India up at 74th Place on WEF's Global Energy Transition Index

  • India has moved up two positions to rank 74th on a global 'Energy Transition Index' with improvements on all key parameters of economic growth, energy security and environmental sustainability, the World Economic Forum (WEF) said.
  • Releasing the annual rankings, the Geneva-based international organisation for public-private cooperation said Covid-19 will compromise the transition to clean energy without an urgent stakeholder action as unprecedented disruptions due to the pandemic threaten this transition.
  • In its report, the WEF said its study measuring readiness for clean energy transition in 115 economies showed that 94 have made progress since 2015, but environmental sustainability continues to lag.
  • Sweden has topped the Energy Transition Index (ETI) for the third consecutive year and is followed by Switzerland and Finland in the top three.

  • The two men have agreed to push forward with a controversial plan to annex part of the occupied West Bank.

BUSINESS AND ECONOMY

March Industrial Output Contracts 16.7%

  • India's retail inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index fell to 5.84% in the month of April as compared to 5.91% reported in the month of March while industrial output as measured by IIP contracted by 16.7% in the month of March 2020 as compared to the year-ago period.
  • It may be noted that the sharp contraction in March IIP was just because of one week of lockdown, which was announced on March 25. The lockdown announced to contain the spread of the virus led to huge disruption in activity across sectors. Small and medium scale businesses saw massive disruption with factories being shut down.
  • The contraction in IIP was mainly due to lower output from mining, manufacturing and electricity sector due to the nationwide lockdown, government data showed on Tuesday. In the corresponding month of last year, IIP had grown by 2.7%.

South Africa's MeerKAT Solves Mystery of 'X-galaxies'

  • Many galaxies far more active than the Milky Way have enormous twin jets of radio waves extending far into intergalactic space. Normally these go in opposite directions, coming from a massive black hole at the centre of the galaxy. However, a few are more complicated and appear to have four jets forming an 'X' on the sky.
  • Exquisite new MeerKAT observations of one such galaxy, PKS 2014-55, strongly favor the latter explanation as they show material "turning the corner" as it flows back towards the host galaxy; the results have just been accepted for publication in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
  • This work was carried out by a team from the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO), the (US) National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), the University of Pretoria, and Rhodes University.

Astronomers Discover 'One in a Million' Super-Earth

  • The newly discovered planet is among only a handful of extra-solar planets that have been detected with both sizes and orbits close to that of Earth.
