Afghan President and Rival Announce Power-Sharing Deal

  • Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and political rival Abdullah Abdullah signed a power-sharing agreement.
  • The political deal would see Ghani remain president of the war-torn. The deal also calls for Abdullah to lead the country's National Reconciliation High Council, and he will be able to appoint half of Ghani's Cabinet and issue executive orders.
  • The Reconciliation Council has been given the authority to handle and approve all affairs related to Afghanistan's peace process. The council will have five deputies from both leaders' teams.

Israel Swears in New Gov't as Netanyahu Pledges Annexation Push

  • Israel's parliament has sworn in a new government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former rival Benny Gantz, ending the longest political crisis in the country's history.
  • After more than 500 days without a stable government and three inconclusive elections, lawmakers in the 120-seat Knesset approved a three-year coalition, with 73 voting for and 49 against. One member was absent. 

India Joins 61 Nations Seeking Probe Into Coronavirus Crisis

  • With the world battling hard to contain the spread of the novel COVID-19 virus, India has decided to join 61 nations calling for an independent inquiry into the World Health Organisation's (WHO) response to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a draft resolution proposed for 73rd World Health Assembly (WHA) meeting.
  • The 62 nations have also called the organisation to "identify the zoonotic source of the virus and the route of introduction to human population, including possible role of intermediate hosts" and to enable this through "collaborative field missions."

GCPL Acquires Balance 25% Stake in Kenya-Based Canon Chemicals

  • FMCG major Godrej Consumer Products Ltd (GCPL) announced acquisition of the balance 25 per cent stake in Kenya-based Canon Chemicals Ltd for an undisclosed sum.
  • Through this transaction, Canon Chemicals would now be a wholly-owned subsidiary of the company. The acquisition was made through its step down firm Godrej East Africa Holdings Ltd.
  • The Company through its wholly-owned subsidiary, has acquired the balance 25 per cent stake in Canon Chemicals Limited, said GCPL in a regulatory filing.
  • The Godrej Group firm had earlier acquired 75 per cent stake in Canon Chemicals Limited, Kenya, in 2016.

New Super-Earth with 617-Day Year Discovered

  • The discovery of a new, so-called "super-Earth" has just been announced by researchers, and it's about four times the mass of our home planet.
  • The discovery of the super-Earth was made thanks to an astronomical phenomenon known as gravitational microlensing.
  • And while the planet probably isn't habitable, that phenomenon is still an incredible manifestation of Einstein's general theory of relativity.
  • The discovery of the new super-Earth, dubbed OGLE-2018-BLG-0677, was outlined in a paper recently published in The Astronomical Journal.
  • The researchers involved with the study, including lead authors Dr. Antonio Herrera Martin and Associate Professor Michael Albrow, both at the University of Canterbury (UC) in New Zealand, made their discovery using a network of telescopes from across the globe.

  • India's space agency will tap startups to develop food and medicines for astronauts, better tools to access machines in a spacecraft and green engines for its maiden humanspace flight Gaganyaan-1.
  • It will also potentially help them build products and solutions that they can exploit commercially.
  • Isro identified a set of 17 technologies that it invited researchers to develop locally at lower costs for use in its Gaganyaan missions.

NBA Legend's Trainers Sell for Record $560,000

  • Basketball legend Michael Jordan's autographed trainers from 1985 sold for a record $560,000 (£463,000) in an online auction.
  • The Nike Air Jordan 1s, worn by Jordan during his rookie season with the Chicago Bulls, were expected to fetch between $100,00-$150,000 at Sotheby's.
  • The previous record was $437,500 for a pair of Nike's 1972 Moon Shoes.
  • Jordan wore mismatched trainers, with the left a size 13 and the right a size 13.5.
  • The Air Jordan 1s were sold by Jordan Geller, who founded the trainer museum Shoezeum in Las Vegas.

Centre Approves Modified DPR of Ujh Multipurpose Project in Jammu and Kashmir

  • The Centre approved to modification of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the Ujh multipurpose Project (MPP) located on the river Ujh, main tributaries of river Ravi in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir at the estimated cost of Rs.9,167 crore.
  • The advisory committee of Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation (DoWR, RD & GR) approved the DPR of Ujh MPP project chaired by Union Secretary U P Singh.

Indian Army's Only Cavalry Unit Set to Replace its Horses With Tanks

  • One of the world's last remaining horse-mounted cavalry regiments may be riding into the sunset. The Indian Army's only mounted cavalry regiment is set to say goodbye to its horses, with the government approving a proposal to equip the 61st Cavalry with tanks.
  • The famous 61st Cavalry is being converted into a regular armoured regiment on the basis of a recommendation made by the Lieutenant General DB Shekatkar (retd) committee in a report on sharpening the army's combat edge and trimming its revenue expenditure.

Army Considers 'tour-of-duty' Model to Allow Youth to Serve for 3 Years

  • The Indian Army is examining a proposal that seeks to allow the country's youth to serve the military for three years under a new "tour of duty" (ToD) model similar to the short-service commission that allows officers to serve for 10 to 14 years.
  • If the proposal is accepted, the army could implement the ToD model - essentially an internship after military training - on trial basis for both officers and other ranks in a limited number of vacancies.

Mexican Journalist Killed in 'Armed Attack'

  • A journalist has been killed in an armed attack in northern Mexico, local authorities say - the third reporter to be killed in the country this year (2020).
  • Jorge Armenta, the director of media outlet Medios Obson in Ciudad Obregon, was under government protection after receiving death threats.
  • More than 140 journalists have been killed in Mexico since the year 2000.
  • Mexico has been described as the deadliest country for reporters outside a war zone by the journalism advocacy group Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

'PM eVIDYA' for Digital Education, Manodarpan for Psychological Counselling to be Launched

  • Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that 'PM eVIDYA' programme for multi-mode access to digital education will be launched immediately and that 100 universities will be permitted to start online courses by May 30, 2020.
  • 'PM eVIDYA' programme will consist of 'Diksha' involving e-content and QR coded energized textbooks for all grades and will be called as 'one nation, one digital platform'.
  • Besides this, one earmarked TV channel per class from 1 to 12, also named as 'one class, one channel', will also be rolled out.
  • It will also envisage extensive use of radio, community radio and podcasts and special e-content for visually and hearing impaired.
