Biden's USD 6 Trillion Budget

  • President Joe Biden unveiled a USD 6 trillion budget for next year that's piled high with new safety net programs for the poor and middle class, but his generosity depends on taxing corporations and the wealthy to keep the nation's spiking debt from spiralling totally out of control.
  • This year's projected deficit would set a new record of USD 3.7 trillion that would drop to USD 1.8 trillion next year — still almost double pre-pandemic levels. The national debt will soon breach USD 30 trillion after more than USD 5 trillion in already approved Covid-19 relief. As a result, the government must borrow roughly 50 cents of every dollar it spends this year and next.

UK PM Boris Johnson Marries Fiancée

  • British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his fiancée Carrie Symonds married in a small private ceremony in London, his Downing Street office.
  • Johnson, 56, and 33-year-old Symonds, an environmental advocate, announced their engagement in February 2020.
  • The marriage is Symonds' first and Johnson's third. He has at least five other children from previous relationships.

US Senate Confirms Christine Wormuth as First Female Army Secretary

  • Christine Wormuth was confirmed unanimously by the Senate to be the first female secretary of the Army. Wormuth, who led President Joe Biden's transition team at the Pentagon, got an overwhelmingly warm reception from members of the Senate Armed Services Committee during a hearing this month. Her confirmation sets her up as one of the more powerful officials in a defence establishment long dominated by men. She is the second woman named to a top Pentagon role by Biden. The deputy secretary of defence is Kathleen Hicks.

NGT Forms Panel to Probe Violation of Environmental Norms by JSW

  • The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has formed a five-member committee to probe into a plea alleging violation of environmental norms in running the industrial operations by Jindal Steel Works Limited at some villages in Raigarh district of Maharashtra.
  • A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice A. K. Goel asked the committee to look into the issues including compliance of the Water and Air Acts and Hazardous Waste Management Rules, destruction of mangroves and damage to agriculture, if any.
  • The committee would be headed by an officer of the rank of joint secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), nominated by the secretary MoEF and also comprise officials from the Central Pollution Control Board, IIT-Mumbai, district magistrate of Raigarh and members of the state pollution control board.

DoT Allocates Spectrum to Telcos for 5G Trials

  • The Department of Telecom has allocated spectrum to telecom operators to start 5G trials in the country, sources said. "Telecom operators have been allocated spectrum in 700 Mhz band, 3.3-3.6 gigahertz (Ghz) band and 24.25-28.5 Ghz band across various locations.
  • Earlier in May 2021DoT had approved applications from Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and MTNL for conducting 5G trials without using technologies from Chinese companies.
  • DoT had approved trials of 5G with Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung and C-DOT. Jio will conduct trials using its indigenous technology.

IBF to be Renamed as IBDF

  •  Apex body of broadcasters, Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) has extended its purview to cover digital streaming platforms. Also, it will be renamed as Indian Broadcasting and Digital Foundation (IBDF).
  • Extended coverage will bring broadcasters and OTT (over-the-top) platforms, under one roof. Decision was taken in the view of substantial jump in their viewership base during covid-19 pandemic.
  • To regulate them, IBDF is considering to form a new wholly-owned subsidiary which will handle all matters of digital media. A self-regulatory body called 'Digital Medic Content Regulatory Council (DMCTC)' will also be established for digital OTT platforms.
  • IBF is a unified representative body of television broadcasters, established in 1999. About 250 Indian television channels are associated with it. IBF act as spokesman of India Broadcasting Industry. It is the parent organisation of Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC), established in up 2011, to examines content-related complaints. IBF will now be renamed as "Indian Broadcasting and Digital Foundation" to bring digital OTT platforms under its purview.

Banks Begin Process of Restructuring of Loans up to Rs. 5 crore

  • To provide support to small businesses hit by the second coronavirus wave, banks have initiated the process of restructuring of loans up to Rs. 25 crore in line with the Covid-19 relief measures announced by the Reserve Bank earlier this month.
  • Many lending institutions have got board approval for the resolution framework and eligible borrowers are being contacted.
  • For example, the Bank of India has sent messages to its eligible customers to submit their willingness to debt recast online.

OneWeb Successfully Launches 36 more Satellites

  • Bharti Group backed OneWeb, the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communications company, confirmed the successful launch of 36 satellites by Arianespace from the Vostochny Cosmodrome. This launch brings OneWeb a step closer to completing its 'Five to 50' ambition and the start of commercial service by the end of the year.
  • This latest successful launch brings OneWeb's total in-orbit constellation to 218 satellites.
  • These will form part of OneWeb's 648 LEO satellite fleet that will deliver high-speed, low-latency global connectivity.
  • There is now only one launch to go until the company has the satellites required to enable its connectivity solution to reach all regions north of 50 degrees latitude by June 2021.
  • The latest lift-off occurred on May 28. OneWeb's satellites separated from the rocket and were dispensed in nine batches over a period of 3 hours 52 minutes with signal acquisition on all 36 satellites confirmed.

International Astronomical Union Approves Chinese Names to Identify Areas on Moon

  • The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has approved eight Chinese names for features around the area on the Moon where China's spacecraft Chang'e-5 probe landed last year to collect samples from the lunar surface and return to Earth.
  • The Chang'e-5 space mission is China's maiden attempt to retrieve materials from an extra-terrestrial body. It was launched on November 24 last year 2020.
  • It was the first attempt to bring the lunar samples in over 40 years after the US sent astronauts to the Moon to collect samples.
  • The IAU Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature has approved eight names for features on the Moon in the vicinity of the Chang'e-5 landing site: Mons Hua, Mons Heng, Pei Xiu, Shen Kuo, Liu Hui, Song Yingxing, Statio Tianchuan, and Xu Guanqui. Pondy BJP Team Meets Nadda over Govt. Expansion

  • A two-member team from the Puducherry unit of the BJP called on party's national president JP Nadda in Delhi today to end the stalemate in the expansion of the AINRC-led NDA government. The team comprised legislature party leader A Namassivayam and state general secretary `Embalam` R Selvam.
  • Only the AINRC leader, N Rangasamy, assumed office of CM after he was sworn in at a simple ceremony in Raj Niwas here on May 7. The formation of a full-fledged ministry faced a near-crisis with the BJP reportedly insisting that the posts of Speaker and Deputy CM be allotted to the party besides a ministerial post. Rangasamy is reportedly not inclined to accept the demand.

Centre Invites Applications for Citizenship

  • Central Government has invited Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan to apply for citizenship in India under the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.
  • Several migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan have been residing in 13 districts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and Chhattisgarh. In this regard, Union Home Ministry has issued notification to implement order under Citizenship Act 1955.
  • The act, passed on December 11, 2019, amended "Citizenship Act, 1955". It provided ways for persecuted religious minorities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan belonging to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis or Christians; to get Indian Citizenship. This is the first law which used religion as criteria for citizenship in India. It has also relaxed "residence requirement" for naturalization for these migrants to 6 years from 12.

DG NCC Mobile Training App 2.0 Launched

  • Defence Secretary, Dr Ajay Kumar, launched the "DG NCC Mobile Training App 2.0" to provide basis information and training material to NCC Cadet.
  • App will assist in conducting online training to NCC cadets amid COVID-19 pandemic. It aims to provide basic information related to NCC and entire training material including, Syllabus, Training Videos etc on single platform. Cadets can attend online training and appear in certificate exams through this app which in turn help to prevent their academic year. App was developed in line with 'Digital India' vision.
  • NCC is the youth wing of Indian Armed Forces, headquartered in New Delhi. School and college students can join on voluntary basis. It is a Tri-Services Organization comprising of Army, Navy and Air Wing. NCC groom the youth of country into disciplined and patriotic citizens.
  • NCC was created by the Act of 1950. It was established on the line of 'University Corps' created under Indian Defence Act 1917, to fill the shortage in Army.

Maharaja of Erstwhile Kutch State Dies

  • The Maharaja of Kutch, Maharrao Pragmalji III, the titular ruler of the Jadeja dynasty of the erstwhile Kutch state, died of complications related to Covid-19.
  • The Maharaja had no children and with his death, the throne of the ruler of the erstwhile state remains vacant as he did not name an heir apparent.
  • Pragmalji III died and his last rites were conducted at Chhaterdi in Bhuj, the royal resting place, with Covid-19 guidelines. He was anointed as Maharrao and renamed Pragmalji III at a ceremony on October 17, 1991, after his father's death.

  • The second BRICS Sherpas' and Sous Sherpas' meeting was conducted to discuss preparations for scheduled meeting of BRICS Foreign Ministers on 1st June.
  • The BRICS Sherpas' and Sous Sherpas meeting was convened under India's Chair-ship from 25th to 28th of May. During the meeting BRICS partners negotiated key deliverables for India's char-ship at BRICS 2021. They also negotiated including outcome documents for Foreign Ministers' meeting.

Centre Launches YUVA Scheme to Mentor Budding Writers

  • The government launched YUVA — Prime Minister's Scheme For Mentoring Young Authors, an author mentorship programme to train 75 selected young and budding authors (below 30 years of age) with an aim to promote reading and writing.
  • The launch of YUVA (Young, Upcoming and Versatile Authors) is in tune with PM's vision to encourage young authors to write about India's freedom struggle, the Education Ministry said.
  • In the January-31 edition of his 'Mann ki Baat', the PM had called upon youngsters to write about freedom fighters and their saga of valour as a way to celebrate 75 years of Independence.

Louvre Gets its First Female Leader in 228 Years

  • Historian Laurence des Cars becomes the first female president of Musée du Louvre, the world's largest museum in Paris, France in 228 years. She was appointed as the first female president of Musée du Louvre by the President of France, Emmanuel Macron.
  • Laurence des Carsis currently heading the Musée d'Orsay, the Paris landmark museum which is dedicated to 19th-century art. On September 1, 2021, she will replace the current president, Jean-Luc Martinez, who had been heading the Orsay museum for the past eight years.
