China Leads Key Afghanistan Peace Talks

  • Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will host a trilateral meeting with his counterparts from Pakistan and Afghanistan on Thursday to discuss the Afghan peace and reconciliation process, as Beijing stepped up its diplomacy with the two nations in the wake of the US troops withdrawal from the war-torn country.
  • Wang will chair the China-Afghanistan-Pakistan trilateral foreign ministers meeting, the fourth such talks, via video link in which his counterparts from Pakistan and Afghanistan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Mohammad Haneef Atmar, would take part.
  • Last month, China offered to host peace talks between the Afghan government and Taliban militants to forge peace in view of the US troops withdrawal from Afghanistan by September.

US Ends Migrant Protection Protocols

  • United States has ended Migrant Protection Protocols which are also dubbed as "Remain in Mexico" policy.
  • This policy forced several Central American asylum seekers to wait in Mexico for US court cases.
  • Now, Joe Biden administration has paused this programme called known as the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) in January 2021.
  • Since January 2021, about 11,000 migrants have enrolled in it and have been allowed to enter US to seek asylum claims.
  • However, Republicans have criticised reversal of this policy, because it encouraged huge migrant arrivals at US-Mexico border.
  • The international border separating Mexico and United States extends from Pacific Ocean in west to Gulf of Mexico in east. It traverses different terrains, from urban areas to deserts. This border is considered as most frequently crossed border across the world with about 350 million documented crossings each year.

Palestine Flays India's Abstention at UNHRC

  • Palestine expressed disappointment over India's abstention from a UN Human Rights Council vote that called for a probe into Gaza violence. Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Malki wrote to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressing concern over the position taken by India at a special session of the UNHRC.
  • India's abstention did not eventually matter as the resolution was passed with 24 countries voting in favour and nine against. The Palestinians felt disappointed over the Indian stand as they felt the resolution was the product of extensive multilateral consultations.

Bharti Airtel's Subsidiary Sells Tower Portfolio in Tanzania

  • Airtel Africa announced the sale of the tower portfolio belonging to Airtel Tanzania for about USD 175 million (Rs. 1,279.6 crore).
  • The deal marks the latest strategic divestment of the group's tower portfolio as it focuses on an asset-light business model and on its core subscriber-facing operations.
  • Airtel Africa is a provider of telecommunications and mobile money services with a presence in 14 countries across Africa.
  • Airtel Africa announced "the sale of the tower portfolio belonging to Airtel Tanzania to a joint venture company owned by a wholly-owned subsidiary of SBA Communications Corporation, a leading global independent owner and operator of wireless communications infrastructure, as majority owner, and by Paradigm Infrastructure Limited, a UK company focused on developing, owning and operating shared passive wireless infrastructure in selected growth markets.
  • The tower portfolio in Airtel Tanzania comprises about 1,400 towers that form part of the group's wireless telecommunications infrastructure network.
  • As per the terms of the deal, the group's subsidiary Airtel Tanzania will continue to develop, maintain and operate its equipment on the towers under a separate lease arrangement with the purchaser.

Tata Power Solar Gets Order from NTPC

  • Tata Power Solar has got a letter of award for an order worth Rs. 686 crore from state-owned power giant NTPC, according to a statement.
  • Tata Power Solar, India's largest integrated solar company and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Power, has received a letter of award (LoA) to build 210 megawatt peak (MWp) of solar PV projects for NTPC.
  • The commissioning deadline has been set as November 2022.
  • With this addition, the order pipeline of Tata Power Solar stands at about 2.8 gigawatts (GW) with an approximate value of Rs. 13,000 crore, thereby cementing its position as India's leading solar EPC (engineering-procurement-construction) player.

Nayara Energy Selects Hughes India to Connect Retail Outlets

  • Satellite services provider Hughes Communications India won a contract from oil retailer Nayara Energy to install, integrate and manage a satellite network solution across 3,500 retail outlets.
  • Hughes already connects more than 4,000 Nayara locations.
  • The new, five-year contract, nearly doubles the HughesON-managed deployment, making it the largest single satellite-based network in India's retail petroleum sector.

Space Agreement between New Zealand and NASA

  • New Zealand has become the latest country to sign "space agreement with NASA" with the objective of boosting nascent space industry of New Zealand.
  • New Zealand is the eleventh signatory to Artemis Accords.
  • Artemis Accords is a blueprint for space cooperation and supporting NASA's plan to return humans to moon by 2024. It also supports NASA's plan of launching historic human mission to Mars.
  • New Zealand wants to ensure, future space exploration is conducted in a safe, sustainable and transparent manner in accordance with international law. New Zealand is also interested in ensuring that minerals taken from moon or elsewhere in space are used sustainably.
  • Artemis accords are an international agreement and American-led effort which seeks to relaunch humans to Moon by 2024. Agreement was signed by governments participating in Artemis programme with the objective of expanding and deepening space exploration. It was drafted under the aegis of NASA. It provides a framework for cooperation in civil exploration and peaceful use of Mars, Moon and other astronomical objects. The accord was signed in October 13, 2020.

The State of Ransomware 2021 Report

  • Global cybersecurity firm, Sophos, published it "the State of Ransomware 2021 report'. It found, 68% of Indian organisations were by ransomware in last 12 months.
  • India is one among most affected countries with respect to ransomware attacks.
  • India tops list of top 30 countries for ransomware attacks.
  • Ransomware attacks have significant financial repercussions. The survey highlights, average total cost of recovery from a ransomware attack was more than double in a year. It increased from $7,61,106 in 2020 to $1.85 million in 2021 across the world. However, In India, recovery cost from tripled in a year, $1.1 million in 2020 to $3.38 in 2021.

Justice Arun Mishra Joins as New NHRC Chairperson

  • Former Supreme Court judge justice Arun Mishra took charge as the new chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission.
  • Justice Mishra, who had created a flutter after praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi at an event last year, is the eighth chairperson of the commission.
  • Justice Mishra is also the first non-CJI to be appointed to the NHRC chief post since the amendment of the Protection of Human Rights Act in 2019.
  • The post of NHRC chairperson was lying vacant after justice H L Dattu, a former Chief Justice of India (CJI), completed his tenure early December last year.

Government Prohibits IB, CBI, Income Tax, CRPF Officers from Publishing Material without Prior Permission

  • Government servants having worked in any intelligence or security-related organisations have been directed through a notification not to make any publication without prior clearance from the competent authority.
  • The Departments covered under the notification by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) include RAW, IB, DRI, CEIB, ED, NCB, ARC, Special Frontier Force, BSF, CRPF, ITBP, CISF, NSG, Assam Rifles, SSB, DG Income Tax (investigation), NTRO, FIU, SPG, DRDO, Border Road Development Organisation, NSC, CBI, NIA and Natgrid.
  • These rules are part of the Central Civil Services (Pension) Amendment Rules 2020, notified on May 31, 2021.
  • The material that cannot be published by former government servants includes the domain of the organisation including any reference or information about any personnel and his designation and expertise or knowledge gained by virtue of having worked in that organisation.

Cabinet Approves MoC between India and Japan on Sustainable Urban Development

  • Union Cabinet approved Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on Sustainable Urban Development between India and Japan by suspending the existing MoU of 2007 on Urban Development.
  • To implement and strategise programmes on cooperation under MoC, a Joint Working Group (JWG) will be constituted. JWG will meet once in a year in Japan as well as in India, alternately. Cooperation under MoC will continue for a period of 5 years, which can be auto-renewed for 5 years at a time.
  • It will promote strong, deep and long-term bilateral cooperation with respect to Sustainable Urban Development between India and Japan. It is expected to create employment opportunities in listed areas of sustainable urban development including Urban Planning, affordable housing, rental housing, Smart Cities Development, Urban Flood Management, water management, Sewerage & Waste Water Management etc.

China Creates Defence System along LAC

  • In the move of strengthening its position along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), People Liberation Army (PLA) of China has created an integrated or combined air defence system comprising air force and army for its western theatre command. This wing is involved in operations along LAC.
  • This system was put through paces during exercise conducted recently at an unknown location under western theatre command. In the exercise, army elements were jointly training with air force while air force was commanding and controlling it. About 10 PLA army units under western theatre command have been integrated in reporting chain to share inputs on early warning and exercise participation.

Vice-Admiral Ravneet Singh Assumes Charge as Deputy Chief of Naval Staff

  • Vice-Admiral Ravneet Singh, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), and Nausena Medal (NM) holder, assumed charge as the Deputy Chief of Naval Staff.
  • According to the Defence Ministry, he was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1983, and specialised in aviation. The Flag Officer is a qualified flying instructor with Master Green instrument rating.
  • He has held various challenging Staff, Command, and Diplomatic assignments during his distinguished naval career, and has had wide-ranging experience onboard diverse platforms.

Govt. Approves Model Tenancy Act

  • The Union Cabinet approved the Model Tenancy Act under which separate rent authorities, courts and tribunals will be set up in districts to protect the interest of both the owner and tenant.
  • For residential premises, tenants will have to submit security deposit of maximum two months' rent, while in case of commercial property, six months' rent will have to be deposited.
  • States and union territories can adopt the Model Tenancy Act by enacting fresh legislation or they can amend their existing rental laws suitably.
  • The Act mandates for written agreement for all new tenancies, which will have to be submitted to concerned district 'Rent Authority'.

Byju's and Google Tie Up to Offer Learning Solution to Schools

  • Edtech company Byju's, which has 95 million registered students on its flagship learning app, has partnered with tech firm Google to aid the continuity of online learning for both teachers and students. This integration of Google Workspace for Education with Byju's will offer a collaborative and personalised digital platform for classroom organisation, available for free to participating educational institutions.
  • With a commitment to digital education, Google Workspace for Education will combine Byju's pedagogy to empower educators in their journey towards digital transformation. Built on the Vidyartha platform, this partnership will provide direct access to Byju's extensive math and science pedagogy. This includes visually-rich learning solutions, including chapter-wise slides, readymade assignments, data banks, summary docs, handouts, tests, and more.

Gujarat to Grant Centre of Excellence Status 7 Universities

  • Gujarat government is all set to grant Centre of Excellence (CoE) status to seven private universities in state.
  • In-principal approval was given by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. University Grants Commission (UGC) encourages higher education institutions to attain excellence in specific areas of academic as well as research work. CoE can an institute of strategic or security-relate importance, notified by state government. Institution of Eminence can also be given CoE tag.
  • The seven Universities are: CEPT University, Nirma University, Pandit Deendayal Energy University, Ahmedabad University, Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology (DAIICT), Marwadi University and Charotar University of Science & Technology.
  • CoE tag to universities will help in bringing quality education and give them an international touch. Tag will also boost research, innovation and establish a culture of creating start- ups.

IIT-Ropar Develops 'AmbiTAG' India's First Indigenous Temperature Data Logger

  • Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar (IIT Ropar) in Punjab has developed a first-of-its-kind IoT device, "AmbiTag" that records real-time ambient temperature during the transportation of perishable products, vaccines and even body organs and blood. That recorded temperature further helps to know whether that particular item transported from anywhere in the world is still usable or perished because of temperature variation. This information is particularly critical for vaccines including the Covid-19 vaccine, organs and blood transportation.
  • Shaped like a USB device, AmbiTag continuously records the temperature of its immediate surroundings from -40 to +80 degrees in any time zone for a full 90 days on a single charge.
  • Most of the similar devices available in the international market record data only for a duration of 30- 60 days.
  • The recorded data can be retrieved by connecting the USB with any computer. The device has been developed under Technology Innovation Hub – AWaDH (Agriculture and Water Technology Development Hub) and its Startup ScratchNest. AWaDH is a Govt of India project.

Belgian Experts Frustrated at Lack of Initiative from Museums and Government

  • An independent panel of scholars and experts has called on Belgian museums to restitute artefacts acquired in a colonial context and urged the government to create a neutral commission to evaluate restitution requests, an independent institute for provenance research, and a new law to facilitate returns.
  • Their proposals are similar to guidelines put forward in Germany and the Netherlands. But there is one big difference—in those countries, the guidelines were commissioned and adopted by the authorities. In Belgium, no official proposals on decolonising museums and restituting objects looted in the colonial era have so far been presented.

Book 'Savarkar: A Contested Legacy (1924-1966)' by Vikram Sampath

  • Decorated historian and author Vikram Sampath has come out with the second and concluding volume of the book on the life and works of Veer Savarkar titled "Savarkar: A contested Legacy (1924-1966)". The book will hit the stands on July 26, 2021, under the publication of Penguin Random House India.
  • The first volume, "Savarkar: Echoes from a Forgotten Past" was released in 2019 and covered Savarkar's life from his birth in 1883 to his conditional release from prison in 1924. The second volume will bring to light the life and works of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, from 1924 to 1966, the year he died.

Mumbai's Civic-run Zoo to Expand for New Animals

  • The civic-run Byculla Zoo in Mumbai is set to expand by 10 acres to house new enclosures for several exotic species of animals that will be brought to the facility in the next few years, officials said on Monday.
  • One of the city's most patronised venues, officially called the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan, it is currently spread over 53 acres and the extra 10 acres have already been procured for a third phase of expansion, they added. A tender had been floated for the expansion work that will see the construction of 15 enclosures to house animals like the giraffe, white lion, black jaguar, chimpanzee, ostrich, ringtail lemur and cheetah etc.
