Iran Not to Deliver Nuclear Activities' Record to IAEA

  • According to parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Iran will not deliver records of its nuclear activities to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) after a temporary understanding reached in January expired.
  • the Speaker added that the records are in possession of the Iranian authorities, and Tehran's Strategic Action Plan to Counter Sanctions (SAPCS) law is being "thoroughly" implemented.
  • The SAPCS act was passed by Parliament in December 2020, requiring among other measures the Iranian executive branch to stop implementing the Additional Protocol to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) by February 23, in case the sanctions imposed on the country by the US were not lifted.
  • The IAEA and Iranian officials reached a temporary understanding in February to keep the Agency's monitoring cameras under Tehran's supervision for a period of three months up to May 24, and deliver the records to the agency only after sanctions on the country are lifted.

Iraq, Egypt and Jordan Hold Summit

  • Egypt, Jordan and Iraq agreed to bolster security and economic cooperation at a tripartite summit that saw an Egyptian head of state visit Iraq for the first time in three decades.
  • The visits by Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Jordan's King Abdullah II came as Iraq seeks to move closer to Arab allies of the United States in the Middle East.
  • Iraq is also seeking to establish itself as a mediator between Arab countries and Iran, after reportedly hosting talks in April between Tehran and Riyadh.

Reports of LiDAR Survey of Water, Fodder Augmentation in Forest Areas

  • Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar released detailed project reports of the light detection and ranging (LiDAR) based survey of forest areas in 10 states.
  • The technology was used to develop a three-dimensional digital elevation model and imagery for recommending different types of soil and water conservation structures, according to the ministry.
  • The reports of 10 states - Assam, Bihar, Chhatisgarh, Goa, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Nagaland, and Tripura- were released at a virtual event.

IT, Financial Players most ESG Compliant; INFOSYS Tops CRISIL Rankings

  • Information technology and financial services players are the most environmental, Social, and governance (ESG) compliant companies in the country, and second-largest software exporter Infosys sc¬oring the highest on the key metric, according to scores prepared by Crisil.
  • Companies in oil and gas, chemicals, metals and mining, and cement companies have lower ESG scores, reflecting high natural-resource intensity, and thereby higher emission levels, extractive use of natural resources, potential adverse environmental and community impact, and generally more moderate levels of disclosure.
  • Scores for 225 companies computed by the agency pointed to scope for improvement on gender diversity as women's representation both on the boards and workforce remai¬ns low at 17 per cent, independent directors and reliance on renewable sources of power, among others.
  • Infosys tops the list, with a score of 79 on 100, while among the financial sector players, Kotak Mahindra Bank has a score of 75. There are many IT companies and also financial sector companies having an overall ESG score in the 70s.

WhatsApp Appoints Amazon Executive to Lead Payments Business in India

  • Facebook-owned messaging giant WhatsApp has appointed Manesh Mahatme to lead the growth of its Payments business in India. As Director of WhatsApp Payments-India, Mahatme will focus on enhancing the payments experience for users, scaling the service offering and work towards contributing to WhatsApp's vision of digital and financial inclusion in India.
  • Mahatme brings with him 17 years of experience in digital financial services and payments across Citibank, Airtel Money and Amazon. He joins WhatsApp from Amazon where he spent close to seven years as Director and Board member of Amazon Pay India and led product, engineering, and growth teams.

Commercial Bank of Kuwait Selects TCS BaNCS to Transform Treasury Ops

  • IT services major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), announced that Commercial Bank of Kuwait (CBK), one of the largest financial institutions in Kuwait, has selected TCS BaNCS for Treasury to manage risk better, enhance asset class coverage, and drive future growth.
  • CBK was looking for a modern, integrated treasury solution to help transform its treasury operations and offer new generation asset classes, enhance risk management, and ensure regulatory compliance. TCS BaNCS for Treasury will help CBK offer a wider range of cash and derivative treasury products, integrate various trading and messaging platforms, manage cash and positions in real time, and offer extensive accounting and reporting capabilities. This front-to-back, cross-asset solution will enable the bank to lay a firm foundation for digitization and expand its customer base, said a statement from TCS.

India's Rahi Sarnobat Wins Gold in Women's 25 m Pistol Event

  • India's Rahi Sarnobat won gold medal in women's 25 metres pistol event at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup.
  • Rahi shot 39 out of 50 in the 25m pistol final to win the first gold for India in the ongoing World Cup.
  • Manu Bhaker, the other Indian in fray, finished seventh in the eight-competitor final.
  • Mathilde Lamolle of France shot 31 in the final to win silver while Russia's Vitalina Batsarashkina took home bronze with a total of 28.

Modi Govt. Decides to Extend Tenure of Venugopal as A-G

  • The central government has decided to extend the tenure of K. K. Venugopal as the Attorney General by one year.
  • Though the attorney general usually has a tenure of three years, when his first term as A-G was to end last year, Venugopal had requested the government to give him a one-year tenure keeping in mind his advanced age.
  • Keeping in mind the high profile cases he is handling in the Supreme Court and his experience at the Bar, the government has decided to extend his tenure for one more year.
  • Venugopal took over as the Attorney General in July 2017. He succeeded Mukul Rohatgi as the top law officer of the Union government.

Justice Malimath is Acting Chief Justice of HP High Court

  • Justice Ravi Vijaykumar Malimath was appointed as the acting Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
  • As per a notification issued by the Department of Justice, Justice Malimath, the senior-most judge of Himachal Pradesh High Court, will perform the duties of the office of the chief justice of that high court with effect from July 1 consequent upon the retirement of Justice Lingappa Narayana Swamy, Chief Justice, Himachal Pradesh High Court.

BSP Pulls Out of UP Panchayat Election

  • BSP president Mayawati said that her party will not contest the zila panchayat chairpersons' elections so that it can focus on next year's assembly polls, drawing accusations from the Congress that she is pulling out to help the ruling BJP. She said that people wanted the Bahujan Samaj Party to form the government next year --- and it will go to the polls with the slogan that Uttar Pradesh must be 'saved'.

South Korea to Develop 'Iron Dome' Style Defence System

  • South Korea approved plans to pursue a $2.6-billion artillery interception system, similar to Israel's "Iron Dome", designed to protect against North Korea's arsenal of long-range guns and rockets.
  • Late last year the government's defence blueprint called for the development of a "Korean-style Iron Dome" that can defend Seoul and key facilities.
  • Through this project, it is expected that the ability to respond to the threat of enemy long-range artillery will be strengthened, as well as securing domestic technology and creating domestic jobs.

Ukraine, United States to Start Black Sea Military Drills

  • Ukraine and the United States started a military exercise involving more than 30 countries in the Black Sea and southern Ukraine, despite Russian calls to cancel the drills. Sea Breeze 2021 follows a rise in tensions between NATO and Moscow, which said last week it had fired warning shots and dropped bombs in the path of a British warship to chase it out of Black Sea waters off the coast of Crimea. Britain rejected Russia's account of the incident.
  • Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 and says it is Russian territory, but the peninsula is internationally recognised as part of Ukraine.
  • Sea Breeze 2021 will last two weeks and involve about 5,000 military personnel from NATO and other allies, and around 30 ships and 40 aircraft. U.S. missile destroyer USS Ross and the U.S. Marine Corps will take part.

  • Engineers India Limited (EIL) Chairman & Managing Director (CMD), RK Sabharwal has been honoured with the highest civilian award of Mongolia 'The Order of Polar Star' by his excellency. Journalist P. Sainath Wins Japan's Fukuoka Grand Prize

  • Journalist P. Sainath has been awarded the Fukuoka Grand Prize for 2021. The award, established by Japan's Fukuoka metropolis and the Fukuoka City International Foundation, is given to people and organisations for his or her work in preserving Asian tradition.

Telangana Govt. to Provide Financial Assistance to Beneficiaries under CM Dalit Empowerment Programme

  • In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Telangana government has announced that it will provide financial assistance of Rs. 10 lakh to the eligible Dalit beneficiaries under the Chief Minister Dalit Empowerment Programme.
  • With a budget of Rs. 1,200 crore for the first phase, the scheme will cover 100 families each from all the 119 Assembly constituencies in the state.
  • The amount will be transferred directly to the bank accounts of the selected Dalit beneficiaries as was done in the case of Rythu Bandhu Scheme.

  • IIT Mandi Post-Graduate Certificate in full stack development launched with the partnership of WileyNXT. Government to Give Tourist Visa Free of Charge

  • As part of plan to provide relief to the tourism industry, among the worst affected sectors by the pandemic, and to encourage travel activities, the government said that it would offer tourist visa free of charge till March 31, 2022.
  • As part of the financial relief package for the travel industry, finance minister Sitharaman announced that once visa issuance is restarted, the first 5 lakh tourists' visas will be issued free of charge.
  • The scheme will be applicable till March 31, 2022 or till 5,00,000 visas are issued, whichever is earlier. The benefit will also be available only once per tourist.

Seven Sites Including Venice May be Added to UNESCO in Danger List

  • Seven years after Venice was first threatened by UNESCO with being put on its list of World Heritage in Danger, the issue will come up again at its World Heritage Committee Meeting in Fuzhou, China, on 16-31 July.
  • The draft recommendation on Venice by the Unesco World Heritage Centre, ICOMOS and ICCROM, is that "the continued deteriorating effects of human intervention, combined with climate change on the vulnerable lagoon ecosystem, threaten to result in irreversible change.

Picasso Painting Found in Athens

  • A painting by Pablo Picasso that was stolen nine years ago during a heist at a Greek gallery has been recovered.
  • Police in Athens said that Picasso's Woman's Head had been found along with a 1905 painting of a windmill by Piet Mondrian.
  • Both were taken, along with a third artwork, during an elaborate 2012 heist at the Athens National Gallery.
  • The artworks were stripped from their frames in the early morning raid which only took minutes to carry out.
  • As per reports, a Greek man has been arrested after the art was found hidden at a gorge on the outskirts of the city.
  • The Picasso painting, a portrait of a woman in his signature cubist style, was gifted to the National Gallery by the artist himself back in 1949.
