Gati Ltd Looks to Shut Two More Businesses Post Cold Chain Exit

  • After exiting the cold chain business, express distribution company Gati Ltd is now looking to shed some more weight and is currently engaged in doing away with two more of its subsidiaries-- trading solution and freight forwarding businesses.
  • While the company is engaged in closing down the Gati Import Export Trading Limited subsidiary, for its freight forwarding business, Gati Limited is in search of a suitable buyer.

BharatPe Acquires Payback India

  • Merchant payment and lending service provider BharatPe acquired Payback India from American Express and ICICI Investments Strategic Fund.
  • This is the first-ever acquisition by BharatPe and will make Payback India a wholly-owned subsidiary of BharatPe.
  • Payback India - launched in 2010 - is a multi-brand loyalty programme with over 100 million members in the country. It has a network of more than 100 offline and online partners and allows its customers to earn and redeem points on every transaction at its partner merchant outlets.
  • The acquisition of Payback India is in line with BharatPe's strategy to build a robust and engaged network of over 20 million small merchants by 2023.

United States Tops Bitcoin Investment Gains in 2020

  • The US traders have benefited the most in Bitcoin Investment Gain in 2020, with a profit of $4.1 billion, according to the latest report by Chainalysis, a blockchain analysis company based in Manhattan, New York. Chinese traders stood second, with a profit of $1.1 billion. India has been ranked at 18th spot with a profit of $241 million, among the top 25 countries, in Bitcoin investment gains 2020.

Verizon Brings Commercially Available Private 5G Network in US

  • Verizon Business launched its first commercially available private 5G network in the US to offer businesses and government departments' high-speed indoor or outdoor connectivity.
  • Private 5G networks remove the need for businesses to jostle for speed with others on a public network and help enable data-intensive applications that use computer vision, augmented reality and machine learning to increase productivity.
  • Verizon has been trialing private 5G with several customers and has partnered with the likes of Microsoft and Amazon.
  • The private 5G network, managed by Verizon, would keep all cellular traffic on the premises of the customer to increase security, while authorised remote users can still access applications.

WTC Final: 10 Legends from Five Eras to be Inducted into ICC Hall of Fame

  • The ICC will induct 10 legends of the game into its illustrious Hall of Fame, with two players each from five eras, dating back to cricket's early days, joining an existing list of 93 of the world's greatest.
  • The global cricket body announced a special edition of the ICC Hall of Fame to coincide with the first-ever World Test Championship final, to be contested between India and New Zealand, from June 18 in Southampton.
  • The special intake will see two players from each of the following five eras join the ranks of the world's greatest players: Early Cricket Era (pre-1918), Inter-War Cricket Era (1918-1945), Post-War Cricket Era (1946-1970), ODI Era (1971-1995), Modern Cricket Era (1996-2016).

French Open 2021: Britain's Joe Salisbury Wins Mixed Doubles Title

  • Joe Salisbury became the first Briton to win the mixed doubles at the French Open in 39 years as he claimed a three-set win alongside Desirae Krawczyk.
  • Salisbury, 29, and American Krawczyk lost the first set but fought back to beat Russian duo Aslan Karatsev and Elena Vesnina 2-6 6-4 10-5.
  • The last Briton to win the title at Roland Garros was John Lloyd in 1982.
  • It is Salisbury's second Grand Slam title following his 2020 men's doubles victory with Rajeev Ram in Australia.

Gujarat Launches Web Portal, App to Help Unorganised Sector Workers

  • The Gujarat government launched a web portal and a mobile application to facilitate online registration of workers from the unorganised sector to give them smart cards for availing various welfare schemes.
  • The 'e-Nirman' portal and its mobile App were launched by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, a government release said, adding that 9.20 lakh workers from the unorganised sector were already registered and given U-WIN cards in the state.
  • Since workers have to forgo their day's work to get themselves registered after visiting the designated office, the state government decided to launch this online platform.
  • With the e-Nirman portal and mobile App, the government can monitor a worker's data in real-time and it will be directly linked to the 'CM Dashboard' application.

IAMAI Appoints Former SC Judge Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri as Chairman of OTT Players' Grievance Redressal Board

  • The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) has roped in former Supreme Court Justice (Retd.) Arjan Kumar Sikri to chair the Grievance Redressal Board (GRB), formed as a part of the Digital Publisher Content Grievances Council (DPCGC). The GRB will address content grievances pertaining to any of the DPCGC member's video streaming services.
  • Under Justice Sikri's leadership, the GRB will aim to provide independent adjudication on content grievances escalated to it. The members of the GRB include prominent personalities from the media and entertainment industry, online curated content providers, experts from various fields -- including child rights, women rights, and media laws.
  • IAMAI announced the formation of the Digital Publisher Content Grievances Council as an independent self-regulatory organization with an aim to provide a grievance redressal platform for Online Curated Content consumers. The DPCGC will empower consumers to make informed viewing choices and promote creative excellence, which are keys to the long-term success of the Indian entertainment industry.

  • IT major Wipro appointed Anup Purohit as its Chief Information Officer (CIO).
  • Anup has over 25 years of experience across banking and financial services, centered around innovation in digital banking, financial management, business solutions and service delivery, portfolio and program management, risk and controls and information security.
  • In his new role, as Chief Information Officer, Anup will report to Sanjeev Singh, Chief Operations Officer.
  • In his most recent role as CIO of Yes Bank, Anup was in charge of spearheading business technology transformation and digital innovation strategy with a relentless focus on bringing future technology into the bank's current technology stack.
  • Prior to that, Anup was associated with financial institutions such as RBL, Barclays and JPMC in leadership roles.

Tillotama Shome Wins Best Actor Award at UK Asian Film Festival

  • Tillotama won the award for her film Raahgir: The Wayfarers, which is directed by Goutam Ghose.
  • Shot in Jharkhand, the film also stars Adil Hussain and Neeraj Kabi. It revolves around three strangers, who live on a daily wage basis.
  • Raahgir: The Wayfarers was earlier screened at several film festivals -- including Busan International Film Festival, MAMI - Mumbai Film Festival, Shanghai International Film Festival and Cinemasia Film Festival.
  • Tillotama is best known for her intense roles in movies like Qissa, Shadows of Time, The Waiting City and Children of War.

All India Survey on Higher Education 2019-2020

  • Ministry of Education has released latest edition of "All India Survey on Higher Education" (AISHE) 2019-2020. As per the survey, number of institutions of national importance has increased to 135 which accounts for 80 percent in last five years.
  • According to survey, number of institutions of national importance has increased to 135 in 2020 from 75 in 2015.
  • Gender parity Index has also improved.
  • Number of PhDs has increased by 60 per cent since 2015. Number of students pursuing PhD in 2019-20 was 2.03 lakh while in 2014-15 it was 1.17 lakh.
  • Number of teachers stands at 15,03,156. Out of them, 57.5 percent are male while 42.5 percent are female.
  • Total enrolment in higher education is 3.85 crore in 2019-20, which was 3.74 crore in 2018-19 & 3.42 crore in 2014-15.
  • AISHE report is published by Ministry of Education since 2010-11. Survey provides key performance indicators on current status of higher education in India. Data is collected on parameters like number of teachers, student enrolment, examination results, programmes, education finance and infrastructure.

7,000-year-old Letter Seal Found in Israel

  • Archaeologists discovered Israel's oldest known seal impression, a device that stamps a pattern onto soft material such as clay or wax in order to seal an object. The tiny clay impression dates back 7,000 years and was likely used to seal and sign deliveries, as well as to keep storerooms closed.
  • The research team discovered the seal, along with nearly 150 others, during excavations that took place in Tel Tsaf, a prehistoric village in Israel's Beit She'an Valley. But while most of the other seals were just pieces of clay without any imprints, one had an impression with two distinct geometric shapes on them.
