China Denounces US Appeal for Taiwan to Participate in WHO Meeting

  • China's government criticised US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday for urging the World Health Organisation to invite Taiwan, the island democracy claimed by Beijing as part of its territory, to participate in a meeting this month.
  • Blinken's statement Friday adds to a similar joint appeal by foreign ministers of the Group of Seven major economies this month in London. That irked the Communist Beijing government, which insists Taiwan has no right to conduct foreign relations or join global bodies.
  • Blinken's appeal seriously violates the one-China principle' and joint US-Chinese declarations, said a Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Hua Chunying. China firmly deplores and rejects it.
  • Taiwan split with the Chinese mainland in 1949 after a civil war. The two sides have extensive trade ties but no official relations.
  • The US and other major governments have no official ties with Taiwan, but Washington and some others have expressed growing support for Taiwan during the coronavirus pandemic and in response to Beijing's increasing assertiveness abroad.

Nepal PM Oli Loses Vote of Confidence

  • Nepal's embattled Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli lost a crucial trust vote in the House of Representatives on Monday, pushing the Himalayan nation into further political turmoil amidst a record surge in Covid-19 cases.
  • Oli lost the vote of confidence motion, days after the Nepal Communist Party Maoist Centre led by Pushpakamal Dahal 'Prachanda' withdrew its support, reducing the government to a minority.
  • Oli, who decided to seek the trust of the 275-member House on his government, managed to garner only 93 votes, which fell short of 43 votes to reach the 136-mark and win the vote of confidence during a special session of the lower house.
  • A total of 124 members voted against the confidence motion while 15 members stayed neutral, Speaker Agni Sapkota announced. The session was attended by 232 lawmakers.

Saudi Arabia Calls for Dialogue between India and Pak. to Resolve their Issues

  • Saudi Arabia has emphasised the importance of dialogue between Pakistan and India to resolve their outstanding matters, including the Kashmir issue.
  • Pakistan Foreign Office released a joint statement agreed between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia after Prime Minister Imran Khan held high-level talks with Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.
  • Khan was on an official visit to Saudi Arabia from May 7-May 9.
  • The Crown Prince "welcomed the recent understanding reached between the military authorities of Pakistan and India regarding ceasefire at the Line of Control (LoC), which is based on a 2003 understanding between Pakistan and India".

Sitapati Steps Down as HUL's Executive Director

  • Sudhir Sitapati executive director of the foo¬ds and refreshment business at Hindustan Unilever (HUL), has stepped down from his position.
  • Srinandan Sundaram, currently executive director (customer development) at HUL, will succeed Sitapati effective July 1.
  • Sitapati joined HUL as a management trainee in 1999. He was appointed executive director, foods and refreshment in July 2018 and was involved in the merger of GSK Consumer's nutrition business into HUL. Prior to this, he was regional category vice president, refreshment (South Asia & Africa), Unilever.

Govt. Names New Chairman of Privatisation-bound Bharat Petroleum Corporation

  • Government-headhunter PESB selected the next chairman and managing director of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), in signs that the privatisation of the state-owned oil refining and marketing firm may be delayed.
  • The government had kept the position of chairman and managing director vacant after D Rajkumar retired in August last year. It was thought that the government wants the new management to be named after the new management takes over after the privatisation of BPCL.
  • The newly revamped Public Enterprise Selection Board (PESB) interviewed prospective candidates and selected Arun Kumar Singh for the position.
  • Singh is currently Director (Marketing) of BPCL.

Blackstone Buys Embassy Industrial Parks

  • In one of the largest logistics deals in the country in recent years, US-based private equity fund manager Blackstone Group has bought Embassy Industrial Parks from Warburg Pincus and Embassy Group. Though Blackstone did not disclose the deal value, sources in the industry pegged the transaction at an enterprise value of Rs. 5,250 crore.
  • Embassy Industrial Parks comprises 22 million square feet of modern logistics and warehousing facilities, as well as yet-to-be-built assets, located across Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, and Pune. These are leased to leading e-commerce and retail players.
  • Warburg Pincus had a 70 per cent stake in the $250-million joint venture (JV) set up in 2015, while Embassy had 30 per cent.
  • With the latest deal, Blackstone will have a portfolio of over 40 million sqft of developed and yet-to-be-developed assets with its partners Hiranandani and Allcargo.

NASA Spacecraft Starts Trip Back to Earth after Collecting Asteroid Samples

  • A NASA spacecraft, which scientists believe has collected samples from an asteroid, began its two-year journey back to Earth.
  • NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft is attempting to complete a mission to visit Bennu, a skyscraper-sized asteroid some 200 million miles (320 million km) from Earth, survey the surface, collect samples and deliver them back to Earth.
  • Staff celebrated at the OSIRIS-REx control room in Colorado as the space vehicle pushed away from the asteroid, whose acorn-shaped body formed in the early days of our solar system.
  • OSIRIS-REx arrived at Bennu in 2018.
  • The spacecraft found traces of hydrogen and oxygen molecules - part of the recipe for water and thus the potential for life - embedded in the asteroid's rocky surface, said Dante Lauretta, the OSIRIS-REx mission's principal investigator, in 2018.
  • The trip back to Earth will take about two years. The spacecraft will then eject a capsule containing the asteroid samples, which NASA says will land in a remote area of Utah.

Babar Azam Becomes First Pakistan Captain to Win His Opening Four Tests

  • Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) congratulated the Pakistan men's cricket team on their sixth consecutive series win and Babar Azam, who has become the first Pakistan captain to win his opening four Tests.
  • Pakistan defeated South Africa in Tests and T20Is at home earlier this year and then won the T20I and ODI series in the return series before wrapping up the African safari with T20I and Test series wins against Zimbabwe in Harare.
  • This is the sixth time when Pakistan has won six or more series on the trot. Pakistan won 13 straight series in 2011-12, nine consecutive series in 2015-16, eight successive series in 2001-02 and six straight series in 1993-94 and 2017-18.

Arzan Nagwaswalla: 1st Parsi on Indian Cricket Team Since 1975

  • Arzan Nagwaswalla, a 23-year-old left-arm seamer from Gujarat, has been picked as a reserve player in the Indian Test squad named for the World Test Championship final against New Zealand in Southampton. Arzan Rohinton Nagwaswalla, hailing from a Parsi community in a village near the Maharashtra border, is the first Parsi cricketer to break into the national team since 1975 and the only active Parsi cricketer.
  • Farokh Engineer played his final Test for India in 1975, while Diana Edulji's last game in the women's team came in July 1993. The youngest member of a Parsi community from the village of Nargol, Nagwaswalla is the first Parsi cricketer to break into the Indian men's team since 1975.

Edappadi K. Palaniswami Elected as AIADMK Legislature Party Leader

  • A week after the results of the Tamil Nadu Assembly polls, the main opposition party AIADMK elected former Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami as its legislature party leader. The announcement came after two meetings over the last one week within the AIADMK, to decide between O. Pannerselvam and Palaniswami as the leader of the opposition.
  • The previous meeting of AIADMK party MLAs was inconclusive as there were arguments between the supporters of Palaniswami and Panneerselvam over who deserved to be the leader of the opposition.
  • It is pertinent to note that Panneerselvam was always the trusted lieutenant of late AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa, as he was chosen to be sit-in Chief Minister whenever Jayalalithaa had to step down owing to a crisis or incarceration. However, in the tussle that ensued after Jayalalithaa's demise in 2016, it was Palaniswami who gradually took over the reins of the party.

Suvendu Adhikari Elected Opposition Leader in West Bengal Assembly

  • BJP chose Suvendu Adhikari as Leader of Opposition in the new West Bengal Assembly.
  • Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad announced Adhikari's name as leader of the BJP legislature party in the assembly after a meeting of the legislators.
  • Adhikari had won election from Nandigram assembly seat, defeating his former mentor-turned-political adversary Mamata Banerjee by a narrow margin of over 1900 votes.
  • A former state minister Adhikari had joined the BJP before the state polls.

New Faces in Didi's Cabinet

  • At least 43 members of the third cabinet of the Mamata Banerjee government were sworn in as ministers during a low-key ceremony at the Raj Bhawan, amid the raging pandemic.
  • Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar administered the oath of office and secrecy to the ministers. Three TMC leaders Amit Mitra, Bratya Basu, and Rathin Ghosh were sworn in virtually. Mitra is unwell and both Basu and Ghosh are recuperating from Covid. Those who were sworn in include 24 Cabinet ministers and 10 ministers of state (independent charge). Eight women were sworn in, and with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the total number of women has increased to nine.
  • The portfolios were decided at the first Cabinet meeting of the government at the state secretariat. The Chief Minister retained the portfolios of Home and Hill Affairs, Personnel and Administration, Health and Family Welfare, Land and Land Reforms and Refugee and Rehabilitation, Information and Cultural Affairs, and North Bengal Development. Almost all senior ministers in the previous administration, including Amit Mitra, Subrata Mukherjee, Firhad Hakim and Partha Chatterjee, have been retained.

Ravinder Pal, 1980 Moscow Olympics Hockey Great, Passes Away

  • Former Indian hockey player and member of the 1980 Moscow Olympics winning side Ravinderpal Singh passed away at a Lucknow hospital. He was 61.
  • A two time Olympian – he was also part of the 1984 LA Olympics – the Sitapur-born Singh was only 20 when he became an Olympic gold medallist at Moscow, the last Olympic medal for Indian hockey.

  • Actor Anupam Kher won the Best Actor award at the New York City International Film Festival for the short film titled Happy Birthday. The film also bagged the Best Short Film award at the film festival.

  • Bollywood actress Kalki Koechlin is making her debut as an author, with her first book titled "Elephant In The Womb". The book, which is yet to be released, is an illustrated non-fiction book on motherhood. It is illustrated by Valeriya Polyanychko and published by Penguin Random House India (PRHI). The book narrates about pregnancy and parenting for mothers, expectant mothers, and "anyone even thinking about motherhood".
