World's Longest Pedestrian Suspension Bridge Open in Portugal

  • Nestling among the rocky mountains of Portugal's Arouca Geopark, a new bridge has become the world's longest pedestrian suspension bridge.
  • It's taken two years to build and cost 2.3 m euros ($2.8 million). It is due to open fully to visitors from 3 May, but some local residents have already had a chance to try it out.
  • The bridge hangs 175 meters above the fast-flowing River Paiva.

U.S. and European Countries Reject Syria Election Results in Advance

  • Western members of the UN Security Council, led by the United States, France and Britain, rejected the outcome of Syria's May 26 presidential election in advance, a position denounced by Russia as unacceptable.
  • The failure to enact a new constitution is proof positive that the so-called election on May 26 will be a sham," US ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said during a monthly session of the Security Council on Syria.
  • The regime of President Bashar al-Assad -- projected to win the vote under the current circumstances -- "must take steps to enable the participation of refugees, internally displaced persons, and the diaspora in any Syrian elections. Until then, we will not be fooled," she said.

Centre Seeks Expression of Interest for Draft Amendment to Indian Forest Act

  • The Union environment ministry has called for expression of interest from consulting agencies, firms, joint venture consortiums to prepare a new draft amendment to the Indian Forest Act, 1927. In an office memorandum on April 26, the ministry said it extended the date for submission of proposals after the deadline for it ended that day. The new deadline now is May 6.
  • The ministry published an amended draft of the Indian Forest Act in 2019, which included so-called "production" forests, mainly of timber, pulp, pulpwood and other non-forest produce, in its definition of forests. One of the principal concerns of tribal groups and activists was that the provisions of the zero draft amendment 2019 gave more powers to forest officers, including the use of firearms and greater immunity from prosecution. Following protests by tribals, the draft amendment was withdrawn.

B2B Startup Udaan Offers ESOP Liquidity

  • Udaan, India's largest business-to-business e-commerce platform, is offering ESOPs (employee stock ownership plans) liquidity plan worth about Rs. 175 crore among its employees, according to sources. The development comes at a time when the Bengaluru-based firm is witnessing a huge surge in business across its food, lifestyle and electronics business amid the pandemic which has accelerated the adoption of e-commerce.

Axis Bank Board Approves Re-appointment of Amitabh Chaudhry as MD & CEO

  • Private sector lender Axis Bank said that its board approved the re-appointment of Amitabh Chaudhry as its Managing Director and CEO for three years with effect from January 1, 2022.
  • The appointment will be subject to the approval of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and shareholders of the bank.
  • Chaudhry was appointed as Managing Director (MD) and CEO of Axis Bank for a period of three years, with effect from January 1, 2019 up to December 31, 2021.
  • Prior to joining Axis Bank, Chaudhry was MD and CEO of HDFC Standard Life Insurance Company.

Ujjivan may Move Resolution again to Appoint Samit Ghosh MD & CEO

  • Ujjivan Financial Services will reach out to the shareholders who voted against a special resolution to appoint Chairman Samit Ghosh as the managing director (MD) and chief executive (CEO) of the holding firm. Ujjivan Financial Services holds Ujjivan Small Finance Bank, which is run by Nitin Chugh after Ghosh left the position in November 2019.
  • Ghosh subsequently became the chairman of the holding company. As Ittira Davis, MD and CEO of the holding company, moved as a director of the bank, a special resolution was brought to the shareholders to make Ghosh the temporary MD and CEO.

NASA Astronaut Harvests Two Plants in Space

  • NASA's Expedition 64 crew member Michael Hopkins harvested two crops in space -- amara mustard, and a previously grown crop, extra dwarf pak choi.
  • They were grown for 64 days, the longest leafy greens have grown on station, the US space agency said. The pak choi grew for so long that it began to flower as part of its reproduction cycle. Hopkins' efforts in eclipsing the mark included using a small paintbrush to pollinate plant flowers. A VEG-05 experiment with dwarf tomatoes is planned for next year.

Karnataka Urban Local Body Polls Results 2021

  • The opposition Congress in Karnataka has trounced the ruling BJP by winning 120 out of the 263 wards in 10 local bodies across eight districts that went to the polls on April 27.
  • Surprisingly, even the Janata Dal (S) performed better than the BJP by winning 66 seats as against the saffron party`s 57 seats.

UP CM Yogi Adityanath Replaces his Team-11 with Team-9

  • Amid a surge in coronavirus cases, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath replaced his "Team-11", a group of officials tasked with managing the crises, with a new nine-member set of ministers and bureaucrats.
  • Opposition parties have been slamming Adityanath and Team-11 for their alleged failure to control the pandemic in the country's most populous state.
  • The CM was also accused of relying too much on bureaucrats, an allegation levelled also by an MLA from the ruling BJP itself.
  • Unlike Team-11, the new group called "Team- 9" also has two ministers. The nine members head their own committees or departments involved in fighting the pandemic.
  • "The CM has constituted a new Team-9 for effective management of COVID-19 and related work. This team will directly report to the CM and carry out important work in different fields.

NATO Military Exercises in Albania

  • North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has launched joint military exercises "DEFENDER-Europe 21" in Albania with thousands of military forces from the United States and other countries in the first such large-scale drills since World War II in the Western Balkans. Albania is playing a critical part in the DEFENDER-Europe 21 exercises with Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore operations taking place.
  • DEFENDER-Europe is an annual large-scale U.S. Army-led, multinational exercise, defensive in nature and focused on deterring aggression, which this year focuses on building operational readiness and interoperability with NATO and a greater number of allies and partners over a wider area of operations than ever before.
  • Around 28,000 U.S., allied and partner forces from 26 nations will conduct nearly simultaneous operations across more than 30 training areas in more than a dozen nations from the Baltics and Africa to the critical Black Sea and Balkan regions.

  • Sportswear brand ASICS announced that it has appointed Ravindra Jadeja, the all-rounder of the Indian cricket team as its brand ambassador.
  • The company, which focuses on sporting gear for the running category, said that its partnership with Jadeja would further strengthen the company's commitment, spread awareness about its diverse offerings, and magnify the reach of the brand during the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

  • Every year, May 1 is celebrated as International Worker's Day. Sheikh Zayed Book Award

  • Dr. Tahera Qutbuddin, a Mumbaikar by birth and a professor settled in US, became the first Indian to be chosen for the prestigious the Sheikh Zayed Book Award, touted as Arabic world's Nobel Prize for her book 'Arabic Oration: Art and Function'.
  • The Abu Dhabi Department of Cultural announces the award annually to people with exemplary work in the field of Arabic literature. It is aimed at showcasing the most powerful, stimulating and challenging works representing the Arab world.
  • A professor of Arabic Literature at the University of Chicago, Qutbuddin also serves on the editorial board of Abu Dhabi's Library of Arabic Literature. Her award-winning book was released by Brill Academic Publishers of Leiden in 2019.
  • Her research focuses on intersections of the literary, the religious and the political in classical Arabic poetry and prose.

Japanese Govt's MEXT Scholarships Application Process

  • Online applications have been invited by the Japanese Ministry of Education for scholarships for Indian students to pursue undergraduate, graduate courses and research at Japanese universities under the MEXT scholarship program 2022. Candidates can apply for the scholarship till May 28.
  • The MEXT scholarship will be offered to study a total of 20 subjects such as Mathematical Science, Physics, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Geology and Geo-informatics among others.

Pregnant Egyptian Mummy Revealed by Scientists

  • A team of Polish scientists have discovered the only known example of an embalmed pregnant Egyptian mummy.
  • The discovery was made by researchers at the Warsaw Mummy Project and revealed in the Journal of Archaeological Science on Thursday.
  • The project, started in 2015, uses technology to examine artefacts housed at the National Museum in Warsaw.
  • The mummy was previously thought to be a male priest but scans reveal it was a woman in the later stages of pregnancy.
  • Experts from the project believe the remains are most likely of a high-status woman, aged between 20 and 30, who died during the 1st Century BC.
  • "Presented here is the only known example of a mummified pregnant woman and the first radiological images of such a foetus," they said announcing the find.
  • Using the foetus head circumference, they estimate it was between 26 and 30 weeks when the mother died for unknown reasons.
