U.K. Certifies U.S. Extradition Request

  •  Britain's Home Secretary Sajid Javid said that he had certified the U.S. request to extradite WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on espionage grounds in a procedural move that opens the way for a court battle.
  • The U.S. Justice Department confirmed that it had submitted a formal extradition request.
  • The final decision on whether Mr. Assange can be extradited will rest with the courts.
  • Mr. Assange is now serving a 50-week sentence in jail for skipping bail when he entered the Ecuadorean Embassy in 2012.

Turkey Rejects U.S. Ultimatum

  •  Turkey's Defence Minister described as inappropriate an ultimatum from the U.S. urging Ankara to abandon its purchase of a Russian missile defence system.
  • Acting U.S. Defence Secretary Patrick Shanahan sent a letter telling Turkey that it had to renounce the S-400 system by July 31, or Turkish pilots training on the F-35 fighter jet programme would be expelled from the U.S.
  • According to Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu,  no one can give Turkey an ultimatum.
  • Mr. Çavuşoğlu repeated an offer to set up a joint working group to resolve U.S. concerns, and said that President Donald Trump looked favourably on the idea but that it was rejected by "some institutions" in the U.S.

U.S. Open to Talks on GSP with India

  • U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo hinted that it was possible to reinstate the Generalised System of Preferences, a scheme for preferential access to certain goods markets in the U.S., for India.
  • The administration official is expected to discuss this and other issues during his New Delhi visit later in June 2019.

The Golden Cat Wears New Colours

  •  Scientists have discovered that golden is no longer the only colour the elusive Asiatic golden cat can be associated with. Its coat comes in five other shades in Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The Asiatic golden cat (Catopuma temminckii) is listed as near threatened on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of threatened species.
  • It is found across eastern Nepal through north-eastern India to Indonesia.
  • Indian scientists from the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), an international conservation charity, and University College London (UCL) have discovered six colour morphs of the golden cat in Dibang Valley of Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The findings have contributed to an evolutionary puzzle because no other place on earth has so many colours of wild cats of the same species.

BUSINESS AND ECONOMY

 Grofers to Expand its Warehousing Capacity

  •  Online grocery start-up Grofers drew up a Rs. 280-crore plan to expand its warehousing capacity within the next 18 months (till December 2020)  to meet its growth needs.
  • Currently, the company has a storage capacity of 2.1 million sq.ft. This would be increased to 2.5 million sq.ft. by December 2019 and to 3.5 million sq.ft. by December 2020.
  • Grofers has 25 warehouses in 10 cities. It plans to add seven more warehouses by December 2019.
  • The expansion would cost about Rs. 80 crore for the first phase and Rs. 200 crore for the second phase.
  • The new warehouses would come up in Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

BPCL Ropes in STFC

  •  State-owned Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) roped in Shriram Transport Finance Company (STFC) to fund truckers for diesel purchase under its "Fuel now, pay later" scheme.
  • According to P. S. Ravi, ED, retail, BPCL, small transporters, due to their lesser financial capabilities, were in look out for high quality fuelling, associated services and financial solutions to build their business and growth.
  • In arrangement with Shriram Transport, they will get money and there is no need to carry cash.
  • This partnership addresses the need for fuelling. BPCL has the highest market share in the top 20 national highways.
  • This scheme is aimed at targeting small truck owners with less than 10 trucks, constituting about 75% of the diesel sales.

Promoters of DHFL in Talks with PE Firm

  • Promoters of DHFL are in talks with private equity firms and are expecting to garner $1 billion (about Rs. 6,900 crore) by selling nearly 50% of their holdings.
  • The Wadhawan family, who are the promoters, currently holds close to 40% stake in the firm.
  • The sale proceeds will enable DHFL to substantially reduce its debt-to-equity ratio and restart the business to its full potential.

India Planning to Launch Own Space Station

  •  Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman K. Sivan said that India would set up a space station, similar to the International Space Station, but smaller in size, in 5 to 7 seven years to conduct microgravity experiments in space, .
  • The space station, weighing 20 tonnes in weight, will be constructed once the 'Gaganyaan' human space missionis successfully completed.
  • According to Anurag Kumar Sinha, who heads the Directorate of Human Space Programme, the Indian space station would be stationed at an altitude of 400 kilometres from earth.
  • The project is still at a design stage and would entirely depend on the success of the 'Gaganyaan', which intends to put 2 or 3 Indian astronauts in space for a maximum of a week by the end of 2021.

Indian Recurve Team Reaches Final

  •  The Indian's men's recurve team reached the final of the World Archery Championships for the first time since 2005 after it shocked a formidable the Netherlands.
  • The team will seek its maiden title as it faces China in the summit clash. China ousted top seed Korea in the other semifinal.
  • The Indian team consisting of Tarundeep Rai, Atanu Das and Pravin Jadhav has already secured a quota for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic.

Malaysia's Badminton King Retires

  •  Cancer-hit badminton star Lee Chong Wei announced his retirement, ending a brilliant career in which he collected a swathe of honours but never won a world or Olympic title.
  • Lee, who spent a total of 348 weeks as world number one but lost six world and Olympic finals.
  • He has won three-time Olympic silver medals.

National Convener of BJP

  •  Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan was named the National Convener of Bharatiya Janata Party's membership drive.
  • The decision was taken at BJP president Amit Shah's meeting with party national office bearers and state heads.
  • Chouhan, who has served three successive terms as Madhya Pradesh CM, was expected to be given a more national role in the party after BJP's rather narrow loss to Congress in the state election held in December 2018.
  • As National Convener of the newly-launched membership drive, Chouhan is expected to spearhead BJP's push towards reaching out to even more people - especially in states which are scheduled to hold Assembly elections in the months to come.

LJP Faces Split

  •  A group of disgruntled leaders of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), which was founded by Ram Vilas Paswan in 2000, announced their decision to form a new outfit by the name of LJP (Secular) while accusing the union minister of running his party as a private limited company.
  • The breakaway group was led by LJP's national general secretary Satyanand Sharma and treasurer Ramesh Chandra Kapoor.
  • The disgruntled leaders, numbering over a dozen, also levelled serious allegations of corruption against the party's leadership and demanded a CBI probe into the same.

Assam Looks to Form 300 more Tribunals

  •  The Assam government has set in motion the process of increasing the number of foreigners' tribunals (FTs) to 400 from the current 100 in the next six months (till December 2019) as the deadline for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC), aimed at weeding out illegal immigrants, comes to a close.
  • The additional FTs, which are quasi-judicial bodies, will exclusively deal with NRC appeals and references.
  • The Supreme Court, which is monitoring the NRC update exercise, has set the July 31 deadline to complete the list of citizens in Assam.

No Survivors in Crashed An-32 Aircraft

  •  The Indian Air Force confirmed hours after the first recce team reached the crash site that thirteen military personnel on board the An-32 aircraft that crashed in Arunachal Pradesh on June 3 have died.
  • Air force and army helicopters had airdropped 15 mountaineers for rescue operations. Eight of them reached the crash site and transmitted the tragic news.
  • The following are the air warriors who died in the crash: Wing Commander GM Charles, Squadron Leader H Vinod, Flight Lieutenants R Thapa, Ashish Tanwar, S Mohanty and Mohit K Garg, Warrant Officer KK Mishra, Sergeant Anoop Kumar, Corporal Sherin, Leading Air Craftsman SK Singh and Pankaj and two non combatant enrolled employees Putali and Rajesh Kumar.

 Devaagyh Dixit Credited with Seven World Records

  •  The 6-year old Devaagyh Dixit from Lucknow is credited with making not one but seven world records, all in a day.
  • According to Rashi Dixit, mother of Devaagyh, Devaagyh Dixit is Asia's only boy to have made seven world records in playing drums.
  • In March 2019, he made the records in categories like most drum beats in a minute, most drum kicks in a minute, maximum paradiddles in a minute, maximum drum rolls in a minute, most drum beats in a second, most drum kicks in a second and fastest 10, 000 beats performer.
  • While all of his records now find place in 'The Golden Book of World Records', in music circles, Devaagyh is known as India's youngest drummer.

Renowned Indian-origin Writer Passes Away

  •  Ahmed Essop, renowned author and educationist of Indian-origin died in South Africa. He was 88.
  • He was a beloved teacher of English who clashed with the apartheid authorities and was barred from teaching.
  • Born in India in 1931, Essop migrated to South Africa as a child.
  • One of Essop's early books, 'The Hajji and Other Stories' won the coveted Olive Schreiner Prize from the English Academy of Southern Africa in 1979. It was later turned into a film.
  • In 2018, Essop received the Lifetime Achievement Literary Award at the annual South Africa Literary Awards.

 Johnson Wins First-round Vote

  •  Brexit hardliner Boris Johnson topped the ballot by a landslide in a first-round vote for a leader to replace British Prime Minister Theresa May.
  • In the ballot of Conservative MPs, Mr. Johnson secured more than twice the number of votes won by his nearest challengers as 3 of the 10 candidates were eliminated from the race.
  • Mr. Johnson secured 114 votes, way ahead of Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt on 43 and Environment Secretary Michael Gove with 37.
  • Former Brexit secretary Dominic Raab (27), Interior Minister Sajid Javid (23), Health Secretary Matt Hancock (20) and International Development Secretary Rory Stewart (19) also survived the cut.
  • The seven candidates go through to the second round, when contenders will need the votes of 33 of the 313 Conservative MPs to stay in the contest.

World Blood Donor Day

  •  Every year on 14th June, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day. The event, established in 2004, serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products, and to thank blood donors for their voluntary, life-saving gifts of blood.
  • World Blood Donor Day is one of eight official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organisation (WHO), along with World Health Day, World Tuberculosis Day, World Immunisation Week, World Malaria Day, World No Tobacco Day, World Hepatitis Day, and World AIDS Day.

Punjab to Roll out health Cover Scheme

  •  According to State Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu, the Punjab government would launch its flagship universal health insurance scheme 'Sarbat Sehat Bima Yojana' from July 2019.
  • The scheme will provide an annual health cover of Rs. 5 lakh per family and around 43.18 lakh families will be covered under it.
  • Besides all government hospitals, 364 private hospitals in Punjab have been empanelled for treatment.

Kamal Nath Implements Central Schemes

  •  Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath expedited the Central schemes held back because of the Lok Sabha elections after meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • After his return to Bhopal, the CM announced that the state government will provide data to the Centre for implementation of the NDA government's Prime Minister Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojna.
  • At the same time, a cabinet sub-committee gave its nod to implementation of 10% reservation in government jobs and admissions in educational institutions for economically weaker sections (EWS) people in the upper castes in line with the NDA government's decision.

Centre Reduces Contribution Rate for ESI

  •  From July 1, both employers and employees' contribution under the Employees' State Insurance (ESI) Act, which gives insured workers medical benefits among other facilities, would be reduced.
  • The total contribution towards ESI was reduced from 6.5% of an employee's wage to 4%, with the employer's share cut to 3.25%, from 4.75%, and the employee's contribution lowered to 0.75% of wage, from 1.75%.
  • This would benefit 3.6 crore employees and 12.85 lakh employers. 
  • The financial liability on employers would also be reduced, leading to improved viability of the establishments, increased ease of doing business and likely improved compliance with the Act. 
  • The current rates had been in place since January 1, 1997.
