PM Modi Most Popular Leader On Facebook, Trump Leads Interactions

  • With around 45 million likes on his personal page, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi continues to be the most popular world leader on Facebook, while US President Donald Trump dominates the rankings for the most interactions even as leaders across the world grow their audience on the social networking platform amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Trump is the second most popular world leader on Facebook, with around 27 million likes and Jordan's Queen Rania is in third position with 16.8 million likes, according to in the latest 2020 "World Leaders on Facebook" rankings by leading global communications agency BCW (Burson Cohn & Wolfe).

Australia and New Zealand mark Anzac Day in driveways

  •  Thousands of people across Australia and New Zealand have stood outside their homes at dawn to mark Anzac Day, after being urged to pay tribute even amid the coronavirus lockdown.
  • Crowds usually gather for services, but these were cancelled last month amid wider restrictions on gatherings.
  • Instead people were urged to hold a candle in their driveways and live stream services.
  • The day of remembrance is a hugely important event for both nations.
  • It marks the anniversary of the first campaign that led to major casualties for the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps (Anzac) during World War One.

Saudi Arabia To Abolish Flogging - Supreme Court

  • The directive from the Gulf kingdom's Supreme Court says flogging will be replaced by imprisonment or fines.
  •  Saudi Arabia is to abolish flogging as a form of punishment, according to a legal document seen by media outlets.
  • It says this is an extension of human rights reforms brought by King Salman and his son, the country's de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
  • Saudi Arabia has been criticised over the jailing of dissidents, and the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Scientists Discover 19 Interstellar Asteroids Between Jupiter and Neptune

  •  Nineteen asteroids that once belonged to a distant star system have been found orbiting the sun between Jupiter and Neptune.
  • They have been circling the sun for more than 4.5 billion years, since the very inception of the solar system. 
  • Astronomers believe the space rocks were ripped from their original location as the universe expanded and the sun grew rapidly, creating its own gravitational pull.  
  • The enormous force of the burgeoning star sucked the rocks into the formative solar system and they have remained here ever since, astronomers believe.

China Names Its First Mars Mission 'Tianwen-1'

  • China has named its first Mars exploration mission as 'Tianwen-1'. The announcement was made on April 24, 2020, the same day when the nation celebrated 'Space Day' to mark the 50th anniversary of the launch of its first-ever satellite 'Dong Fang Hong-1' in 1970. 
  • China's Mars mission will include an orbiter, a lander and a rover. The mission is expected to be launched later this year. With the mission, China aims to catch up with the other nations that have launched successful mars missions including the United States, European Union, Russia and India.

CISF Launches 'E-Office' App For Movement Of Files

  • An e-office application, that enables movement of files and documents without physical touch, has been launched for usage in the 1.62 lakh personnel-strong Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to prevent coronavirus infection.
  • The application called 'e-karyalay' (electronic office) has been designed by the in-house technical team of the force.

Former IAS officer Sanjay Kothari takes oath as CVC

  •  Retired IAS officer Sanjay Kothari, who was secretary to President Ram Nath Kovind, took oath as the new Chief Vigilance Commissioner (CVC).
  • Kothari, an officer from the 1978 batch from Haryana, was named as new CVC by a high powered committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February, 2020. In the same meeting, ex-Broadcasting Secretary Bimal Julka was appointed as the next Chief Information Commissioner (CIC).

  •  In order to raise awareness of the role of the representatives and delegates of the Member States to the United Nations, the UN General Assembly has proclaimed 25 April as International Delegate's Day.
  • The 2020 International Delegate's Day is special for two reasons. First, 25 April 2020 is the first time that International Delegate's Day is observed. Second, the 2020 observance also marks the milestone seventy-fifth anniversary of the San Francisco Conference, an event that laid the foundations of the United Nations.

9 Lakh Women SHGs in AP Now Get Zero Interest Loans

  • The women Self Help Groups (SHGs) in Andhra Pradesh will now get loans at zero per cent interest.
  • Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy formally launched the scheme in Amaravati by releasing Rs. 1,400 crore to benefit 8.78 lakh SHGs.
  • Under the scheme, interest component will be borne by the government to the tune of Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 40,000.

Govt To Set Up Rs 1-Trn Fund To Clear Pending MSME Payments

  •  The government will set up a Rs 1 trillion fund to repay outstanding payments to MSMEs owed by the central and state government undertakings as well as major industries.
  • Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said he has devised a scheme to set up the fund, and the proposal may be placed before the Cabinet for approval once the Finance Ministry gives its go-ahead.

E-Gram Swaraj Portal & Swamitva Scheme Launched

  • Narendra Modi on April 24, 2020 launched two portals E-Gram Swaraj Portal & Swamitva Scheme for the upliftment of the rural areas of India. The portal was launched on the occasion of National Panchayati Raj Day 2020 through videoconferencing between PM Modi and Sarpanches of village panchayats.                
  • While launching the app, the Prime Minister stated that E Gram Swaraj marks the complete digitization of villages and rural areas. The portal can be accessed at egramswaraj.gov.in and is also available as a mobile app. Along with the portal, PM Modi launched the Swamitva Scheme for the mapping of properties in villages.

NASA Develops New Ventilator Tailored Specifically To Treat COVID-19 Patients

  • NASA engineers have developed a new, easy-to-build high-pressure ventilator tailored specifically to treat COVID-19 patients.  The US space agency said that the device, called VITAL (Ventilator Intervention Technology Accessible Locally), passed a critical test at the Icahn School of Medicine in New York, an epicentre of COVID-19 in the US. 
  • NASA added that VITAL is designed to treat patients with milder symptoms, thereby keeping country's limited supply of traditional ventilators available for patients with more severe COVID-19 symptoms.

Shilpa Medicare Share Price Gains Nearly 3% On Launch Of Anti-Cancer Drug

  • The company has launched the Indian branded generic of Dasatinib, an anticancer drug with a brand name "DASASHIL".
  •  Shilpa Medicare share price rose nearly 3 percent in early trade on April 24, 2020  after the company launched its anti-cancer drug.
  • The drug is available with all dosage strength 20/ 50/ 70/ 100 mg tablets, used for the treatment of Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML).

First Day Of Holy Month Of Ramzan Observed All Over Country

  • Muslims observed first day of holy month of Ramzan (April 25) across the country. The worshippers offered special daily night prayers called "Taraweeh" at their homes in compliance with nationwide lockdown norms amid COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Ramzan is the ninth month of Islamic calendar and Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated at the culmination of this month.
