India, Bangladesh Sign Pact to Operationalise 5 More Ports of Call, 2 New Routes

  • India and Bangladesh on Wednesday signed an agreement to operationalise five new ports of call and two new protocol routes to boost the bilateral trade.
  • High Commissioner of India in Bangladesh, Riva Ganguly Das, and Bangladesh Shipping Secretary Mohammad Mezbah Uddin Chowdhury signed the 2nd Addendum to the Protocol on Inland Water Transit and Trade in Dhaka.
  • With the signing of the pact, the ports of call between India and Bangladesh has increased to 11 from six earlier while two more extended ports of call have been added.

Venezuela Files Legal Claim with Bank of England Over Gold

  • Venezuela has launched legal proceedings against the Bank of England to try to force it to release €930m ($1bn; £820m) worth of Venezuelan gold.
  • The gold is being retained following British and US sanctions on Venezuela.
  • Venezuela says it wants the Bank of England to sell part of the Venezuelan gold reserves to use the funds to fight the spread of coronavirus.
  • It says it has agreed for the money to be sent directly to the UN to ensure it is not used for other purposes.

Palestinians Ending Accords with Israel and US' over Annexation Plan

  • Palestinian Authority President Mahmud Abbas has said he is ending "all agreements" with Israel and the United States in response to Israeli plans to annex parts of the occupied West Bank.
  • Israel would now have to "bear all responsibilities... as an occupying power", Mr Abbas said.
  • Similar warnings in the past have ultimately not been followed through.
  • Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to apply Israeli sovereignty to Jewish settlements and the Jordan Valley.

  • Consumers can buy this motor-insurance policy using their Flipkart app.
  • Bajaj Allianz General Insurance also offers mobile insurance on Flipkart.

Kotak Mahindra Bank Becomes First Indian Lender to Allow Video KYC

  • Kotak Mahindra Bank has introduced video-KYC facility for customers opening savings account on Kotak 811 - the banks digital banking platform. The private lender is the first Indian bank to offer video based "zero-contact" onboarding service.
  • The initiative is presently being launched on a pilot basis for savings accounts. 
  • With Video KYC, verification of documents, signature are completed via a video call with representative from the bank without any physical interface.

Coir Geo-Textiles to be Used in Rural Road Construction Under PMGSY-III

  • The government said coir geo-textiles will be used in the construction of rural roads under the third phase of Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY-III).
  • Coir geo-textiles are permeable fabric, which are natural, strong, highly durable, resistant to rots, moulds and moisture, and free from any microbial attack.
  • They will be used for construction of rural roads under the PMGSY-III, according to a communication from the National Rural Infrastructure Development Agency under Union Ministry of Rural Development.

NCDEX to Launch India's First Agri-Futures Index

  • Leading agri-commodity bourse NCDEX will launch the country's first agri-futures index, NCDEX AGRIDEX, on May 26, 2020.
  • According to the NCDEX, the AGRIDEX represents a basket of ten liquid agricultural commodities on the NCDEX and will serve as a broad benchmark for India's strong agricultural sector.
  • AGRIDEX is a return-based index with commodity wise and sector wise floors and caps, with no single commodity or sector dominating the index.

Defence Ministry Approves Procurement of 26 defence Items From Local Suppliers to Boost 'Make in India'

  • Ministry of Defence has approved procurement of 26 defence items only from local suppliers to boost Make in India.
  • The government has issued Public Procurement (Preference to Make in India) Order 2017 to encourage Make in India and to promote manufacturing and production of goods and services in India.
  • Under this order, Department of Defence Production (DDP) has so far notified 127 items where purchase preference is given to local suppliers.
  • In order to further encourage procurement from local suppliers, 26 items out of 127 already notified, have now been notified under the related clause of the Public Procurement (Preference to Make in India) Order.

Moeketsi Majoro Sworn in as Lesotho's New Prime Minister

  • Moeketsi Majoro (58) has been sworn in as Lesotho's new prime minister after Thomas Motsoahae Thabane, who has stepped down as prime minister following months of pressure after he was named as a suspect in the 2017 murder of his ex-wife Lipolelo.
  • Majoro, who was previously served as the finance minister of the country, took the oath at the king's palace in front of dignitaries.

Govinda Rajulu Chintala Appointed Nabard Chairman

  • The government has appointed Govinda Rajulu Chintala as chairman of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development. Chintala is currently chief general manager at Nabard.
  • The appointments committee of the union cabinet cleared Chintala's appointment for two years till his superannuation in July 2022.
  • It also cleared the appointment of Shaji KV, currently general manager at Canara Bank, as deputy managing director at Nabard for five years.

WWE's Shad Gaspard Dies Saving his Son

  • The body of former WWE star Shad Gaspard has been found on Venice Beach in Los Angeles after he went missing while swimming with his son.
  • The 39-year-old got caught in a rip tide with 10-year-old Aryeh on May 17, 2020.
  • His son was rescued but lifeguards couldn't save Shad.

World Metrology Day 2020

  • World Metrology Day is an annual celebration of the signature of the Metre Convention on 20 May 1875 by representatives of seventeen nations.
  • The Convention set the framework for global collaboration in the science of measurement and in its industrial, commercial and societal applications.
  • The original aim of the Metre Convention - the world-wide uniformity of measurement - remains as important today as it was in 1875.
  • The theme for World Metrology Day 2020 was Measurements for global trade.

National Anti-Terrorism Day is Observed on 21 May

  • National Anti-Terrorism Day is observed on 21 May every year in India. The day aims to raise awareness about the anti-social act of terrorism and its impact on human suffering and lives. 
  • The seventh Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on 21 May 1991. He was killed in Tamil Nadu in a campaign by the terrorist.
  • Following this tragedy, under the V.P. Singh government, the Centre has decided to observe 21 May as Anti Terrorism Day.

International Tea Day

  • International Tea Day is observed annually on May 21, according to the United Nations.
  • The concerning resolution was adopted on December 21, 2019 and calls on the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization to lead the observance of the Day.

Mee Annapurna Programe Launched for Farmers in Maharashtra

  • Mee Annapurna, an inclusive programe has been launched for the welfare of farmers and Bhoomiputras in Maharashtra.
  • The initiative was announced by Integrated Risk Insurance, an IRDA Licensed insurance intermediary.
  • Mee Annapurna will integrate three critical aspects of livelihood and comprehensive engagement. Elaborating on the scheme, Dr JH Rusat from Integrated Risk Insurance stated that the 'Mee Annapurna' programme involves three commandments - Expertise, Engagement and Entitlement. 
  • The programme is a part of the organisation's commitment as a Corporate Social Responsibility towards the welfare of the farmers and agriculture community in Maharashtra.

''Tatpar'' Scheme in Ranchi to Transport Migrant Workers

  • Over 140 migrant workers were sent to their native places on buses, a day after the ''Tatpar'' programme was launched by the Ranchi district administration to ease their tiresome journey on foot.
  • Under the programme, officials collect information about those walking on national highways or on any other road to provide them transport facilities.
  • Nodal Officer Sanjay Kumar made rounds on the Ring Road on the outskirts of the city and spotted the migrant workers, brought them to the Khadgada bus stand from where they were sent home.
  • They were given masks and food packets.
  • The administration also launched a helpline -- 1950 -- for the migrant workers to facilitate arranging of buses.

Gilgamesh Tablet: Bid to Confiscate Artefact from Museum of the Bible

  • US prosecutors are seeking to confiscate a rare ancient tablet from a Christian museum co-founded by the president of retailer Hobby Lobby.
  • The 3,500-year-old artefact, from what is now Iraq, bears text from the Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the world's oldest works of literature.
  • Prosecutors allege that an auction house deliberately withheld information about its origins.
  • Hobby Lobby said it was co-operating with government investigations.
  • It bought the tablet from the auction house in a private sale in 2014 for $1.67m (£1.36m) for display at the Museum of the Bible in Washington.
