  • UN experts have recommended blacklisting 14 vessels for violating sanctions against North Korea in a report that accuses the country of increasing illegal coal exports, imports of petroleum products and continuing with cyber attacks on financial institutions and cryptocurrency exchanges to gain illicit revenue.
  • The report accussed North Korea of importing luxury vehicles, watches and liquor and other sanctioned items including robotic machinery, and continuing to illegally access international banking channels mainly by using third party intermediaries.

Matterhorn Mountain In Swiss Alps Lights Up With Indian Flag In Show Of Solidarity

  • Switzerland has expressed solidarity with India in its fight against the coronavirus pandemic by projecting the tricolour on the famous Matterhorn mountain in the Swiss Alps to give "hope and strength" to all Indians. 
  • Swiss light artist Gerry Hofstetter has been lighting up the 4,478-meter pyramidal peak straddling between Switzerland and Italy with spectacular displays of flags of different countries and messages of hope as part of a nightly series.

TVS Acquires Britain's Most Iconic Sporting Motorcycle Brand 'Norton'

  • TVS Motor Company announced the acquisition of the United Kingdom's most iconic sporting motorcycle 'Norton' in an all-cash deal, for £16 million, by acquiring certain assets of Norton Motorcycles (UK) (in administration), through one of TVS Motor's overseas arms. 
  • This would be among the most interesting acquisitions of a storied motorcycle maker, and reflects TVS' and India's rapidly rising prominence in the global two-wheeler market.
  • Founded by James Lansdowne Norton in Birmingham (in 1898), Norton Motorcycles is among the most popular British motorcycle brands of all time.

Government Nod Must For Investment From China And Its Neighbours

  • India has clamped down on investments from China making prior government clearance mandatory for all forms investments, even indirect ones, from all countries sharing land border with the country.
  • The department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade  issued a press note 3 (2020 series) stating that foreign investments from countries with which India shares land border shall be under approval route.
  • Also, transfer of ownership of any existing or future FDI in an entity in India, directly or indirectly, resulting in beneficial ownership falling within this restriction will require government approval. The move comes close on the heels of market regulator Sebi asking custodian banks to disclose details of `ultimate beneficial owners' of foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) based in China and Hong Kong.

IT services giant cognizant hit by 'maze' Ransomware

  • Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp., one of the
  • world's largest providers of IT services, said it became a victim of a ransomware attack that has caused disruptions to its clients.
  • The company, which has almost 300,000 employees, said it was hit by the "Maze" ransomware group and is engaging law enforcement authorities.
  • The anonymous hackers behind Maze have made headlines in recent months for publicly holding its victims hostage by threatening to leak company information if the target doesn't pay its ransom.

Procurement Operations Of Pulses And Oilseeds Directly From Farmers

  • The union government of India made Central Nodal Agencies like NAFED and FCI striving to assure better returns for the farmers. The Minimum Support Price (MSP) from the farmers in several States in the Rabi 2020-21 season has started. Procurement of Pulses & Oilseeds at MSP from farmers under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) scheme in Rabi 2020-21 season currently in progress in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rajasthan. 
  • The quantity of 1,33,987.65 MT of Pulses & 29,264.17 MT of Oilseeds was procured by NAFED/FCI valued at Rs 784.77 Crores through which 1,14,338 farmers have been benefited. Price Stabilisation Fund (PSF) scheme and Toor procurement under PSS/PSF Kharif 2019- 20 season is underway in the States of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka & Telangana.

Power Ministry floats draft Electricity Act Bill 2020

  • The supply of quality power at affordable prices is essential for sustained growth of the economy of the country. Ministry of Power issued a draft proposal for amendment of Electricity Act, 2003 in the form of the draft Electricity Act (Amendment) Bill, 2020 for comments/suggestions from Stakeholders on 17th April 2020. 
  • The tariff be determined by Commissions without taking into account the subsidy.
  • High Court is proposed to be set-up with powers of the Civil Court to enforce performance of contracts related to purchase or sale or transmission of power.
