South Korean President Moon Jae-In's Ruling Party Sweeps Elections Amid Pandemic

  • South Korean President Moon Jae-in's party has won a landslide victory in the country's parliamentary elections held amid the coronavirus pandemic. Moon's Democratic Party and its smaller allies won 180 seats in the 300-seat National Assembly.
  • The country held the elections despite once being second to only China in the number of Covid-19 infections. South Korea has since managed to flatten its transmission curve with aggressive testing, tracking of infected persons and observing social distancing. The elections were widely seen as a referendum on the government's approach to the outbreak.

Trump Administration, Congress Near 450 Billion Deal For Small Businesses, Hospitals & Corona Testing

  •  In the United States, the Trump Administration and the Congress are nearing an agreement on an aid package of up to 450 billion dollars to boost a small-business loan programme that has run out of money and add funds for hospitals and COVID-19 testing. 
  • President Donald Trump said, he is getting close to a deal. With small-business owners reeling during a Corona virus outbreak that has shuttered much economic activity, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said earlier that he was hopeful of a deal that could pass Congress quickly and get the Small Business Administration programme back up by midweek.

UK's Government Unveils £1.3bn Scheme To Help Start-Ups

  • The government has announced a £1.25bn package to support innovative new companies that are not eligible for existing coronavirus rescue schemes.
  • It will match up to £250m of private investment and add £550m to an existing loan and grant scheme for smaller firms that focus on research and development.
  • Adding it up, that totals £800m of new money to support fledgling firms.
  • Chancellor Rishi Sunak said start-ups would help power the UK's growth after the coronavirus crisis.

Eros International Announces All-Share Merger With STX Entertainment

  • In a first of its kind deal, Indian movie producer and distributor Eros International announced an all-share merger with Hollywood's STX Entertainment to create an equally-held global entertainment company.
  • The six-year-old, privately-held STX has done 34 movies including 'Hustlers' and 'Bad Moms' which have cumulatively grossed $1.5 billion, while Eros focuses primarily on the Indian and diaspora markets by producing movies and distributing them  through an OTT platform.

Equitas Small Finance Bank Allows Customers To Open Fixed Deposits And Savings Accounts Online

  • Small finance bank, Equitas Small Finance Bank, has said that new customers can 'self-onboard' to open a savings account or invest in a fixed deposit with no physical contact or branch visits during the on-going coronavirus lockdown.
  • Customers can open a 'Selfe Fixed Deposit' online for up to Rs 90,000 by using their Aadhaar Number and PAN. The bank's website states that you can complete the process in three minutes.

Govt Increases Loss Coverage For Micro Loan Defaults To 75% From 50% Earlier

  • The finance ministry has increased coverage of a lender's loss in case of loan default under the Credit Guarantee Fund for Micro Units (CGFMU) scheme to 75%, from 50% earlier.
  • The amendment to the scheme is aimed at incentivising lending to micro businesses which are bearing the brunt of the coronavirus outbreak and the ensuing nationwide lockdown.

Gravitational Waves Reveal Unprecedented Collision Of Heavy And Light Black Holes

  • The gravitational waves from a black-hole merger typically ripple at twice the frequency that the black holes go around each other.
  • Researchers with the world's gravitational wave detectors said today they had picked up vibrations from a cosmic collision that harmonized with the opening notes of an Elvis Presley hit. 
  • The source was the most exotic merger of two black holes detected yet—a pair in which one weighed more than three times as much as the other. Because of the stark mass imbalance, the collision generated gravitational waves at multiple frequencies, in a harmony Elvis fans would recognize. The chord also confirms a prediction of Einstein's theory of gravity, or general relativity.

OIC Urges India To Take 'Urgent Steps' To Protect Rights Of Muslims

  • The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) urged India to take "urgent steps" to protect the rights of its minority Muslim community and stop the incidents of "Islamophobia" in the country.
  • The OIC's Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission in a tweet also said the Indian media was negatively profiling the Muslims and subjecting them to discrimination.

Goa is now COVID-19-free

  • Goa is now COVID-19-free, all seven patients have tested negative. They will be quarantined at government facility and later at home. Goa has in all tested over 800 people of whom seven had come positive.
  • The Chief Minister said that from April 20, 2020 the government would scrutinise reports of its three-day door-to-door citizens survey done and decide on testing people for COVID-19 wherever felt necessary.

Iran warns US Navy over Gulf incident

  •  Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has accused the US of giving a "Hollywood version of events" over an incident in the Gulf this week.
  • The US said Iranian vessels had conducted "harassing" approaches of six of its ships.
  • But the IRGC said it had increased patrols in the Gulf after the US Navy blocked the path of an Iranian ship earlier.
  • Tensions rose after the US killed an Iranian general in Iraq in January, 2020.
  • The IRGC's statement said that US forces had blocked one of its ships in two separate incidents in early April, 2020 using "dangerous behaviour while ignoring warnings".

Dipankar Datta named as Bombay HC Chief Justice

  • The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India Sharad A. Bobde, has recommended the name of Calcutta High Court judge Justice Dipankar Datta for appointment as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.
  • Justice Datta is the brother-in-law of former Supreme Court judge Justice Amitava Roy. Justice (retired) Roy was the puisne judge on the Bench that held former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and her aide Sasikala Natarajan guilty in a disproportionate assets case.
  • Justice Datta's father was also a former judge of the Calcutta High Court. Justice Datta was elevated to the Bench of the Calcutta High Court as a permanent judge on June 22, 2006. He is now Judge Two.

44th session of the World Heritage Committee

  • The 44th session of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO was scheduled to be held the city of Fuzhou, Fujian province, China June 29-July 9, 2020. 
  • In light of recent developments in the world related to pandemic COVID-19, UNESCO decided that the event will be postponed to a later date. Consultations are currently under way to determine the exact dates of the session.
  • The event is notable for its adoption of new world heritage sites as well as the potential for delisting sites that are not fulfilling their commitments.

FM Nirmala Sitharaman attends 101st meeting of IMF-World Bank's Development Committee

  • Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman attended the 101st meeting of IMF-World Bank's Development Committee. The Development Committee meeting of World Bank-International Monetary Fund was held via video-conferencing on 17th April 2020. At the meeting, IMF chief Kristalina Georgiev said that the World is headed for 'severe recession' in 2020.
  • According to the details shared by the ministry, the key agenda of the meeting was to evaluate and discuss the impact of COVID-19 and the 'Great Lockdown' announced across the globe by major economies of the world as a precautionary measure to curb its spread. 

April 19 is observed as World Liver Day

  • The World Liver Day (WLD) is observed every year on April 19 to build awareness and understanding importance of liver in human body and how liver ailments are treated. As per World Health Organisation (WHO), liver diseases are 10th most common cause of death in India.
  • The liver, which measures about 1,00 grams in weight and 15 cm in length, is the second largest organ and is key player in our body's digestive system.
  • It is responsible for the synthesis of various proteins, coagulation factors, cholesterol, triglycerides and bile including glycogenesis.
  • It is also responsible for detoxifications of drugs, alcohol and control of infections.

Centre releases 7,300 crore rupees to States & UTs under MGNREGA

  • Centre has released 7,300 crore rupees to the States and Union Territories under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme to liquidate pending dues of last financial year but also the wage dues for the first fortnight of 2020-21.
  • Rural Development Minister Narendra Singh Tomar conducted a detailed review of all flagship schemes of the Rural Development.
  • He desired that MGNREGA works in Non-Containment Areas with adequate focus on social distancing, must be resumed in an efficient manner. The Minister said, the focus should be on creating durable assets relating to irrigation and water conservation.

Rajasthan First In Country To Start Rapid Testing For Covid-19

  • Rajasthan became the first state in the country to carry out rapid testing for Covid-19. 
  • The health department started rapid tests for Covid-19 at the urban primary health centre of Topkhana Desh (also known as Jaju Dispensary) in the city.
  • This test will be done at a large scale to assess the prevalence of Covid-19 in hotspots, both in the containment and buffer zones around clusters.
