Indian-Origin Girl Vaneeza Names NASA's 1st Mars Helicopter

  • A 17-year old Indian-origin girl Vaneeza Rupani has named the 1st helicopter to be built for Mars as 'Ingenuity' (in Hindi it means the inventive character of a person). She received this credit when she submitted her essay in NASA's (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) 'Name the Rover' competition.
  • Before this new name, It was just named as "Mars Helicopter".
  • Along with  Rupani , a total of 28, 000 students from each state and territory of the US (United States) participated in this competition.

Sania Mirza, First Indian To Be Nominated for Fed Cup Heart Award

  • Indian tennis star Sania Mirza became the first Indian to be nominated for the Fed Cup Heart Award from the Asia/Oceania zone along with Indonesia's Priska Medelyn Nugrorho.
  • Sania had recently made a comeback to Fed Cup after four years.

Australia Replace India at Top of World Test Rankings

  • Australia have returned to the top of the Test rankings for the first time in four years.
  • Justin Langer's side replace India, despite having not won an away series since beating New Zealand in 2016.
  • The Black Caps move up to second as India slip to third, with England fourth on the International Cricket Council's list.
  • Australia also head the Twenty20 table, while 2019 World Cup winners England remain top in one-day cricket.
  • India had been top of the Test rankings since October 2016.

Noted Playwright Bijay Mishra Passed Away

  • Noted playwright, dramatist, scriptwriter and film director Bijay Mishra of Odisha passed away at the age of 83 due to age-related ailments in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. He was born at Santaragadia village in Balasore district, Odisha on July 16, 1936.
  • Mishra began playwright from 1960 and his first play 'Janani' was staged in Annapurna Theatre, Cuttack, Odisha. He was also a mainstream script writer in Odia Cinema & TV Industry.

Ramesh Babu Appointed As NTPC Director Operations

  • State-owned power giant NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation Limited) appointed Ramesh Babu V as director (operations). He was the successor of Prakash Tiwari who retired on April 30, 2020.
  • He joined NTPC as an executive (trainee – 12th batch) in 1987 and has more than 32 years of experience in managing large power stations in the areas of operations and maintenance, renovation and modernisation of old units as well as in the domains of efficiency & systems improvement of thermal plants.

Algerian Singer Hamid Cheriet - Idir - dies in France at 70

  • Algerian singer Hamid Cheriet, better known as Idir, has died in France at the age of 70.
  • The tireless champion of the Kabyle and Berber cultures died of pulmonary disease.
  • Idir became internationally famous with his lullaby "Vava Inouva" in the 1970s and made a comeback in 1993.
  • In a tribute to the singer, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune called him an icon of Algerian art and said: "Algeria loses one of its monuments".

International Astronomy Day 2020

  • The International Astronomy Day is celebrated twice a year (bi-annual), once in the spring(in 2020- May 2) & another in autumn(in 2020- October 5).
  • On this day, professional and amateur astronomers all over the world share their great field with the Universe to the public, through observing sessions, displays and information booths in malls, science centres and planetariums to increase public awareness about astronomy and the universe.

International Dawn Chorus Day

  • The first Sunday in the month of May (May 3) is celebrated as International Dawn Chorus Day every year.
  • International broadcasters from about 70 countries collaborate to air a live seven-hour celebration of birdsong in which listeners are taken through an aural journey, as the great wave of birdsong gradually moves from east to west with the rising sun.

HP Govt to Launch Employment Scheme for Urban Areas

  • Looking to revive the coronavirus-hit economy of the state, the Himachal Pradesh government decided to launch a programme guaranteeing at least 120 days'' employment to those living in urban areas.
  • The cabinet decided to launch the Mukhya Mantri Shahari Rojgar Guarantee Yojna, under which 120 days'' assured employment will be provided to people living in urban areas.

Culture Minister Releases E-Book "Prof. B. B. Lal-India Rediscovered"

  • On the occasion of centenary year of great archaeologist Professor B. B. Lal, Union Culture Minister Shri Prahlad Singh Patel released an e-book "Prof. B. B. Lal -India Rediscovered" in New Delhi.
  • Secretary, Ministry of Culture Shri Anand Kumar was also present on this occasion.
  • Prof Lal was born on May 2,1921 in village Baidora, District Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh.
  • The book is a centenary special edition which has been prepared by Ministry of culture in collaboration with Prof B B Lal Centenary Celebration Committee.
  • The book is a tribute from Ministry of culture for his immense contribution to the field of archaeology.
