Israeli Prime Minister Faces Jerusalem Court

  • Mr Netanyahu, 70, is the first standing leader to face trial in the country's history. He denies accusations of bribery, fraud and breach of trust.
  • The trial of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on corruption charges has opened in Jerusalem, days after he began a new term in office.
  • Arrived at the courthouse for a brief hearing, he said the cases were aimed at "toppling him in any way possible".
  • He was sworn back into office as head of a rare unity government a week ago.
  • His political rival, Benny Gantz, agreed to share power following three inconclusive elections in under a year.

ANTIA Finds High Energy Particles From Ice

  • The NASA researchers have found high energy particles erupting from ice in the Antarctic region. The researchers believe that these particles are proof to parallel universe.
  • The ANTIA is high-energy cosmic neutrino that detect radio pulses that are being emitted by Antarctic ice sheet.
  • The ANTIA instrument detect cosmic-ray neutrinos through a scientific ballon that is flying in the region of Antarctica. It is the first NASA observatory of neutrinos.

Millions of Periodical Cicadas to Emerge in Parts of US

  • After spending 17 years underground, millions of cicadas will be emerging in parts of the United States.
  • Periodical cicadas are expected to come out in early summer across southwest Virginia, parts of North Carolina, and in West Virginia.
  • The last time the cicadas emerged in many of those regions was in 2003 and 2004, though some areas saw an emergence in 2013.
  • As many as 1.5 million of the insects can emerge per acre of land.
  • While they are some of the longest-lived insects in the world, periodical cicadas spend almost their entire lives underground as what entomologists call "nymphs".

ICICI Introduced 'ICICI Bank Golden Years FD' for Senior Citizens

  • The Private sector  ICICI bank as introduced  a special fixed deposit (FD) scheme for senior citizens called 'ICICI Bank Golden Years FD' which offers an  interest rate of 6.55% per annum (p.a) for deposits up to Rs 2 crores with a tenure of more than 5 years to 10 years.
  • It is applicable for resident Indians & is available from May 20 to September 30, 2020.
  • The scheme offers 80 basis points (bps) more than what is applicable to the general public (non-senior citizens) for the same deposit amount and tenor.

Edelweiss General Insurance Launches App Based Pay-As-You-Use Motor Insurance

  • Edelweiss General Insurance (EGI), announced the launch of an innovative, app-based Motor OD floater policy – Edelweiss SWITCH.
  • This driver-based motor insurance policy, launched under IRDAI's Regulatory Sandbox, allows vehicle owners to SWITCH their motor insurance ON and OFF, based on usage and covers multiple vehicles under a single policy.
  • Edelweiss SWITCH uses a pay-as-you-use model that allows the customer to pay the premium only on the days they use the vehicle, offering significant cost savings and convenience. 

Maruti Suzuki Ties up With Cholamandalam Investment & Finance

  • The country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India announced partnership with Cholamandalam Investment & Finance Company Ltd to provide customised auto retail financing solutions to retail buyers.
  • The new solution 'Buy-Now-Pay-Later Offer' is aimed to provide customers with easy financing options.
  • The new solution will allow customers to start paying the EMIs after 60 days of loan disbursement. The offer is available on select Maruti Suzuki models and will be applicable on loan disbursement till June 30, 2020.

TCLL and Sports Authority Gujarat in Pact to Train 2000 Athletes

  • Times Centre for Learning Limited (TCLL) recently signed an MOU with the Sports Authority Gujarat to impart training for personality and skill development for aspiring athletes across Gujarat.
  • Sports Authority Gujarat has partnered with TCLL and they will be beginning by training over 2000 young and aspiring athletes across Gujarat in areas such as Nadiad, Anand, Tapi, Porbandar, Surat and Himmat Nagar. 

Aritz Aduriz, Spanish Footballer Announces Retirement

  • Spanish footballer, Athletic Bilbao striker Artiz Aduriz announced his retirement at the age of 39 after finding out that he requires prosthetic hip replacement surgery.
  • Aritz Aduriz started with Athletic and also played for the Spanish clubs Valladolid, Mallorca and Valencia.
  • In 2010 he won his first Spain cap.
  • In the Spanish Super Cup 2015 final he scored four goals over the two legs and defeated FC Barcelona (5-1) on aggregate to win the title.
  • He won 13 caps for Spain becoming the oldest player to score for Spain in 2016, he scored 141 goals in 296 appearances for Bilbao.
  • He became a member of Spain's Vicente del Bosque's squad in the European Championship 2016, France.

  • Seven services hosted on website of Indian Metrological Department, IMD have been onboarded to UMANG application.
  • These services are Current Weather, Nowcast, City Forecast, Rainfall Information, Tourism Forecast, Warnings, Cyclone.
  • The Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance, UMANG, is a unified, multi-channel, multi-platform, multi-lingual, multi-service mobile app.

RITES Signs Pact to Acquire 24% Stake in Indian Railway Station Development

  • State-owned RITES Ltd has signed an agreement to buy 24% stake in Indian Railway Station Development Corp. Ltd, (IRSDC), the company tasked with redeveloping railway stations across the country.
  • RITES has also resumed operations at most of its offices and project sites after the government eased the covid-19 induced lockdown rules across the country.
  • It has achieved more than half of its capacity and will scale up its activities going forward.

Former SC Judge Justice Sikri Inaugurates Indian Dispute Resolution Centre

  • Former Supreme Court judge Justice A K Sikri has inaugurated the Indian Dispute Resolution Centre (IDRC), which provides a paperless dispute resolution environment.
  • The e-inauguration of IDRC centre offers offline as well as e-alternate dispute resolution (ADR) facility through its state-of-the-art e-arbitration, e-meditation and e-conciliation software portal.
  • The e-inauguration was followed by a panel discussion on ''Adhoc v. Institutional Dispute Resolution''.

Jahnabi Phookan Appointed as National President of FICCI FLO

  • Jahnabi Phookan has been appointed as National President of FICCI Ladies Organization (FLO), the oldest women-led and -focused business chamber of Southeast Asia and the women's wing of the apex chamber Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
  • She took over from outgoing National President Harjinder Kaur Talwar at the 36th FLO Annual Session - Rising Above Covid Challenges in the presence of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
  • FICCI FLO represents over 8000 women entrepreneurs and professionals across 17 chapters nationally and works aggressively towards promoting economic empowerment and equal opportunities for women.

World Bank Names Carmen Reinhart as Chief Economist and Vice President

  • The World Bank named former Bear Stearns executive Carmen Reinhart as its new vice president and chief economist, tapping an expert on financial crises who also serves on the advisory board of the New York Federal Reserve.
  • Reinhart, a professor at Harvard University, published a book entitled "This Time is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly," together with economist Kenneth Rogoff of Harvard University in 2009.

Andhra Pradesh Launches Mega Restart Package for MSMEs

  • As a lockdown exit plan, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy announced a mega boost for MSMEs with a Rs 1,110 crore restart package.
  • The government will be immediately releasing Rs 450 crore as the first installment which would benefit nearly 98,000 units. These units employ more than 10 lakh people who were facing hardships due to the lockdown.

Govt Notifies BS-VI Emission Norms for Quadricycles

  • The government has notified BS-VI emission norms for quadricycles, paving the way for higher production of the new category of vehicle that was introduced less than two years ago.
  • The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued notification regarding the emission norms for L7 (quadricycle) category for BS-VI.
  • These norms are applicable from the date of notification. This notification completes the process of BS-VI for all category vehicles in India.
  • The emission norms are on the lines of the European Union's World Motorcycle Test Cycle (WMTC).

WHO Adopts "Human Challenge Trial" to Develop New Vaccine

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) recently announced eight candidates to enter human trials. Several people step forward to participate in human challenge trial as the race to develop new vaccine for the virus is increasing.
  • The trial involves infecting volunteers intentionally with COVID-19 virus. This is done to speed up the process of vaccine development.
  • The main benefit of the human challenge trial is that it accelerates testing. Many efficacious vaccines shall be available more quickly. Also, the number of people required in phase 3 of these trials is less than the regular trials.

Muslims Celebrate Eid al-Fitr Amid Coronavirus

  • After a Ramadan marked by lockdowns and social distancing, Muslims around the world have begun celebrating Eid al-Fitr.
  • The "festival of the breaking of the fast" is one of Islam's two major holidays. It begins when the moon rises on the final day of Ramadan, a holy month of fasting.
  • Traditionally, whole communities turn out to attend Eid prayers at their local mosques.
  • But with many countries still under coronavirus restrictions, Eid will look very different for many people this year.
  • As the start of the festival depends on the sighting of the new moon, the first day of Eid varies between countries.
