U.S. Joins G7 Artificial Intelligence Group to Counter China

  • The US has joined an international panel for setting ethical guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence.
  • The Trump administration had earlier dismissed the idea.
  • The Trump administration had been the lone holdout among leaders of the Group of Seven — the world's wealthiest democracies — in setting up the Global Partnership on AI.
  • White House's chief technology officer, Michael Kratsios, told it is important to establish shared democratic principles as a counter to China's record of "twisting technology" in ways that threaten civil liberties.

Australian Court Grants Access to Queen's Letters

  •  Letters written by the Queen before the 1975 dismissal of then Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam can be made public, an Australian court has ruled.
  • Mr Whitlam's government was removed by her representative at the time, Governor-General Sir John Kerr, and replaced with an opposition party.
  • The dismissal is often described as the most controversial episode in Australian political history.
  • It is not known what the letters between the Queen and Sir John contain.
  • Historians have long questioned what Buckingham Palace knew about the removal of Mr Whitlam, a progressive whose reforms divided Australia after two decades of conservative rule.
  • More than 200 letters have been kept sealed in the National Archives since 1978, but  in 2020 the High Court of Australia ruled they could be accessed in the national interest.

Trump Terminates US Relationship with WHO

  • US President Donald Trump has announced that he is terminating the country's relationship with the World Health Organization (WHO).
  • The president has accused the WHO of failing to hold Beijing to account over the coronavirus pandemic.
  • "China has total control over the World Health Organization," the president said while announcing measures aimed at punishing Beijing.
  • Washington will redirect funds to other bodies.
  • The US is the global health agency's largest single contributor, providing more than $400m (£324m; €360m) in 2019.

Missile park "Agneeprastha" to be set up at INS Kalinga

  • The foundation stone for a missile park "Agneeprastha" was laid at INS Kalinga, Naval base in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
  • The park "Agneeprastha"once completed will be dedicated to all the officers, sailors and support staff of INS Kalinga, who has served in this premier op-support Base of the ENC since its establishment in 1981.
  • The park also commemorates the award of the prestigious Unit Citation to INS Kalinga for 2018-19 and aims to capture glimpses of missile history of Kalinga since 1981 till date.
  • The park has been set up with a replica of missiles and ground support equipment (GSE) that showcase the evolution of missiles handled by the unit.
  • The exhibits have been created from scrap/obsolete inventory which have been reconditioned in-house.

Capgemini COO Thierry Delaporte Becomes New Wipro CEO and MD

  • IT services major Wipro has appointed Capgemini Group veteran Thierry Delaporte as its Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, effective July 6, 2020.
  • In January 2020, the company had said its CEO and Managing Director Abidali Z Neemuchwala had decided to step down from the company.
  • Abidali Neemuchwala will relinquish his position as CEO and MD on June 1, 2020.
  • Rishad Premji will oversee the day-to-day operations of the company until July 5, 2020.

Ajit Jogi, First Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Dies at 74

  • Ajit Jogi, who served as the first chief minister of Chhattisgarh after the formation of the state, died at 74.
  • Ajit Pramod Kumar Jogi was an Indian politician, who served as the first chief minister of the state of Chhattisgarh, India.
  • He was a member of the Janta Congress Chhattisgarh (INC) political party.
  • The Janta Congress Chhattisgarh political party was founded by Jogi, after he and his son Amit were expelled from the Indian National Congress due to anti-party activities as well as sabotaging an Antagarh by polls elections. Amit was expelled for six years.

UK PM Appoints Indian-origin Academic as Natural History Museum Trustee

  • British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has appointed Indian-origin academic Yadvinder Malhi as a new Trustee of the Natural History Museum in London.
  • The 52-year-old expert will take on the unpaid advisory role for a period of four years until May 2024.
  • Malhi is a professor of Ecosystem Science at the University of Oxford, Jackson Senior Research Fellow in Biodiversity and Conservation at Oriel College, Oxford, and the director of the Oxford Centre for Tropical Forests and the Oxford University Biodiversity Network.

Madhya Pradesh Launches 'Rozgar Setu' Scheme for Skilled Workers

  •  Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced the launch of the 'Rozgar Setu' scheme, that would help secure employment for skilled workers who have returned.
  • The State is the first to devise such a work plan. They are surveying skilled workers who were employed at industries elsewhere, but have now returned.
  • After such workers requiring employment are identified, the government will contact factory and workshop owners and contractors overseeing infrastructure projects such as road and bridge construction.
