Sri Lanka Stages 'Mock Election'

  • Sri Lanka staged a mock election to test measures aimed at preventing the spread of the coronavirus during a parliamentary vote in August.
  • The poll was due to be held on April 25 but was put off and then postponed indefinitely due to the epidemic.
  • The election commission said that the vote would be held on August 5. The island nation of 21 million people has steadily lifted its lockdown restrictions, although a night curfew remains.
  • The new health measures-- to be implemented at polling booths and counting centres - were trialled in four of the 22 electoral districts.
  • Officials and polling agents will be behind clear plastic screens or wear face shields. We have also ensured that voters will stand a metre apart when they queue up." Voters will also be required to bring their own pen or pencil to mark ballot papers.

Somalia v Somaliland: Leaders Meet over Long Feud

  • The leaders of Somalia and the self-declared republic of Somaliland are holding rare talks in an effort to end a long-standing feud.
  • President Mohamed Abdullahi "Farmajo" Mohamed of Somalia and Somaliland's leader Muse Bihi Abdi are meeting in neighbouring Djibouti.
  • The main point of contention is Somaliland's political status following its decision to declare independence in 1991.
  • This was rejected by the government in Mogadishu and Somaliland has not been internationally recognised.
  • Djibouti's President Ismail Omar Guelleh and the Ethiopian Prime Minister and Nobel Peace Prize winner Abiy Ahmed are playing a mediation role at the meeting.

TPG, L Catterton to Buy stake in Jio Platforms

  • Reliance Industries has raised Rs. 64.4 billion ($847 million) from the sale of two stakes in its digital unit Jio Platforms, making them the tenth deals in less than two months.
  • The oil-to-telecoms conglomerate said on Saturday global investment firm TPG will buy a 0.93% stake for Rs. 4,546.80 crore ($598 million), while private equity firm L Catterton will pick up a 0.39% stake for Rs. 1894.50 crore ($249 million).
  • Reliance, which is controlled by India's richest man Mukesh Ambani, has now sold just over 22% of Jio Platforms to investors including Facebook Inc, securing $13.72 billion in eight weeks.
  • L Catterton, one of the world's largest consumer focused private equity firm.

Exim Bank Sanctions $215.68 mn LoC to Malawi Govt.

  • Export-Import Bank of India (EXIM Bank) , a specialised financial institution wholly owned by Government of India (GoI),has provided a line of credit (LOC) of $215.68 million to the Malawi government.
  • This assistance will be used on drinking water supply schemes and other development projects includes supply of irrigation network, tobacco threshing plant, cotton processing facilities, green belt initiative, sugar processing equipment, fuel storage facility and construction of a new water supply system from Likhubula river in Mulanje to Blantyre.
  • The LOC Agreement was signed between Mr. Sudatta Mandal, Chief General Manager, Exim Bank, and H.E Mr. George Mkondiwa, High Commissioner, Malawi High Commission in India in New Delhi.

Adani and Tata Vie for Odisha Discoms

  • The Adani Group, R. P.Sanjiv Goenka group's CESC Ltd and Tata Power Co. Ltd have evinced interest in the three electricity distribution companies (discoms) being privatised by the Odisha government.
  • The discoms are the Western Electricity Supply Utility of Odisha Ltd (Wesco), North Eastern Electricity Supply Co. of Odisha Ltd (Nesco) and the Southern Electricity Supply Co. of Orissa Ltd (Southco).
  • "Among those who have evinced interest in placing bids for these discoms are CESC, Tata Power and Adani. All of them have experience in running discom businesses. The privatisation drive of the three discoms is spearheaded by the Odisha Electricity Regulatory Commission (OERC).

Europe's Sun Mission Makes First Close Pass

  • Europe's Solar Orbiter (SolO) probe made its first close pass of the Sun, tracking by at a distance of just over 77 million km.
  • SolO was launched in February and is on a mission to understand what drives our star's dynamic behaviour.
  • The close pass, known as a perihelion, puts the probe between the orbits of Venus and Mercury.
  • In the coming years, SolO will go nearer still, closing to within 43 million km of the Sun on occasions.
  • As it stands today, only five other missions have dived deeper into the inner Solar System: Mariner 10, Helios 1 & 2, Messenger, and Parker Solar Probe.

Kathy Sullivan Becomes 1st Woman to Reach Deepest Point of Ocean

  • Sixty-eight-year-old Kathy Sullivan, Former NASA astronaut and Geologist became the first woman to reach the Challenger Deep, the deepest point in the ocean.
  • Challenger Deep is located in the Mariana Trench, 7 miles below the surface of the Pacific Ocean which is 200 miles southwest of Guam.
  • This is the deepest point known in the Ocean.
  • Kathy Sullivan joined NASA in 1978 and flew three shuttle missions and in 1993 she left NASA and started exploring oceanography.
  • She became the under-secretary of Commerce for oceans and atmosphere in the United States.
  • She was the first American Woman to walk in space in 1984.
  • In 2004 she was inducted into the Astronauts Hall of Fame.
  • She was the 8th human to take the dive to Challenger Deep.
  • She became the first human to visit both the space and the deepest known point in the Ocean.

BJP Takes Digital Route to Connect with Voters

  • With key states headed for the polls later this year and next year, and with the coronavirus disease showing no sign of abating, the poll campaign of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will be built around digital rallies that highlight the achievements of the first year of its second stint in power, according to leaders familiar with the details.
  • Addressing a virtual rally for Jammu and Kashmir, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that the mode of outreach was "samvaad ka ek rasta (a way to communicate)", and added that a new world where physical distancing is the keyword has nudged politics towards the path of "digital India".
  • Singh's address was among the 75 such rallies planned by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government, but party leaders said these virtual events were likely to continue as part of poll campaigning. While Bihar will go to polls later this year, West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will vote in 2021 to elect a new government.

Bollywood Actor Sushant Singh Rajput Dies

  • Actor Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his residence in Mumbai's Bandra. The actor was found dead at his sixth floor apartment in Bandra (West). While the police have confirmed that he has died by suicide, no 'note' was found from his residence. "Sushant Singh Rajput has committed suicide, Mumbai Police is investigating," DCP Pranay Ashok, spokesperson Mumbai Police said.
  • The actor was known for his performances in films such as Chhichhore, MS Dhoni: The Untold Story and Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!. He started his career on television and is still remembered for his performance in Pavitra Rishta.

UTI Mutual Funds Appoint Imtaiyazur Rahman as CEO

  • UTI Asset Management Board appointed Imtaiyazur Rahman as Chief Executive Officer (CEO ) of the UTI Asset Management Committee (AMC) after two years as the interim CEO. He succeeded Leo Puri whose 5-year tenure was over in August 2018.
  • He joined the UTI group in 1998 and it with the UTI AMC since 2003.
  • Rahaman was also involved in the transformation of the company formerly known as Unit Trust of India with then chairmen M Damodaran and SK Sinha and succeeded UK Sinha as Interim CEO from 2012-13
  • He was the CFO(Cheif Financial officer) and headed many different functions in the company including international business.
  • He was appointed as the interim CEO since 2018 after the retirement of Leo Puri.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

  • World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is observed every year on 15th June to raise voice for the elders who are abused and suffered.
  • This day was officially recognised by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2011 following a request by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) by passing UN resolution 66/127. According to the UN, around 1in 6 older people experience some form of abuse. It is predicted to rise as populations age worldwide. No doubt elder abuse may lead to serious physical injuries and long-term psychological consequences. It is a global social issue which affects the health and human rights of millions of older persons around the world.
  • The main objective of this day is to provide an opportunity for communities around the globe to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by creating awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect.
  • The theme for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) 2020 is "Building Strong Supports for Elders".

'Sahakar Mitra' Scheme to Provide Paid Internship to the Youth

  • Narendra Singh Tomar, Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister launchedd a Sahakar Mitra: Scheme on Internship Program (SIP) an initiative of the NCDC (National Cooperative Development Corporation). The program will provide practical experience of the cooperative sector and assured project loans on liberalized terms to young professionals in the start-up industry. The portal for online application is available on the NCDC website.
  • The young professionals from academic institutions will be working with the NCDC under the scheme to develop leadership and entrepreneurial skills through the cooperative sector by playing the role of FPO (Farmer Producer Organisation).
  • The cooperatives provide paid internships where the professionals can practically learn while working and become self-reliant, emphasizing on the 'Atma Nirbhar Bharat' initiated by the Prime Minister of our country.
  • The NCDC has created funds for the Sahakar Mitra Paid Internship Program, under which each intern will receive financial support for a period of 4 months.
