Donald Trump Targets ICC

  • U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order authorising sanctions against individuals involved in an International Criminal Court (ICC) investigation into whether U.S. forces committed war crimes in Afghanistan.
  • As per reports, the ICC probe is "being pushed forward by an organisation of dubious integrity" and accused Russia of having a role.
  • The order authorises Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in consultation with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, to block assets in the U.S. of ICC employees involved in the probe.
  • It also authorises Mr. Pompeo to block entry into the U.S. of these individuals.

Mahindra Seeks to Give Up Control of SsangYong

  • After incurring a substantial loss in the March quarter due to losses at foreign subsidiaries, Mahindra and Mahindra said that it will exit several money-losing businesses, starting with US-based electric bike company GenZe.
  • The company will also stop further investments in its Korean subsidiary SsangYong and is willing to give up control in the loss-making venture.
  • The farm equipment and SUV maker reported a loss of Rs. 2,510 crore for the March quarter due to one-time provision of Rs. 2,781 crore made due to impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and write-off on several investments. About 80% of the write-off was on account of SsangYong and GenZe.
  • Mahindra has been looking for investors in SsanYong after it failed to turn the company profitable.
  • Not just SsangYong and GenZe, the company has promised to relook all its money-losing ventures and may exit several to reduce expenses.

RBI Sets Up Panel to Review Ownership of Private Lenders

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) constituted an internal working group to review the existing guidelines on ownership and corporate structure of private sector banks. The group will be headed by RBI executive director P. K. Mohanty.
  • The group will examine the existing licensing guidelines and regulations on ownership and control of private sector banks. It will also suggest appropriate norms, keeping in mind the issue of excessive concentration of ownership and control. Besides, it will examine and review the eligibility criteria for individuals or entities to apply for a banking license, and review the promoter shareholding norms at the initial licensing stage.
  • It will also study the current regulations on holding of financial subsidiaries through a non-operative financial holding company (NOFHC) and suggest steps to migrate all banks to a uniform regulation.
  • The need to examine the current guidelines on ownership comes after large shareholders of private sector banks sought RBI's permission to raise their stakes beyond the permitted 15%.

NHAI Becomes First Construction Sector Organisation to Go 'Fully Digital'

  • The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said that it has gone fully digital with cloud-based 'Data Lake Software', becoming the first such construction sector organisation. With advance analytics, the 'Data Lake' software will forecast the delays, likely disputes and give advance alerts.
  • At the same time, the software will facilitate in taking correct and timely decisions as the system is likely to predict financial impacts of different alternatives based on the historical data.
  • The entire project management workflow of NHAI is transformed from manual to online portal based, wherein the complete project execution operations including 'workflow with time lines' and 'alert mechanism' have been configured, the authority said adding, all project documentation, contractual decisions and approvals are now being done through portal only.
  • Under the software, the complete project documents and correspondences will be stored in Digital format in the cloud-based 'Data Lake' linked with GIS tagging and Unique Project ID, so that the project data can be easily retrieved as and when required from any location.

iFLOWS-Mumbai, An Integrated Flood Warning System for Mumbai

  • Maharashtra's Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Science and Technology, Dr. Harsh Vardhan launched an Integrated Flood Warning System called 'IFLOWS-Mumbai.
  • A joint initiative between the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the warning system will be able to relay alerts of possible flood-prone areas anywhere between 6 to 72 hours in advance. Mumbai is only the second city in the country after Chennai to get this system. Similar systems are being developed for Bengaluru and Kolkata.

First in the World: Indian Railways Runs Double-Stack Container Train

  • Accordeing to Piyush Goyal, the Indian Railways created a new world benchmark by successfully running first Double Stack Container Train in high rise Over Head Equipment (OHE) electrified sections.
  • This achievement is a first of its kind in the entire world and will also boost the ambitious mission of Green India as a latest green initiative over Indian Railways.
  • With this development, Indian Railways has proudly become the first Railway to run Double Stack Container train with high reach pantograph in high rise OHE territory, the Operations of which successfully commenced on 10th June, 2020 from Palanpur and Botad stations in Gujarat.

Odisha 1st State in India to Receive ISO Certification for Tribal Hostels

  • Odisha became the first State in India to receive prestigious ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 9001:2015 certification for its 44 tribal hostels of Keonjhar (32 hostels) and Sambalpur (12 hostels) districts improving their overall infrastructure and standards under Mission Suvidya.
  • The Odisha state's department of ST & SC Development in association with Quality Control of India (QCI) has conducted a comprehensive assessment & evaluation of all hostels with the aim to improve the standard and quality of the hostels.

Indian Military Tests Eye-tracking Tech to Help Pilots Control Planes

  • Pilots in India are testing aircraft display systems that work by tracking and responding to eye movements and could let military pilots keep their hands on the plane's controls more often while flying.
  • Modern aircraft have electronic display systems that show information such as the plane's fuel level, imaging system or geographical position. Pilots can click the screen to the relevant page of information as needed, but this requires taking one hand either off the plane's throttle or control stick.
  • Through unique eye- and face-tracking sensor technologies, with a key focus on alertness and attention, Seeing Machines technology enables key data and metrics to understand and improve human performance. This technology is unique. It is a non-wearable, unobtrusive system that can be adapted and integrated into various real-world environments to provide new data to optimise training and operational monitoring.
  • This technology will challenge the 'current way' and provide a new perspective, with data that focuses on the human element, their alertness and performance.

India's Oldest First-class Cricketer Vasant Raiji Passes Away

  • India's oldest first-class cricketer Vasant Raiji, a right-handed batsman passed away at 100 due to old-age at his residence in Walkeshwar in South Mumbai. He was born on January 26, 1920 in Vadodara(Baroda), Gujarat.
  • Vasant Raiji is a former opening batsman who represented Bombay, Baroda, and Cricket Club of India (CCI) in first-class cricket between 1941 and 1950.
  • Vasant Raiji made his first-class debut in 1939 for the CCI team that played against the Central Provinces and Berar in Nagpur.
  • He played 9 first-class matches in the 1940s, scoring 277 runs, where 68 is his highest score(in Baroda's victory over Maharashtra in 1944-45) which includes his opening batting for Bombay and Baroda in the Ranji Trophy.
  • By profession he is a chartered accountant
  • After his cricket career he became an author who wrote books about former Indian cricketers like Victor Trumper, CK Nayudu, LP Jai. His book gives a rare literature of cricketing history.
  • He is a one of the founding members of the Jolly Cricket Club.

World Blood Donor Day

  • Every year on 14th June, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day (WBDD). The event was organised for the first time in 2005, by a joint initiative of World Health Organisation, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products, and to thank blood donors for their voluntary, life-saving gifts of blood.
