by Princeton University Press.
