Vista Equity Partners Picks 2.32% Stake in Jio Platforms

  • Vista Equity Partners, a US-based private equity firm that runs the world's largest exclusively tech-focused fund, picked up a 2.32 percent stake in Jio Platforms for Rs. 11,367 crore, making it the third high-profile investment in the Reliance Industries Ltd  (RIL) unit and underlining its status as a next-generation software and platform company.
  • This investment values Jio Platforms at an equity value of Rs 4.91 lakh crore and an enterprise value of Rs 5.16 lakh crore. 

India INX, NSE IFSC Launch Rupee-USD Derivative Trading

  • Two exchanges at International Financial Services Centre in Gift City, India INX and NSE IFSC, launched trading in rupee-USD derivative contracts to enable participants to hedge, trade and settle in the dollar.
  • With the launch, trades that have been migrated to other international financial centres will now bring rupee trading home.
  • Besides, trading of INR-USD futures and options will enable participants to hedge, trade and settle in USD with market rules and ecosystem at GIFT City IFSC that is at par with other global markets.
  • The launch was done virtually by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, where she rang the bell electronically and declared Rupee-Dollar Futures and Options contract open for trading on India INX and NSE IFSC.

Scientists Found a Seasonal Advancement in 220 Surge-Type Glaciers

  • Scientists from Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG), Dehradun have found a seasonal advancement in 220 surge-type glaciers in the Karakoram Range of Ladakh through a detailed assessment of some major surging glaciers of the Karakoram range using satellite images and thermal data.
  • The scientist carried out a detailed assessment of some major surging glaciers of the Karakoram range using multi-temporal and multi-sensor satellite images including Landsat 8 OLI, ASTER and Sentinel-2, Digital Elevation Models (DEM) and thermal data.

China Launches Its Most Powerful Rocket Yet

  • China launched Long March-5B, its largest carrier rocket, into orbit May 5, 2020. 
  • The successful launch comes after two failed launches this year.
  • China has big plans for the moon and Mars; they'll be launching a Mars lander and rover in July and a lunar mission later this year.

Jharkhand Bans 11 Pan Masala Brands to Protect Public Health

  • Jharkhand banned manufacture, sale and storage of 11 brands of pan masala for a year saying these products contain a chemical which is harmful to the heart and can cause various diseases.
  • The authorities collected 41 samples of various brands of pan masala from different districts and tested them to check it they contain magnesium carbonate, which is banned under the Food Safety Act, 2006, as one of the ingredients.

MoD Signs With Tata Power SED for Modernisation of Air Field Infrastructure

  • Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a contract with M/s Tata Power SED (TPSED) for Modernisation of Air Field Infrastructure (MAFI) of 37 airfields for the Indian Air Force (IAF), Indian Navy (IN) and Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on 8 May, 2020.
  • The cost of the contract is worth around Rs.1,200 crore.
  • The proposal regarding the contract was approved by the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The contract will boost the domestic industry amid the COVID-19 situation.

  • Yes Bank has appointed Neeraj Dhawan as its chief risk officer with immediate effect.
  • The board of directors, vide their resolution dated May 1, 2020, appointed Neeraj Dhawan as the chief risk officer of the bank for a period of three years.
  • He assumed charge in place of Ashish Agarwal.

Birth Anniversary of Maharana Pratap Singh I is celebrated on 9 May

  • Maharana Pratap Jayanti is observed on May 9 every year to celebrate the birth of the 13th Rajput king of Mewar - Pratap Singh I.
  • Pratap Singh I, who was popularly known as Maharana Pratap, was born to King Udai Singh II and Queen Jaiwanta Bai.
  • In 1572, he ascended to the throne after the demise of his father.

Cooperative Banks Come Under SARFAESI Act, 2002

  • A five judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court passed a ruling that co­operative banks established under a State law or multi-State level societies come under the Securitisation and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Security Interest (SARFAESI) Act of 2002.
  • In this regard, the Section 2(1)(c) of SARFAESI Act of 2002 empowers the cooperative banks with recovery procedures including seize and sell defaulters' assets.The recovery procedure u/s (under section) 13 of the Act is also applicable to such banks.

Coir Board sign with IIT Madras MoU to establish CoE for Coir applications

  • Coir Board signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras, to establish a Centre of Excellence for Coir Applications.
  • The Centre of Excellence aims at furthering the research work done so far in the coir sector with the support of IIT, Madras.
  • It will also support the development of relevant technology and evolve standards for production and processing through specific projects and monitor research projects.
  • Coir Board will provide a financial assistance of five crore rupees initially for a period of two years for the establishment and running of the Centre of Excellence. In all, 27 areas of Research and Development have been identified for the coir industry which will be taken up by this Centre of Excellence.
