Japan's popular vaccination minister, Taro Kono, is set to announce his candidacy for leader of the country's ruling political party and, by extension, its next Prime Minister.
Kono's decision to throw his hat in the ring for the leadership of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), left open by Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga's announcement last week he would step down, takes the number of candidates to three.
Kono appears to have an edge on former Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and former Internal Minister Sanae Takaichi in the race.
ICICI Lombard Ceases to be ICICI Bank Subsidiary Post Bharti AXA Merger
ICICI Bank said that ICICI Lombard General Insurance has ceased to be its subsidiary, as shareholding of the bank has come down to 48 per cent after the merger of Bharti AXA with the insurer.
ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company (ICICI Lombard) had in September 2021, allotted equity shares of the company to the eligible shareholders of Bharti AXA General Insurance Company (Bharti AXA), as per the scheme of arrangement between the two insurers.
With the merger of Bharti AXA with ICICI Lombard, both the former owners of Bharti AXA have exited the non-life insurance business.

CCI Approves Stake-buy in ONGC Tripura Power Company by GAIL
Fair trade regulator CCI gave its nod for acquisition of 26 per cent equity stake in ONGC Tripura Power Company by GAIL (India).
The stake is being acquired from IL&FS group companies IL&FS Energy Development Company Ltd and IL&FS Financial Services Ltd.
GAIL had participated in an open bidding process and had emerged as the highest bidder pursuant to the expression of interest issued for acquiring 26 per cent stake held by the IL&FS Group in ONGC Tripura Power Corporation Ltd.
Guinness World Records Recognise Ronaldo for Most Goals Scored
Portuguese captain Cristiano Ronaldo has broken the world record for most goals scored in men's international football. Ronaldo surpassed Iranian striker Ali Daei's long-held record of 109 international goals by scoring a brace against Ireland in a World Cup Qualifier. Ronaldo at 36 years of age is now a Guinness world record holder of most international goals of all time with 111 goals.
The Guinness world book of records has recognised Cristiano Ronaldo as a world record breaker for the most goals scored in international football (soccer) matches scored by an individual (male). Ronaldo achieved the feat scoring goals for his native Portugal between 2003 and 2021 proactively over a span of 18 years with a career still going strong as he looks to overcome yet another new challenge after his move away from Turin with a year left on his contract with the Bianconeri.
FIFA Unveils Biennial World Cup Plan
FIFA detailed its plan for reshaping international soccer around playing the men's World Cup every two years despite European opposition that could lead to a boycott.
Joined by retired greats, FIFA unveiled the proposal but the pushback from Europe was immediate as UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin confirmed it could launch a boycott by its teams which have dominated soccer's marquee event since Brazil won in 2002.
About 80 former internationals including World Cup winners went to Qatar for two days of FIFA-hosted talks and emerged with consensus for playing the tournament twice as often.

The Central Government has appointed G.S. Pannu as President of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal. G. S. Pannu is presently a Vice-President, ITAT, New Delhi and will be Officiating President of ITAT with effect from September 6, 2021, till the appointment of regular President.
Mr. Pannu was born on 01 Aug 1962 at Hoshiarpur (Punjab), he is a C.A and joined Government Service 14 September 2000. Presently posted as Vice-President at ITAT, New Delhi. Before joining ITAT, practised as a Chartered Accountant at New Delhi from 1986-2000.
Government Constitutes Task Force, Expert Committee on Coal-based Hydrogen Production
The Centre has constituted a task force and expert committee to prepare a road map for coal-based hydrogen production. This is aimed at contributing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's agenda of a hydrogen-based economy in a clean manner.
Ministry of Coal has constituted 2 Committees, one to oversee the program and another of experts to give guidance to the Ministry.
The task force has been constituted under the chairmanship of Coal Additional Secretary Vinod Kumar Tiwari. Its broad terms of reference include monitoring of activities towards achieving coal-based hydrogen production and usage and coordination with Coal Gasification Mission and NITI Aayog.
India's 1st Emergency Landing Facility on National Highway in Rajasthan
Union Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh and Union Highways Minister, Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the Emergency Landing Facility on a National Highway in Rajasthan.
This emergency landing facility has been constructed on the Satta-Gandhav stretch of National Highway (NH) 925A in Barmer, Rajasthan.
On the occasion, C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft of Indian Air Force (IAF) landed at the emergency field landing at the National Highway in Jalore, Rajasthan.
This is the first time; a National Highway will be used for emergency landing of IAF aircraft.
National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) developed a three kilometres section of the Satta-Gandhav stretch on NH-925A, under the supervision of IAF.
This facility will be used for road traffic flow on every day basis. However, during the operations of IAF, it will be used to facilitate the landing of all types of aircraft of IAF.
Mumbai Teen Named 2021 International Young Eco-Hero for Environment Project
Twelve-year old Ayaan Shankta, an environment activist, has been named as the 2021 International Young Eco-Hero in recognition of his efforts to solve tough environmental problems.
Ayaan Shankta won the third place in the 8-14 age category for his project Conservation and Rehabilitation of Powai Lake.
He is one of the 25 young environmental activists from across the globe honoured by the Action for Nature (AFN) as a 2021 International Young Eco-Hero, an award that recognizes eco-conscious youth aged 8 to 16 who are taking crucial steps to solve tough environmental problems.

British writer Susanna Clarke won the prestigious Women's Prize for Fiction for her mind-tweaking fantasy novel "Piranesi", a book that chronic illness made her fear she would never get to write.
Clarke was awarded the 30,000 pound ($41,000) prize for her second novel, which was published 16 years after her first, "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell," became a global best-seller.
Set in a magical alternate reality, "Piranesi" is narrated by a man living in a labyrinthine, statue-filled house.
Meghalaya's Whistling Village Nominated as 'Best Tourism Village' in India
The Ministry of Tourism has nominated Meghalaya's Kongthong village, also known as the 'Whistling village', for the World Tourism Organization's "Best Tourism Villages" award along with two other villages in the country.
The two other villages that have been nominated for UNWTO 'Best Tourism Villages' award are--Pochampally in Telangana and Ladhpura Khas in Madhya Pradesh.
The feature that makes Kongthon popular among tourists is its ancient tradition, where a mother calls her child by a tune instead of a name, like--Eeooow, Ooeeo, etc. In this village, people have two names - original name and a song name, which also has two versions - a short song and a long song.
The village, with its mesmerising beauty, attracts a number of tourists every year.
