Maldives Considers Scrapping Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with China

  • Maldives, which has been steadily restricting its ties with China, may scrap its Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Beijing to safeguard trade relations with other countries including India.
  • The FTA established between Maldives and China during the regime of former President Abdulla Yameen will hinder trade relations with other countries, stated Maldives' economic minister Fayyaz Ismail.
  • The contentious agreement was signed between the then Maldives president and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping during the former's first state visit to Beijing in 2017. 

Turkey To Conduct Seismic Survey In Eastern Mediterranean

  • Turkey's navy has issued an advisory that the Turkish ship Oruc Reis will carry out a seismic survey in the eastern Mediterranean over the next ten days, a step likely to revive tensions with NATO ally Greece.
  • Two other vessels, the Ataman and Cengiz Han along with Oruc Reis exploration ship will continue works in an area including the south of Greek island of Kastellorizo till month end.
  • The two countries are at odds over overlapping claims for hydrocarbon resources in the region. The Foreign Ministers of Turkey and Greece met last week and agreed to hold bilateral talks on the disputes.
  • Last month, Ankara withdrew Oruc Reis from contested waters to "allow for diplomacy" ahead of a European Union summit.

Iran-backed Militias Offer Truce for US Troop Withdrawal

  • Iraqi militias backed by Iran have agreed to temporarily halt attacks targeting the American presence in Iraq on the condition that US-led coalition troops withdraw from the country in line with a parliamentary resolution.
  • The militia officials spoke to The Associated Press just hours after a roadside bomb targeted a convoy transporting equipment for the US-led coalition on a highway south of Baghdad, damaging one vehicle.
  • The militia factions offered a truce and will refrain from targeting the US in Iraq, including the US Embassy, on the condition that American forces withdraw within an "acceptable time frame", said Mohammed Mohie, a spokesman for the powerful Iran-backed Kataib Hezbollah.
  • If it does not withdraw, the resistance factions will resume their military activities with all the capabilities available to them.

Eight Indian Beaches Get 'Blue Flag' Certification

  • India received the prestigious 'Blue Flag' certification for all its eight beaches that it recommended.
  • As per Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar, the certification is a global recognition of India's conservation and sustainable development efforts.
  • The Blue Flag certification is a globally recognised eco-label accorded by "Foundation for Environment Education, Denmark" based on 33 stringent criteria under four major heads -- environmental education and information, bathing water quality, environment management and conservation, and safety and services at the beaches.
  • Blue Flag certification was awarded to eight beaches spread across five states and two union territories by an international jury comprising of eminent members of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), Denmark-based NGO Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
  • The beaches which have been awarded the certification are Shivrajpur in Gujarat, Ghoghla in Diu, Kasarkod and Padubidri in Karnataka, Kappad in Kerala, Rushikonda in Andhra Pradesh, Golden in Odisha and Radhanagar in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Cello Group Re-enters Stationery Business

  • After selling its stationery business to France's BIC five years ago, the Cello Group is re-entering the category and plans to launch products in the domestic market.
  • In December 2015, stationery major BIC Group acquired Cello Pens, the largest Indian manufacturer of writing instruments, for Rs. 540 crore.
  • Gaurav P. Rathod, Managing Director, Cello Group said that we have just started stationery business with a different brand name (Unomax).
  • The company has different strategy for its new stationery business to differentiate it from Cello Pens.

RBI to Move to Next Generation Treasury Application

  • In a bid to improve its functioning, the Reserve Bank has decided to move to the Next Generation Treasury Application (NGTA) for managing the country's foreign exchange and gold reserves.
  • According to the RBI, the NGTA will be a web-based application providing scalability, manoeuvrability and flexibility to introduce new products and securities, besides supporting multi-currency transactions and settlements.
  • The NGTA, for which the RBI has invited bids from eligible vendors, will be supporting various transactions in asset classes like Fixed Income (FI), Forex (FX), Money Market (MM) and Gold.
  • As per RBI, the objectives of the proposed system included, dealing in various asset classes (like Fixed Income Securities, Forex, Money Market, Gold); portfolio management; work flow management; reserve management; integration with various third party and in-house systems; and dashboards, reports, widgets.

Nadal Wins French Open 2020

  • Rafael Nadal won the French Open, 2020 beating Novak Djokovic. This is Nadal's 20th Grand Slam and 13th French Open title.
  • He is a Spanish Tennis player. He is ranked number 2 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). He has won two Olympic medals, 21 ATP Tour 500 titles, 35 ATP Tour Masters 1000 titles. Also, he has won 13 French Open, one Australian open, two Wimbledon, four US open.
  • He has a stand alone record of the player with most clay court titles. Due to this, he is called "The King of Clay" in the sport of Tennis.
  • Under female category of French Open, 2020, Iga Swiatek won the title. She was the first player from Poland to win a Grand Slam.
  • She is ranked at 48 by the Women Tennis Association. She is the third highest ranked teenager.

Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies Retain French Open Men's Doubles Title

  • German duo Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies retained their French Open doubles crown as they beat Croatian Mate Pavic and Brazilian Bruno Soares 6-3, 7-5. 
  • A year after becoming the first all-German team to capture a Grand Slam men`s doubles trophy in the professional era, they again shone on the Parisian clay, winning in 89 minutes.
  • The eighth seeds were clinical against the U.S. Open champions, breaking once in each set for victory and became only the fourth team to win back-to-back French Open titles.

Surjewala Chief of Congress Key Committee

  • Congress general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala was named chairperson of the party's election management and coordination committee for the Bihar elections.
  • Surjewala will chair the 14-member panel, which has among members former Speaker Meira Kumar, former minister Subodh Kant Sahay and star campaigners for the state Shatrughan Sinha and Kirti Azad. The panel convener is former general secretary of the Congress Mohan Prakash.
  • The panel also features CWC member Tariq Anwar, former AICC general secretary Shakeel Ahmed and former Haryana minister Ajay Yadav.
  • Sonia Gandhi also approved the setting up of the publicity committee, media coordination committee, public meeting and logistics committee, legal committee and office management committee for the elections.

Khushbu Sundar Resigns from Congress, to Join BJP

  • Popular actor-turned politician Khushbu Sundar resigned from the Congress party. In her resignation letter to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi she wrote, "few elements seated at higher level within the party, people who've no connectivity with ground reality or public recognition are dictating terms".
  • The party, meanwhile, announced in Delhi that Sundar was removed from her post of All India Congress Committee spokesperson with immediate effect.
  • As per reports, she is likely to join BJP. This could be a significant move ahead of assembly elections in her home state Tamil Nadu next year.
  • Sundar was with the DMK before joining the Congress party in 2014.

Navy to Hold Passage Exercise with U.S. Carrier

  • Continuing the series of its maritime engagements, the Navy held another Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier group. 
  • Navy ships held a PASSEX with USS Ronald Reagan on October 12 as it transits through the Indian Ocean.
  • The PASSEX is likely to be held in the waters off Kochi. On September 25, for the first time a U.S. Navy P-8A long range maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) landed at Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, for refuelling under the bilateral logistics support agreement.

South African Human Rights Lawyer Priscilla Jana Passes Away

  • Renowned Indian-origin South African human rights lawyer Priscilla Jana who represented many anti-apartheid political leaders, including Nelson Mandela, passed away at the age of 76.
  • Jana was the Deputy Chairperson of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).
  • As a black female lawyer she overcame pernicious limitations imposed by the apartheid system that marginalised her on the basis of race, sex and gender and fought for the liberation of the then oppressed majority of South Africans.
  • In early 60's, Jana was granted a Government of India scholarship to study medicine in India where she completed studies in Inter-Science.

China Commemorates Birth Anniversary of Dr. Dwarkanath Kotnis

  • China commemorated the 110th birth anniversary of Indian doctor Dwarkanath Kotnis who served in the country during the Chinese revolution headed by Mao Zedong and the World War II.
  • Dr. Kotnis, who hailed from Sholapur in Maharashtra, came to China in 1938 as part of a five-member team of doctors sent by the Indian National Congress to help the Chinese during the World War II. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1942 and died the same year at the age of 32.
  • The Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), an official body of the Chinese government, held an online commemorative event along with the Director of the Centre for South Asian Studies of the Peking University.

PM Modi to Release Commemorative Coin in Honour of Vijaya Raje Scindia

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a commemorative coin of 100 rupees in honour of Vijaya Raje Scindia through a virtual ceremony.
  • One of the founder members of BJP, Vijaya Raje Scindia is popularly known as the Rajmata of Gwalior. The coin was released in celebration of birth centenary of Vijaya Raje Scindia.
  • The special commemorative coin was minted by the Finance Ministry as a part of these celebrations. 
  • Vijaya Raje Scindia was elected to Lok Sabha 7 times and twice to the Rajya Sabha. 

Kerala Girl Cooks Her Way into Record Books

  • A 10-year-old girl dished out 30 plus scrumptious food items, including corn fritters, 'uttapam,' fried rice and chicken roast, in less than one hour, earning her a place in record books.
  • The amazing feat by Saanvi M. Prajit, daughter of Wing Commander of Indian Air Force Prajit Babu and Manjma hailing from Ernakulam, was recognised by the Asia Book of Records and the India Book of Records.
  • Her records have been established for the maximum number of dishes prepared by a child.
  • The Asia Book of Records authorities watched online the cookery event organised at her Visakhapatnam residence.
  • Besides, two gazetted officers were witness to the cooking of 33 items in an hour by Saanvi.

Tree Transplant Policy of Delhi Government

  • The Cabinet under Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal approved "Tree Transplantation Policy". The policy makes it mandatory to transplant 80 percentage of the trees that are being felled for a development project. Also, an additional 10 saplings should be planted as compensatory plantation.
  • The policy is first of its kind in the country. The policy does not apply if 10 or less trees are felled for the development project. Under the policy, the invasive species are excluded from the list of species that will be transplanted. In order to address the challenge of survival rate of transplanted tree national level agencies are to be appointed as a part of an expert panel.
  • The State Government of Delhi is to set up a tree transplantation cell. A panel has been formed from the identified agencies.

Government to Introduce Energy Conservation Policy

  • According to a release by State Energy Conservation Mission CEO A. Chandra Sekhar Reddy, in an attempt to achieve energy security, cost-effective power and strengthen the power sector, Andhra Pradesh government is contemplating to introduce a new policy for promotion of the use of the latest and efficient technologies for energy conservation in various sectors.
  • He stated that the Energy Department was eliciting the views of experts and the Central agencies such as Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) and institutes such as The Energy Resources Institute (TERI), Central Board of Irrigation and Power and Alliance for Energy Efficient Economy for formulating the policy.
  • The policy is aimed at conserving energy being used in industries, buildings, civic bodies , agriculture, transport, power utilities, commercial and residential sectors.

Artist Portrays Life of Bhagat Puran Singh

  • Renowned artist Sukhpreet Singh, who portrayed life of Bhagat Puran Singh in his painting, presented the painting to Dr. Inderjit Kaur, patron-president of the Pingalwara Charitable Society. It is first such painting in which an artist has covered all the events and achievements of the esteemed personality.
  • Sukhpreet stated that he has tried to cover struggles and services of Bhagat on this three ft canvas with acrylic colours. "Several pictures were available to narrate his life. I took the real life expressions. The Banyan tree is in main focus, where Bhagat would sit inside the Pingalwara. His affection with Payra Singh, who found him abandoned before partition of Punjab."
  • Inderjit Kaur appreciated the art work and shared many stories of Bhagat Puran Singh. 
  • The art work will be displayed at an appropriate place in the Pingalwara's museum.

Book 'The Khalistan Conspiracy' by GBS Sidhu

  •  A former intelligence officer with the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), GBS Sidhu has written how pro-Khalistan sentiments and Sikh extremism "were deliberately encouraged and then crushed with a heavy hand to draw political mileage".
  • The book `The Khalistan Conspiracy', is a first-person account that brings out little-known facts about the Khalistan movement and the role of senior politicians of the time "in creating and sustaining it".
  • The book published by Harper Collins was released in October 2020.
