Indian Scientists Discover 3 New Species of Fishes Under Genus 'Dawkinsia'

  • Scientists from the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) based in Mumbai (Maharashtra), the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune (Maharashtra), have jointly discovered a three new fish species under the genus 'Dawkinsia' namely Dawkinsia apsara, Dawkinsia austellus, Dawkinsia crassa.
  • The 1st species 'Dawkinsia apsara', found in Karnataka's Sita and Sowparnika rivers, has been christened after the beautiful celestial nymphs in Hindu mythology.
  • The 2nd species 'Dawkinsia austellus', found from the Muvattupuzha river in Kerala, has been named referring to the Latin word for 'South' and refers to the distribution range of the species in Southern Kerala.
  • The 3rd species 'Dawkinsia crassa', found in the Netravati river of Coastal Karnataka,  has been named after the Latin word for 'round/thick' referring to the rounded appearance of the fish.

Deepa Malik Announces Retirement, Will Head India's Paralympic Committee

  • Deepa Malik, India's lone woman Paralympics silver medallist, announced that she will be hanging her boots from active sports in order to serve as the president of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) in accordance with the National Sports Code.
  • The 49-year-old took to Twitter and clarified that she was declaring her retirement from the sport for her affiliation with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS).

Sania Mirza first Indian to win Fed Cup Heart Award

  • Tennis player Sania Mirza became the first Indian to win the Fed Cup Heart Award for her successful return to the court post motherhood. Sania won the award for Asia/Oceania zone after securing a whopping 10,000 plus votes out of the total 16,985 cast for this year's three regional Group I nominees.
  • The Fed Cup Heart Award winners were determined via online voting by fans which went on for a week starting from May 1, 2020. Sania's vote share of over 60 per cent of the total votes is a testimony to the global popularity of the Indian star at the Fed Cup competition.

Yu Yangyi Helps China Win Nations Cup; India Fifth

  • China won the inaugural $180,000 FIDE Chess.com Online Nations Cup following a 2-2 draw against USA.
  • China, which lost to USA in the concluding league match, was declared the winner on the basis of topping the points table in the round-robin stage.
  • China won $48,000, USA $36,000 and others received $24,000 each.
  • India concluded its campaign by playing to its seeding and finished fifth, ahead of sixth seed Rest of the World.
  • With Viswanathan Anand taking a break on the final day of the league stage, India lost 1.5-2.5 to third seed Russia, which eventually took the fourth spot.

MSME Ministry Launches CHAMPIONS Portal

  • Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, MSME Ministry has launched CHAMPIONS portal www.Champions.gov.in, a technology driven control room-cum-management information system. The initiative is aimed at assisting Indian MSMEs to march into big league as national and global champions.
  • The CHAMPIONS stands for Creation and Harmonious Application of Modern Processes for Increasing the Output and National Strength. The portal is basically for making the smaller units big by solving their grievances, encouraging, supporting, helping and handholding.

ICMR, NCDC to Initiate a Population-Based Sero-Survey in Selected Districts

  • Indian Council of Medical Research, ICMR and National Centre for Disease Control are going to initiate a population-based sero-survey in selected districts in collaboration with key stakeholders and State Health Departments.
  • The objective of this survey is to monitor the trend in prevalence of COVID-19 infection at district level.
  • In the survey, 200 samples per district per week and 800 samples per district per month shall be taken. From each district, 10 health facilities including six public and four private health facilities shall be selected. Population groups including outpatient attendees, pregnant women and health care workers will be covered under the survey.
  • The samples will be tested in a one-time pool of 25 and result of sample pooling is only for surveillance purposes. It should not be used for diagnosis of individual patients. In addition to throat, nasal swabs, blood samples should be collected for detecting IgG antibodies for ELISA testing.
  • In subsequent rounds, IgG ELISA based testing of serum samples will replace RT-PCR based testing for surveillance purpose.

Narinder Batra's Term as FIH President Extended to May 2021

  • Narinder Batra will remain President of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) until May 2021. The FIH said in a statement while announcing the postponement of the 47th FIH Congress that the terms of Batra and the Executive Board members which were due to end in October 2020 have now been extended.
  • The Presidential election for the world body had been due to take place at this year's Congress in New Delhi but it has now been pushed back in the wake of COVID-19 crisis.

Grammy winning-singer Betty Wright dies at 66

  • Iconic soul and R&B singer Betty Wright has died after a battle with cancer. She was 66. The Grammy winner passed away in her hometown Miami, Florida.
  • Wright, whose real name was Bessie Regina Norris, was born in 1953. She started singing as part of her siblings' musical group called the 'Echoes of Joy', but she rose to fame in the 1970s. The singer was a member of the gospel ensemble until they parted ways when she was 11, leading her to embrace R&B music.

17 Laureates Conferred with DW Freedom of Speech Award 2020

  • On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day 2020, 17 journalists from 14 countries have been named for Deutsche Welle Freedom of Speech Award 2020, Journalist Siddharth Varadarajan from India among them, who have disappeared or been arrested or threatened because of their reporting on the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • From China, three journalists have been selected for this award, while from Turkey two journalists are named for the same.
  • They are being honoured on behalf of global media professionals who are publishing independent information about the coronavirus pandemic while working under difficult conditions.
  • Siddharth Varadarajan, one of the founding editors of non-profit online newspage The Wire, was handed a notice for appearance by a police team on April 10, 2020 following a story about a politician violating COVID-19 guidelines by participating in a religious ceremony. The Wire was accused of "causing a riot" and "leading to panic."

TRIFED, AOL ink MoU to Promote Tribal Enterprises

  • Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India, TRIFED under Ministry of Tribal Affairs and Art Of Living, AOL Foundation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate in programmes of each organisation for promoting Tribal Enterprises.
  • The Art of Living Foundation has agreed to provide Free Ration Kits to Needy Tribes India Artisans.
  • TRIFED Regional Offices have compiled the list of needy tribal artisans and have identified 9,409 needy tribal artisans located across the country for distribution of ration kits under I Stand With Humanity campaign of AOL. This is being coordinated with the AOL offices in all States.

Atal Pension Yojana Completes Five Years, Achieves 2.23 Crore Enrolment

  • The flagship social security scheme of Government of India 'Atal Pension Yojana' (APY) has completed five years of its implementation. Launched on 9 May, 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi aimed to deliver income security to the old age. It particularly offered assistance to the workers in the unorganised sector and guarantee of minimum pension to the citizens after 60 years of age.
  • Within five years of its implementation the scheme registered 2.23 crore workers and addressing the challenges of rapidly increasing aging population of India. Apart from the enrolments, the scheme has been implemented comprehensively across the country covering all states and Union Territories with male to female subscription ratio of 57:43.

MP Home Minister Launches Country's First Ever 'FIR Aapke Dwar' Yojana

  • Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Dr Narottam Mishra launched country's first ever 'FIR Aapke Dwar Yojana' in Bhopal.
  • Madhya Pradesh is the first state in the country to implement such an innovative scheme. Launching the scheme at the new Police Control Room, Dr Narottam Mishra said that now people would not be required to visit police station to lodge an FIR.
  • 'FIR Aapke Dwar' scheme has been started as a pilot project in 23 Police Stations including one urban and one rural Police Station at 11 Divisional Headquarters.Director General of Police Vivek Johari informed that Dial 100 vehicle would have trained Head Constables to lodge FIR. FIRs in complaints of general nature will be lodged on the spot. In case of serious complaints, guidance will be sought from senior officers.
