Taliban Warn of Consequences if US Delays Withdrawal Process
Ahead of an emergency G7 meeting on Afghanistan, the Taliban warned that there would be consequences if the US and the UK sought an extension to the August 31 deadline for the US-led troop withdrawal from the war-torn country.
Britain is urging the US to extend its evacuation effort in Kabul beyond the current August 31 deadline, saying without the Americans other countries would have no choice but to stop their own operations to help people fleeing the Taliban takeover.

Unpopular Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga looks increasingly vulnerable to a challenge from within his party for the nation's top job after an ally's defeat in a local election seen as a referendum on Suga's Covid-19 response.
If Suga loses, he would join a long list of short-term premiers. He took over in September 2020 after Abe quit, citing ill health and ending a rare lengthy term of nearly eight years.
Suga, whose term as ruling Liberal Democratic Party leader ends next month, has seen his support slide from highs of about 70% to below 30%.
Stubble Burning: Air Quality Commission Asks States to Follow Protocol Developed by ISRO
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) asked Delhi and its neighbouring states to adopt a protocol developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for estimation of crop residue burning fire events. The protocol developed by the ISRO estimates these events using satellite data.
The CAQM asked the governments of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan to develop a time-bound comprehensive action plan in collaboration with stakeholder agencies responsible for monitoring and reporting of events related to agriculture residue burning. The CAQM is responsible for executing plans to prevent and control air pollution in the Delhi-NCR region and adjoining areas.
HCL Tech, Munich Re Sign Pact to Digitalise Workplace Services
HCL Technologies said it has signed a contract with Munich Re, one of the world's leading reinsurers, to create a next-generation digital workplace for its workforce across 40 countries.
Building on its strategic digital transformation partnership with Munich Re, HCL will now modernise and standardise workplace services for more than 16,000 employees in 40 countries. The Noida-based HCL will adopt a "global" strategy to support Munich Re's global workforce in multiple languages, including German, Spanish and Mandarin, from near-shore locations.
Munich Re selected HCL as its preferred partner due to the strength of the existing relationship and its proven track record creating a modern digital workplace for other leading German and global organisations.
LIC Launches Revival Policy
To provide continued risk cover to its policyholders, state-run insurer Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) launched a special campaign for the revival of lapsed individual policies.
Under the 'Special Revival Campaign', policies of specific eligible plans can be revived within five years from the date of the first unpaid premium, subject to certain terms and conditions.
The campaign has been launched from August 23, 2021 to October 22, 2021.
The insurer is offering concessions in late fee for plans other than term assurance and high risk plans, depending on the total premiums paid.
Govt. to Monetise 25 Airports over Four Years
The government is looking to monetise 25 AAI-managed airports, including Varanasi, Chennai, Nagpur and Bhubaneshwar, over the next four years, which could bring in investments worth Rs. 20,782 crore.
Further, divestment of Airports Authority of India's (AAI) residual stake in four airport JVs has also been considered under the national monetisation pipeline (NMP) unveiled. This includes the private sector operated airports in Mumbai (26 per cent stake), Delhi (26 per cent stake), Hyderabad (13 per cent stake), and Bangalore (13 per cent stake).
Under the ambitious NMP, the government has identified 13 sectors, including airports, which could monetise their brownfield infrastructure assets.
The airports sector contributes 4 per cent to the overall Rs. 6 lakh crore NMP unveiled by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
OneWeb, the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communications company backed by Bharti, announced the launch of 34 satellites by Arianespace from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in southern Kazakhstan.
The latest launch brings the company's total in-orbit constellation to 288 satellites. OneWeb is on track to commence service this year and deliver global service in 2022.
The move highlights the business momentum as the company prepares to introduce commercial service and focus on scaling to global service.
The satellites would form part of OneWeb's 648 LEO satellite fleet that aim to deliver high-speed, low-latency global connectivity.

Astronomers have discovered an enormous new filament of gas and dust hanging at the outer edge of our galaxy. Nicknamed 'Cattail,' the feature is not yet fully mapped, and the team who found it believe it could be a previously unknown arm of our Milky Way galaxy.
The Milky Way is a giant spiral galaxy, which has a central bulge surrounded by coiling arms containing stars, gas and dust. Our home galaxy has four known spiral arms — two major arms named Scutum-Centaurus and Perseus, and two minor arms squished between them named Norma and Sagittarius, according to NASA.
Afghanistan Cricket Board Gets New Chairman Post-Taliban Takeover
Azizullah Fazli has been renamed chairman of the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) in the first major development in the game's national governing body since the Taliban took control of the nation.
He will oversee ACB's leadership and course of action for the upcoming competitions.
Taliban members met ACB officials after which Fazli returned to the post he had vacated after Afghanistan came last in the 2019 World Cup in England.

Javelin Thrower Tek Chand has been named as India's flag bearer for the opening ceremony of Tokyo Paralympics 2020 after Mariyappan Thangavelu was identified as a close contact of a Covid Positive person in his flight to Tokyo.
Mariyappan Thangavelu will now have to quarantine as precautionary measure and miss the opening ceremony. He though has tested negative upon reaching the Olympic village, the Organizing Committee has advised not to make Mariyaapan participate in the Opening Ceremony.
Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, Tejashwi Yadav Meet PM Modi to Push for Caste Census
Stepping up their campaign for a caste-based census, a delegation of 10 parties from Bihar headed by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in support of the demand.
Kumar said that all parties from Bihar spoke in one voice on the need for a caste-based census, and asserted that statistics about different castes will help in formulating development schemes effectively as many of them have not benefitted so far in line with their actual population.
According to RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, who was part of the delegation, such a census was in national interest and will be a historic measure and help the poor and the most deprived sections of the society.
Kumar was joined by representatives of all major parties, including the BJP and Congress, as they submitted their demand to Modi.

Abhay Kumar Singh has been appointed as joint secretary in the newly created Ministry of Cooperation which was formed with an aim to strengthen the cooperative movement in the country.
Singh, a 2004-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Bihar cadre, has been appointed as joint secretary in the ministry for a combined tenure of seven years against the newly created post.
For the first time, the Indian Army has allowed Colonel-level rank for women officers in support arms of the force.
This is the first time that women officers serving with the Corps of Signals, Corps of Electronic and Mechanical Engineers (EME) and the Corps of Engineers have been approved to the rank of Colonel.
A selection board of the Indian Army cleared the way for the promotion of five women officers to Colonel (Time Scale) rank, post completion of 26 years of service.
The five women officers selected for Colonel (Time Scale) rank are Lt Col Sangeeta Sardana from the Corps of Signals, Lt Col Sonia Anand and Lt Col Navneet Duggal from the Corps of EME and Lt Col Reenu Khanna and Lt Col Ritcha Sagar from the Corps of Engineers.
Previously, promotion to the rank of Colonel was only applicable for women officers in the Army Medical Corps, Judge Advocate General and the Army Education Corps.
Navies of India and Philippines Conduct Military Drills
India carried out a naval exercise with the Philippines in the South China Sea, five days after it conducted a similar drill with Vietnam in the region that has been witnessing growing Chinese military expansionism.
While the Indian Navy deployed its guided missile destroyer INS Ranvijay and guided missile corvette INS Kora in the exercise, the Philippine Navy was represented by its frigate BRP Antonio Luna.
The Philippines government refers to the eastern parts of the South China Sea as the West Philippine Sea.
India and Qatar Conduct Joint Naval Exercise in Persian Gulf
The second edition of the joint naval exercise, Zair-Al-Bahr, between the Indian Navy and Qatar Emiri Naval Force (QENF) was conducted in the Persian Gulf.
This edition of the exercise included a three-day harbour phase followed by a two-day sea phase. The sea phase comprised of tactical maritime exercises involving surface action, anti-piracy exercises, air defence, maritime surveillance, boarding operations and SAR exercises.
In the sea phase of the exercise, the Indian Navy's Stealth Frigate INS Trikand, QENF's missile boats of Barzan and Damsah class, fast-attack crafts of MRTP 34 class and Rafale fighter aircraft participated.
India Showcased Indigenous Fighter Aircraft at 'ARMY- 2021' in Moscow
India pitched its indigenously built fighter aircrafts at the International Military-Technical Forum 'ARMY-2021' in Moscow.
DRDO from India's pavilion displayed advanced defence technologies and along with Indian Defence Industries like Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and Ordnance Factories.
Aircrafts like Anti-Tank Guided Missiles, LCA Tejas and Arjun Main Battle Tank (MK1A) were showcased at ARMY-2021.
Other aircrafts include- 8x-gun with longest range of 48 kilometers, Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AEW&C), Arjun Tank mark 1A, Surveillance Radar Rohini, Helina & Nag, Fire control radar, Akash missile and Carbine JVPC.
The government notified a significant amendment to adoption law mandating parents to intimate the Indian Mission in case they move to another country within two years of adoption of a child. The amendments were earlier cleared by the Cabinet to prevent trafficking.
Ram Nath Kovind Gives Assent to Amend General Insurance Law, OBC Bill
President Ram Nath Kovind has given assent to the General Insurance Business (Nationalisation) Amendment Act, 2021. The Act further amends the General Insurance Business (Nationalisation) Act, 1972. The President has also given his assent to the Constitution (One Hundred and Fifth Amendment) Act, 2021 empowering States to identify socially and educationally backward classes.
According to the statement of objects and reasons of the general insurance amendment bill, it seeks to remove the requirement that the central government should hold not less than 51 per cent of the equity capital in a specified insurer.
Former MP M. Ramadass has hailed the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research's (JIPMER) feat of ranking among the 100 best medical colleges in a recent global survey.
Mr. Ramadass said that CEO World Magazine has reported that based on Global Ranking criteria 100 best medical colleges of the world have been selected for the year 2021, among which six Indian medical colleges, including JIPMER, find a place.
JIPMER, securing 78.86 credit, occupies 59th position in the 100 best medical colleges of the world and fourth among Indian institutions. The AIIMS Delhi, Armed Forces Medical College Pune, CMC Vellore, Medical College Chennai and IMS BHU Varanasi are the other medical colleges to make to the list.
Cow Dung Products, Boosting Biogas Use IIT Delhi Bags National Competition Award
IIT Delhi won the Enactus India National Competition 2021 -- an annual event providing students a platform to showcase the work they do in communities. IIT Delhi bagged the win with two of its projects involving cow dung products and boosting biogas use.
The IIT Delhi team is now set to represent India at the World Cup in October 2021. This year, over 110 Enactus college teams in India worked on over 170 social entrepreneurship projects.
Over 4,000 students from more than 80 colleges across the country participated in Enactus India National Competition 2021.
IIT Delhi's Enactus team presented two projects of which the first one named 'Arth' involved using cow dung to create innovative eco-friendly products including logs, painted lamps, clocks -- all handmade by traditional Madhubani artists.
